RATION FORMULATION METHOD

Before formulating cat ration, there are may factors to be considered in order to achieve
maximum quality of ration. Cats at different age or condition will require different quantity of
nutrients. Factors to be considered are:
- Age
- Sex
- Body size
- Health condition
- Reproduction state
- Nutrient & antinutrient content
- Ingredients price & availability

In formulating ration, there are many different mothods that can be applied. They are :

a. Square Method / Pearson Square.

This method used for the simple ration, where two different ingrediens are to be mixed.
This method also used to calculate certain nutrient requirement such as crude protein, etc.
b. Trial and Error Method
Trial and eror method applied by comparing nutrient contents of feed ingeredients,
precentage of feed ingredients used, and mix-matching it until all nutrient requirement
balanced.
c. Simultaneous Equation Method
This methods use mathematical equation.
d. 2 x 2 Matrix Method
Similar with equation methods, this method use matrix to balance nutrient requirement
e. Computer Method
This method use certain computer program / software to formulate ration.

In this paper, trial and error method is used to formulate cats ration. This methods tries
differents diets and manipulate it until the nutrient requirements of the animals are met. By using
this method, its possible to meet all nutrient requirement of the animals. Step by step of trial and
error method:
1. Prepare a table containing feed ingredients list and its nutrient content. Later, this table
will be used to compare feed nutrients that will be used as ration.
2. Write down the precentation of nutrient desired, for example 30% protein for kitten, 9%
crude fat for maintenance adult cat, etc. The nutrition requirement outline are stated in the
table below.
Nutrient Growth & Reproduction Adult Maintenance
Minimum Minimum
Carude Fiber
Crude Protein 30.0 % 26.0 %
Crude Fat 9.0 % 9.0 %
Calcium 1.0 % 0.6 %
Phosphorus 0.8 % 0.5 %
Potassium 0.6 % 0.6 %
Sodium 0.2 % 0.2 %
Vitamin A 6668 IU/kg 3332 IU/kg
Vitamin D 280 IU/kg 280 IU/kg
Vitamin E 40 IU/kg 40 IU/kg
Vitamin K 0.1 mg/kg 0.1 mg/kg

3. The main composition for the ration, for example chicken meat, will be added last. Its
easier to add ingredients that have exact ammount, for example premix, before adding
other ingredients.
4. Add the feed ingredients one by one until it counted as 100%. For example, in making of
1 kg ration, add 10 g premix first (1%) that add the other ingredients until it weigh 1 kg.
In adding the ration ingredients, make sure to always consider its nutrient content (refer
to the table in no. 1)
5. Recalculate the sum of every nutrient required (protein, fat, calories, etc) If every nutrient
requirement is already fulfilled, then the ration is ready to be given to cats. If some
nutrients requirement are not fullfilled, then the ingredients used should be recheck and
replaced to meet required nutrients.
