CHAPTER I

OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Android formerly came into existence with the sure blaze idea that

developments are given the power and freedom to create enthralling mobile

applications while taking advantage of everything that the mobile handset has to

offer. The credit of developing android apps goes to the internet giant, Google.

Ever since the development of this application took place, the acceptance of

android apps as learning tools among the modern generation is consistently high

all over the globe. Developers across the world are increasingly encouraging

teachers and students to start using such mobile learning apps, to complement

their classroom lessons and achieve the benefits of using mobile applications.

Not surprisingly, the availability of such applications has gone up tremendously

over the years.

There are lots of benefits users could have in using android learning

application as part of their learning process. Using such application could offer

them round the clock availability which means that they can easily access a

particular learning app in their tablet or mobile devices, anytime and anywhere.

This can also offer a vast range of interesting, interactive activity scopes for the

young learners, which will help teachers and parents to keep their childrens

focus on their study while not getting any dull moments. Another benefit is that it
can be an effective utilization of leisure hours for children. These are just some

example of benefits that android applications could offer.

Through this wide range of advantages mobile or android applications

could offer to the users, the researchers acquire the idea of their proposed

system, the Learning Regions of the Philippines for Grade 4-6 pupils of Subic

Elementary School using Android Application. They are encouraged to develop

an application that will feature different regions in the Philippines and its basic

information to help teachers of Subic Elementary School to teach their students

while engaging them in using technology as a great part of modern age. This will

be the foundation of accomplishing this study and developing the proposed

system.

Background of the Study

As a Filipino citizen, it is important that we do have enough knowledge in

our own country. But as been observed, some of the youth these days is not

familiar with different regions in Philippines. It is taught in school but the problem

is the large number of students that the teachers cant handle them one-by-one.

This is where the researchers acquire the idea of using android application as

part of learning regions of the Philippines to be implemented in one of primary

school in Agoncillo, Batangas.

The researchers chose Subic Elementary School as their target school to

implement the use of Android Application in learning the regions of the


Philippines. This is to help them to cope up with the needs of the students and

teachers in learning tools to help them exercise their learning process. Subic

Elementary School is one of the primary school located in Agoncillo, Batangas. It

was established on 1928 with the help of residents of Barangay Subic by sharing

their land properties to make the development of the said school possible. Since

the said school was built, they are teaching lessons such as Regions of the

Philippines in usual way which they use books and other reading materials. But

on the modern generation, this method seems unexciting or boring for the

modern youth. The researchers thought of new way on how these students

would engage again in learning such lessons without the struggle of getting

bored or uninterested.

The researchers chosen topic Learning Regions of the Philippines for

Grade 4-6 pupils of Subic Elementary School using Android Application will be a

great help for both of the teachers and students in Subic Elementary School to

learn different regions in the Philippines. This application will be their instrument

to attain new knowledge about the said topic. The application will feature all the

regions in the Philippines with its basic information and this has also a quiz game

for the students to serve as their test of knowledge to measure how much did

they learn about the topic. The researchers believe that with the development of

this proposed system, this can be effective in assisting their beneficiaries in

regards with learning the selected topic.


Statement of the Problem

The goal of this study is to develop an Android Application that can be an

instrument in learning Regions of the Philippines with the use of tablet or mobile

devices. Specially, it answers the following:

1. What are the problems encountered by the students in learning the

different Regions of the Philippines?


2. What are the benefits of this application could give to the users?
3. How can the system be assessed in terms of :
3.1 Effectiveness;
3.2 Functionality; and
3.3 User-friendliness?

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The main goal of this study is to design and develop an android

application that will serve as an instrument in learning Regions of the Philippines.

This android application will feature all the regions in Philippines and will provide

significant information for every specific region. It also has a voice translation of

the information provided as part of its user-friendliness. The application will

provide a quiz game to the user to test their knowledge regarding the topic

tackled on the application.

In terms of limitation, this will only provide basic but significant information

about the topic provided. There is no other topics will be discuss and feature in

this application. The voice translation will be based on whats in the content

provided in every particular region. This doesnt support inputting of answers in


the quiz game, thats why the user must only choose from the choices provided.

The quiz game is also a single player game and it doesnt support multiple

players or any connection with other devices.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to be an instrument for learning Regions of the Philippines

as part of the lesson of grade 4-6 students in Subic Elementary School. The

application will provide significant information regarding the topic. This will be

important to the following beneficiaries:

To the Teachers

The developed application will help them to teach students regarding the

chosen topic. This will not just help them to engage into a unique educational

method but also to complement the other areas of studies. This can also help

them to make students be attentive to the lesson that they will tackle.

To the Students

The Application will be their instrument to learn more about the Regions of

the Philippines. This will help them to be more interested in learning the said

topic while enjoying the use of their tablets or mobile devices. They can also

study anytime and anywhere they want since it is very accessible.

To the Future Researchers


The study can be used by future researchers as reference for their study.

This can also help them to have knowledge to improve and develop their own

research studies.

Conceptual Framework

The researchers aim is to develop an Android Application that will provide

significant information about Regions of the Philippines which they believe could

help their beneficiaries to attain more knowledge about the topic. The

researchers use Conceptual framework as part of the development of their study.

The input represents the Information gathered about the Regions of the

Philippines as well as its audio translation and quiz game for the users. The

process represents the preparation of the needed devices and software to make

the development possible. And the output presents the developed application

with its significant features.


Definition of Terms

Android Application. Refers to a software application running on the Android

Devices. A thing made or adapted for a particular purpose, especially a piece of

Philippines. The Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia in the Southwestern

Quiz. A test of knowledge, especially a brief, informal test given to students.

Translator. Refers to a computer program or application that renders one

Operational Definition

Effectiveness. Refers to the capability of producing desired result.


Functionality. Refers to the actions, capabilities and usefulness of something

such as a software application.

User-Friendliness. Refers to the property of a system that is easy to use and

understand.
