Simple, Easy & Easier way to Increase your Happiness@Work

Imagine you are holding a glass of water. The absolute weight of the glass doesnt matter. It all
depends on how long I hold it. If you hold it for a minute or two, its fairly light. If you hold it for an
hour straight, its weight might make your arm ache a little. If you hold it for a day straight, your arm
will cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing you to drop the glass to the floor. In
each case, the weight of the glass doesnt change, but the longer you hold it, the heavier it feels to
you.

Similarly your stresses and worries in life are very much like this glass of water. Think about them
for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little. Think
about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed incapable of doing
anything else until you drop them.

In our daily busy lives, we tend to attract enough negative people, negative events and irritating
moments, which we want to forget, but we don't. Sometimes, we just push our emotions under the
carpet and act as if normal. We have learnt to bury our emotions within us in the name of survival.

Success & Happiness begins when you learn how to let go of your stresses and worries.

The number 1 quality for success in life is "Relaxation". Your intensity of happiness is directly
proportional to your degree of relaxation. No matter what happens during the day, you can put all
your emotional burdens down by practicing simple techniques like deep breathing or psychic sleep.
Many participants who learn & practice daily do not carry the worries & stresses through the night
and into the next day with them. If you feel the weight of yesterdays stress, its a strong sign that
its time to put the glass down.

Allow me to share with you three techniques (simple, easy & easier) which you can apply
in your work-spot. These techniques will increase your happiness and thereby your
productivity & relationships with your peers, supervisor & colleagues. You can even apply
the same in your personal life too.

Simple Technique 1:-

Before you leave office, take a sheet of paper (or even on your comp), list down 5-10 good
things that happened on that day. Talking nice to your colleagues, had a healthy or
sumptuous lunch, got a new sale, solved an issue, meeting a deadline, successful client
servicing, able to inspire one colleague, appreciated somebody & felt happy etc.

You can maintain this as a happiness log or happyness@work journal also. Since many of us
have the tendency to remember the negative experience, it's better to remember the
positive one by writing in this journal.

www.HappynessCoach.co.in Copyright 2015

Writing at-least 1 positive experience per day means, 22 in a month & 250 plus positive
experiences in one full year. This list will pep you up, motivate you and above all help you
during your half-yearly or annual appraisals.

Remember, the last 5 minutes of every single work day will determine your happiness at
work.

If this exercise sounds boring, then let me share with you an easy way & an easier way.

Easy Technique 2:-

Can you invest just 8 seconds of this easy way.

Thats all I am going to ask you now.

Bring your entire attention to the tip of your nose & take just one full deep breath
mindfully. Feel the chillness of the air as your breathe in for 4 seconds & feel the hot air
coming out as you breathe out for 4 seconds. You can mentally count 1-4 for inhale and 5-
8 for exhale.

Can you do this without getting distracted?

One mindful breath & you are done with todays meditation.
Nevertheless, One mindful breath a day, keeps your unhappiness away!

Easier Technique 3: -
Everyday, when you enter your work-spot, at random look at any two people and mentally
tell I want this person to be happy. Start doing this exercise, you will suddenly find that
you are filled with lots of happiness & good things happen in your life.
If you like any one of the above 3, then, pick that one & start the practice for the next 21
days till it becomes a habit for you.

Practice promotes habits and habits deliver results.

Happyness@work = Super charged, Exciting, Rewarding, Energizing, Fun.

Being Mindful can relieve you from STRESS
Mind is like a monkey, keeps jumping between past and future or the fantasy channel.

Alan Cohen says Imagine two lawyers in a courtroom inside your head.

One is arguing for your possibilities and you achieving your goals. The other is arguing for
your limits and why you dont deserve what you want. Who will win? The lawyer whom you
pay the most. The way you pay these lawyers, however, is not with money; it is with your
attention.

Where your attention goes, your mind & energy flows there.

Your mind plays a major role in holding your current attention.

But your mind is always on an excursion mode.

Mind keeps travelling between your past and future or to the fantasy world. Hence, your
attention keeps wandering.

Lets test it now...Ask yourself what were you thinking few minutes before - I am for sure
your mind was thinking about any one issue/situation in any one of the three realms (past,
future or fantasy).

Its like riding your bicycle. By continuous microscopic adjustment of the cycle bar to the
left or right, we travel straight in a cycle. Your mind will keep jumping, but it is your
responsibility to tie to the present moment awareness.

You want more success & money in your life.

You want more happiness & better health in your life.

Success, Happiness, Health & Money are possible only in the present moment and do not
exist in the past or the future.

So, the starting point for any success journey begins by taming your powerful mind to stay
in the present moment.

Training your mind to be in the present moment is the key for perennial source of
happiness & health.

The first and foremost skill to learn before any other skill is being mindful. When you learn
to become mindful, you can take action faster than anybody else.

The only difference between a successful and un-successful person is the former takes
ACTION.

Mindfulness is the first step towards taking Action in life.

Ive found a more mindful life to be one of the best changes possible. Just a few of the
benefits of mindfulness that Ive discovered:

Youre more present, which means youre not missing great moments by thinking about
other things
You are more connected with people youre with
You are more aware of urges, which means you can better change your habits
You notice your resistance, and negative self-talk, which means youre not powerless to
them
Life becomes better when you savour it.

There are a bunch of health benefits, too, but beyond all the benefits, a mindful life is
just a joy to live. Its not necessarily a means to an end its an end itself.

How to Be Mindful?

1. Do one thing at a time. Do Single-task and a big NO to multi-task. Remember the Zen
proverb: When walking, walk. When eating, eat.

2. Do it slowly and deliberately.

3. Do less. If you do less, you can do those things more slowly, more completely and with
more concentration.

4. Spend at least 5 minutes each day doing nothing. Just sit in silence. Become aware of
your thoughts. Focus on your breathing. Notice the world around you. Become comfortable
with the silence and stillness. Itll do you a world of good and just takes 5 minutes!

6. Stop worrying about the future focus on the present. Just focus on what youre doing,
right now. Enjoy the present moment.

7. When youre talking to someone, be present. Focus on being present, enjoy your time
listening to that person.

8. Keep practicing. When you get frustrated, just take a deep breath. When you ask
yourself, What should I do now, Self? the answer is keep practicing.
