1. What is Leadership?

the action of leading a group of people or an organization

Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an
individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire
organizations. The literature debates various viewpoints: contrasting Eastern and Western
approaches to leadership, and also (within the West) US vs. European approaches. US
academic environments define leadership as "a process of social influence in which a person
can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a
common task". Leadership seen from a European and non-academic perspective
encompasses a view of a leader who can be moved not only by communitarian goals but
also by the search for personal power.

2. Qualities of a leader

There are a lot of qualities of a leader here are some of them:

Character: Be a piece of the rock Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men

& women to a common purpose and the character which inspires confidence.

Charisma: The First Impression Can Seal the Deal How can you have charisma?

Be more concerned about making others feel good about themselves than you are

making the feel good about you

Commitment: It separates Doers from Dreamers to the soldier, its going over the

hill, not knowing whats waiting on the other side.

Communication: Without It You Travel Alone Simplify your message its not what

you say, but also how you say it. Show the truth believe what you say, live what you

say. Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective

leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a

sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader cant get a message across

clearly to motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesnt even matter.

Competence: If you build it, they will come Competence goes beyond words. Its

the leaders ability to say it, plan it, and do it in such a way that others know that

you know- and know what they want to follow you

Courage: One Person with Courage is a Majority You gain strength, courage and

confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You

are able to say to yourself, I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that

comes along. You must do the thing you cannot do.

Discernment: Put an End to Unsolved Mysteries- Smart leaders believe only half of

what they hear. Discerning leaders know which have to believe.

Focus: The Sharper It Is; The Sharper You Are- Priorities and Concentration. A

leader who knows what his priorities are but lacks concentration knows what to do

but never gets it done. If he has concentration but no priorities, he has excellence

without progress. But when harnesses both, he has potential to achieve great things.

Generosity: Your Candle Loses Nothing When It Lights Another- No person was

ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.

Initiative: You Wont Leave Home Without It-Success seems to be connected with

action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they dont quit.
3. Leadership Styles

LEADERSHIP STYLE #1 ENCOURAGE SIGNIFICANCE One is too small a

number to achieve greatness. Become a better team leader by thinking about the

greatest dream you have for your life.

LEADERSHIP STYLE #2 SHARE THE BIG PICTURE - The goal is more important

than the role. A team isnt supposed to be a bunch of people being used as a tool by

one individual for his/her own selfish gain. Members of a team must have mutually

beneficial shared goals. They must be motivated to work together, not manipulated

by someone for individual glory.

LEADERSHIP STYLE #3 BENCH STACKING Every team has three groups of

players. First there are starters, who directly add value to the organization or who

directly influence its course. Second, there are bench players, who add value to the

organization indirectly or who support the starters who do. The third group is a core

group within the starters that I call the inner circle members. These are the people

that without whom, the team would fall apart. Your job is to make sure each group

is continually developed so that bench players are able to step up to become starters,

and starters are able to step up to become inner circle members.

LEADERSHIP STYLE #4: CLEAR COMMUNICATION & GOOD LISTENING As

the leader of the organization, you set the tone for communication. Your

communication must be consistent, clear, and courteous. Leaders must also be good

listeners. When leaders dont listen they stop gaining wisdom, team members stop

communicating, etc.
