ALEKS is an online system that uses ongoing assessments to create individualized educational learning plans
that can be accessed through the Internet. The core system is an efficient and effective adaptive assessment
tool that determines quickly and precisely what an individual student knows. Based on the assessment data,
the system creates a learning plan which includes explanations, videos, animations and algorithmically
generated problems. Report driven lessons will be taught both individually and to the whole class.

Classroom Use of Electronic Devices: As a courtesy to others, please be sure to have all electronic devices
either powered down or in silent mode prior to entering the classroom. Students texting in the classroom will
be asked to leave. During exams all electronic devices must be stowed before the test is administered.

Prerequisite: MAT0057, MAT0022C, or MAT0028C with a grade of C or better or an acceptable placement test
score.

Class Description: Catalog Description: Topics include sets, the real number system and number properties,
absolute value, products and factoring, algebraic fractions, linear and quadratic equations and inequalities,
systems of equations, radicals, rational exponents, graphs, and relations and functions. 4 Credit Hours

NOTE: Check the college catalog to be sure that prerequisites have been met. This is your responsibility.
The mathematics department will not support a refund petition for any student who does not satisfy the
prerequisites and does not withdraw before the end of the add/drop period.
Attendance:
Students are expected to be in class and on time for all regularly scheduled class periods.
Arriving late to class or leaving early from class will count as half an absence.
It is the students responsibility to obtain any missed assignments.
Students in excess of four (4) absences may either be withdrawn by the instructor or receive a penalty
to their final grade if it is after the withdrawal deadline.
The deadline to drop the course is 21 March 2017.

Note: In order to successfully complete this course, you must earn a course grade of a C or better. If you do
not earn a grade of at least a C, you will not be able to advance to the next mathematics course. Additionally,
credit for this course may NOT transfer to another institution with a grade lower than a C.

ASSIGNMENTS: The ALEKS pie contains all assignments. They are divided into 9 units. The assignments
(including practice quizzes) are due thoughout the term. Refer to the last page of the syllabus for due dates.
To access the ALEKS pie, login to www.ALEKS.com. Your primary task is to master topics (i.e. complete the
objectives)! Most of your time in ALEKS will be spent in learning mode, working practice problems which is
where learning occurs. ALEKS can provide a nearly unlimited variety of practice problems, but in most cases
you will do only a few problems per topic in order to establish your grasp of the concept. Every time you do a
problem, ALEKS will give you immediate feedback on your answer and tell you how many more problems you
need to do for that topic. Note that if you make mistakes, ALEKS requires a little extra practice, but it doesn't
start you over; you always get credit for the problems that you have answered correctly. Though you may work
according to your own schedule, it is important that you maintain sufficient progress by completing the
objectives, quizzes and tests as scheduled. At the least, you should complete all Current Objective topics
as preparation for the quizzes and tests. Ongoing (ungraded) Knowledge Checks will occur every 8-10 hours
or after 20-22 topics have been mastered.

NOTE: If you do not have an ALEKS license key, use the financial aid access code printed on the first page of
the course syllabus. This code gives you temporary access to ALEKS for a two-week period. Once the code
expires, you will be locked out of your ALEKS account until you purchase the student access code. It is highly
recommended that you purchase the access Code BEFORE the two weeks expire to prevent
interruptions with your account.

Quizzes: (Goal: 80+ %) These are Practice tests and may be taken an unlimited number of times from any
location; only the best score will be recorded. There may also be short quizzes given in class to reinforce
learning of the days lessons.

Test Taking Policy

Tests (excluding the final exam) will be taken via ALEKS. Make-up tests are given only in cases of
documented emergencies or extreme circumstances. Arrangements to make up a test must be made with the
instructor immediately and should be taken within one week of the original test date. Zeros will be used in
place of missed tests. The final exam is a comprehensive 25 item paper/pencil test which will cover most of
the course objectives.

The math department does not allow cell phones, PDAs, mp3 players, iPods, laptop computers, or other
electronic devices to be turned on during any test (this includes the CDE). Computers with a computer algebra
system (CAS), like a TI-89, TI-92, Voyage 200, or N-Spire, are not allowed for use during a test. You may not
use your smart phone as a calculator. The test password will not be entered until your electronic devices are
stowed and out of sight.

Limitations of Withdrawals
A student is limited to two (2) withdrawals per course. Upon the third attempt in a course, a student will not be
permitted to withdraw and will receive a grade for that course from the instructor. A student will be limited to
three (3) attempts per course, including the original grade, repeat grades and withdrawals at any point in the
semester. A student enrolled in the same undergraduate college credit course more than two times shall pay
the full cost of instruction.

Academic Honesty
Any talking or referring to books or notes during exams will be considered cheating. Please refer to the
Student Handbook and Student Catalog for consequences and remedies. Disciplinary proceedings may be
initiated against students who infringe upon a teachers right to teach.

Student Responsibility Policy:

When a student attends the College, s/he becomes subject to its jurisdiction.
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner, in all areas of campus life.
By enrolling, they pledge to obey the rules and regulations of the College and are responsible for
