Course Description: This course is an introduction to principles of public speaking with application of speaking
skills. This course is designed to give the student confidence and poise in various speaking situations through
knowledge of the processes involved in public speaking and interpersonal communication by providing him or
her with opportunities to present informal speeches, group discussion and conversations.
Required Textbook: OHair, Stewart, and Rubenstein, A Speakers Guidebook (5th Edition). Bedford/St.
Martins, 2012.
Grade Assessment:
Speeches:
Midterm Grade Calculation: Your midterm grade, which will be posted in MyCCTC but will not be
listed on your transcript, will be based on your class average of all assignments completed, as defined by
the assignment percentages listed in the syllabus, up to the midterm grade date in the semester.
Speech Grades
The grade for the final two speeches will be determined by the total of 4 parts:
Submitting Speeches
Although this is an online course, public speaking requires an audience by definition. In order to fulfill this
requirement, students must do the final two assigned speeches before an audience. Speeches may be
recorded on cell phones, cameras, or webcam. The speech file should be uploaded into the discussion tab
for that particular speech. This is not a video chat class. The speeches should be given while standing
and addressing the audience as one would in a face-to-face situation.
If you have any problems uploading speeches or any other technical issue you should contact Jenny Szupka,
Distance Education Coordinator, at 803-774-3343 or Kimberly Knox, Distance Education Instructional
Technologist, 803-774-3389.
Students may use notes when delivering speeches but the speech should not be read. The highest
grade possible on a speech which is obviously read is C.
If the speech is clearly just reading from a webpage or brochure the student will receive a grade of 0
for that speech.
Discussion Assignments
Written assignments and speech videos will be uploaded to the appropriate discussion topic. Students are
required to post their individual response to the assignment and to comment on at least 3 other student
responses. The original post should be at least 50 words). The comments must be at least 25 words in
length and clearly reflect the reading of the students response or viewing of the student speech (see grading
rubric in D2L). Student grades on the assignment will be 50% for original response and 50% for comments
on other student responses. The deadline for original submissions to the discussion assignment is shown in
the course calendar. The deadline for comments on other student submissions is two days later..
Attendance
In this class, attendance will be defined as the student actively completing each week's assignments. For
more detail see attendance policy in Syllabus Part A Students who do not submit an assignment for 14
consecutive days will be dropped with a WA for not meeting the attendance policy. Simply logging into
the class is not sufficient for meeting the attendance requirements of the class. Your last day of attendance
in the class will be the last day you logged into the course. If extenuating circumstances arise which
prevent you from completing assignments on time, let me know ASAP..
Quizzes must be completed online at the course D2L website and submitted the dates assigned for
credit. Each quiz may be taken up to 2 times and the highest grade will apply.
Importance of Checking MyCCTC Emails: All official college correspondence (i.e. financial aid
awards, academic warnings, etc.) will be sent to your CCTC email address so be sure to login into
MyCCTC and check your email regularly (at least once a week) throughout the semester. If not, you may
miss a very important message which could have a negative impact on your overall success and future at
CCTC. All emails between students and instructors pertaining to the course (i.e. assignments, due dates,
questions about grades and attendance, etc.) are required to be sent through CCTC email so be sure to check
your CCTC.
Access to Professor
CCTC emails are the quickest way to reach him and will be responded to within 1 business day. Submitted
materials will be graded within one week of reception.
