GENERAL RULES OF PROSODY

Rule 1 Notes
Two consonants make vowels long; The double letters X, Z, J, count as two consonants [where
Long each contraction and diphthong. J is the consonant form of I]; e.g. jax, xis, Amzon. If
the last of two consonants is r, the preceding short vowel
becomes common; e.g. scrum.
Rule 2
When vowels two together go, e.g. cgo = co-igo
The first is short, as in do. Except prae before vowel; e.g. praeuntem.
Except u after q, e.g. qud; also after g, e.g. langudus; also
Rule 3 after s, e.g. suvis; also e in dii, i in fo, alus, illus, etc.
Long monosyllables, as vr, Long sl and nl.
Except pr, tr, vr, cr, fc, fr,
Qus, nc, n, n, bs, qu, n (?), v,
Short those in L, and B, D, T.

RULES FOR FINAL SYLLABLES

Rule 4. Notes
Long final A and I O U, Except mih, tib, sib, ub, ib, nis, quas. Greek Vocative
As frutr, dic, virg, t; and Dative, e.g. Ir, Irid.
But all are short in final A, Except eg, du, mod, cit; rarely put, orig, nesci.
Like mens, magn, numin. Nominative and Vocative Feminine Singular of Nouns
and Adjectives, also Neuter Plurals, give short .
Rule 5. Also s in sum and compounds, and a few more.
Long except donc, final C,
Short final E and L, D, T. Except impr, dispr.
Except those forms like fr, r,
And Thisb, mn, msr.

Rule 6.
Long Latin words in As and ES,
But short greek words, and pens, segs,
With mils, coms, peds, tegs.

Rule 7.
Short final N and final R,
As agmn, datr, and calcr.

Rule 8. Notes
Short final is, as ducs, fels, Genitive Singular and Nominative and Accusative Plural
Long ss, vs, terrs, vels. Declension 4 make s long; also words like virts, sals.

Rule 9.
Short final US; long words in OS,
But long ms, grads; short Args.

Rule 10.
Short words which end in Y and YS,
As Chel, Othrs, Erinns
