Interview Tips:

Think like a Pro & Ask questions like a Boss.

Stage 1 : Empathize

Our next step in Empathizing is conducting interviews. How we develop our

questions and plan ahead of time will directly impact the quality of the
information we learn. DONT GO IN WITHOUT A PLAN!!

Here are some tips from the professionals:

1. Start with GENERAL questions about hobbies, passions, etc. to get things
started. This will help make both of you comfortable.

2. Always ask OPEN ENDED questions, not yes/no questions

Tell me what you think
Why do you think

3. Ask REFLECTION questions:

What were some of the unexpected challenges/benefits?
How has this experience impacted your life?

4. Ask questions that CONFIRM what you may ALREADY KNOW. They may not volunteer
the information you are looking for if you dont ask for it!

5. Ask about FEELINGS:

How do you feel about
What was it like to do
Why do you do what you do
What motivates you

6. Trick them into getting the sound bite you want:

If you want them to say This was the most important event in my life,
then ask was this the most important event in your life? Then if they
answer yes, you can write _______ said this was the most important event in
his/her life.

7. Always close with IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOUD LIKE TO ADD?

issue.
- It depends on the person. For some people it
might take a little longer to warm up. Some are
willing to talk about it right away. For other
people it might be focus on something else that
is easier to talk about, then work their way to
talk about the other challenging parts that are
hard to talk about.
What makes this such a big issue, that people often
overlook?
- In our society we get a lot of messages about
what were suppose to feel and what not to. With
depression we hear things like cheer up, get
over it, snap out of it, you have no reason to
feel this way, you have everything. We recieve
a lot of messages that it is not okay but the
reality is that sadness is always an okay thing
to feel, it is an important emotion that we have
and depression might mean that the sadness has
spiral out of control but society has to do a
lot with it. In general were not knowledge and
accepting of emotions including sadness and
depression.
Do you get more teenagers or adults?
- More adults than teenagers but recently
teenagers are speaking up and wanting to get
help with depression but when a teenager is
feeling pressure to come seek help by a parent
or someone it makes them harder for them. They
get more out of it if they want the help.

How can we tell if we/our someone we know is

depressed?
- Shutting down, not reaching out to friends,
emotional eating, too much time in bed, staying
inside the house too often.
How do you think we can help them?
- Its helpful to let them know that theyre not
alone. Also that there are some good treatments
for depression. It has to be their decision but
just letting them know that there is help and
when theyre ready you will be there to assist
them.
Do you feel like medicine actually helps them out?
- It can be helpful for some people, it needs to
be a particular type of medicine. Talk with a
medical doctor, there is certain medication that
are anti-anxiety that are only meant to be used
short term. You can get addictive and It can
cause other problems if you use it for a long
term. For some people they respond well to
antidepressants who find it very helpful others
dont. The combination of both is really good
because once you stopped taking medication the
benefits are gone. Building skills are really
helpful.
How many teenagers have said they are suicidal?
- Its very common they have express thoughts
about ending their lives and they're afraid to
disclose that because they feel like you might
call the police on them or might send them to
the hospital.

depression?
How did you get out of depression?
What did you do to help yourself get out of
depression?
Is there anything else you would like to add?
ANSWERS:
16 years old currently
They have struggled with depression on and off for
about 5 years
They first realized they were depressed when they
were about 11, they didnt know they were depressed
until someone pointed it out to them and they still
didnt want to believe it, it just felt like they
were tired all the time and didnt wanna go out and
didnt have any motivation for doing anything.
They didnt know how they became depressed, they have
been diagnosed with mood disorder and chronic
depression but still doesnt know how it starts.
Once they realized they were depressed they started
taking anti depressants which helped a little bit.
This first time they got depressed they kept it to
themselves but the second time they opened up to a
few trusted friends which helped them out a lot to
talk about it.
Their mom helped them but the people that they talked
to about it helped them the most because it helped
make them feel like theyre not going through it
alone.
Advice they have for someone going through depression
is to talk about it with some close friends because
it really helps a lot to take a lot of the weight off
of your shoulders and it feels like youre not alone
during it all.
The main thing that helped them get out of depression
is to do things that they know they enjoy doing. This
person really liked doing sports and they tried to be
as active as possible and get out and do as much as
possible even though they didnt want to go out in
the first place.
Something that they did to help themselves get out of
depression is to look online and find things that
help with depression. Things like setting goals like
talking to at least 10 people a day.
The one thing they would like to add is they want
people to know that they are not alone.

words that people at school use on them?
How many times have they told you that they dont
feel like they can talk to anyone?
What are the causes that makes an adult feel depress?
Is there anything youd like to add?

Do adults go there often? We see about 60% adults and

40% teens currently. This varies, but it's usually
within 5% of this.

If a teenager starts feeling better like what are the

main goals that are set? To increase the things that
make people feel better, ie having a life worth
living and setting the goals that will achieve that.

Do you have teenagers who have a hard time finding

positivity? Yes, positivity can be very difficult to
find for anyone, and it can be especially difficult
if there aren't enough life experiences to easily
connect to and draw from.

How does the connection with the person improve?

People can improve by feeling more connected to other
people, and improving relationships is a great way to
do this. We talk about specific ways to improve
relationships with others and especially the people
that are closest to them.

How many teenagers say they want to end their life?

About 1/2 of the teens we see have some of those
thoughts. Sometimes the thoughts are less specific,
ie "I don't want to be here anymore."

What has been the chances a teenagers get affected by

words that people at school use on them? Teens are
very affected by words. If the words are perceived as
mean, then they have a lot of power and teens can
react strongly to them. No one likes to be talked to
in a way that they perceive as mean.

How many times have they told you that they dont
feel like they can talk to anyone? It's pretty common
for teens to say that they don't feel like they can
talk to anyone. I don't have an exact number, but a
large percent feel that way.

What are the causes that makes an adult feel depress?

Adult depression and teen depression aren't far
apart. Adults become depressed when they feel alone,
misunderstood, if they have some type of conflict, if
someone dies and/or if they have a chemical
imbalance. There are many causes, and lots more I
haven't listed.
Is there anything youd like to add? Therapy can help
teens feel more in control of their life and give
them a safe place to talk. I highly recommend it if
someone feels depressed.
