PT TELKOM Results on Field Tests of Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - Lite Technology via ATM Networks Benny Henricus Samosir, ST Senior Engineer of R & D PT Telkom Indonesia J1Gegerkalong Hilie 47 Bandung ~ 40152 Tel $62-22-4571313 Fax : +62-22-2012234 e-mail benny@ristetkom.co.id Abstract Inthe increasingly competitive telecommunications market, telephone companies’ success will be determined by their ability to satisfy customers with first-to-market solutions that that improve efficiency, effectiveness and profits. A significant and available opportunity for telephone companies is @ high-speed data access service designed for the masses that network PCs together to form private networks. This service would typically include access to corporate LANs and the Internet. Using the existing network to provide these services is imperative to acquire rapid market share. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies; specifically, Asymmetric, Digital Subscriber’ Line (ADSL) products fulfill this need. ADSL offers sufficient bandwidth to provide high-speed access to the growing number of dial-up PC users. ADSL. also solves numerous network problems created by the longer-than-average holding times for data users. ADSL provides a migration path to the new network infrastructures, including Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks, Telephone companies must react quickly or risk losing existing market shares to the CATV ‘companies who plan to offer high-speed access 0-7803-7093-7/01/$10.00©2001 IEEE 227 services via cable modems implemented on existing HFC networks. ADSL allows telephone companies to enter the market quickly and to offer sophisticated, high-speed data services to their customer. PT Telekomunikasi_ Indonesia, tk (PT TELKOM) has completed field tests of digital subscriber lines (xDSL) to evaluate the speed and quality of services provided with asymmetric digital subscriber loop lite (ADSL-lite) technology. The tests ended on June, 2000, Following the tests, PT Telkom is now preparing to launch a pilot xDSL service by around the third quarter of fiscal 2000. 1, Outline of Tests Time January 10, 2000 to June 30, 2000 Area Jakarta Details ADSL-Lite devices were used with copper subscriber lines to evaluate xDSL that were used to provide Intemet services and Video on Demand Monitors : 7 IsP fad Figure 1 : Trial Configuration Note: iG 2. 3 4 es 6. 7. 8 9. Evaluation of microfilter (Low Pass Filter) Such a filter is inexpensive and can be easily installed by the customer. In effect, this accomplishes the same thing for G-lite as did the centralized splitter concept. Instead of having the filter at a single point, the filtering takes the form of a distributed splitter. This in- line microfilter climinates disruptive noise and raises the impedance at ADSL frequencies to prevent shunting out the ADSL signal. Telkom’s testing of Glite in a field tial demonstrated that without microfilters there was often a reduction in service rates due to interference from telephone handsets. With a proper installation of microfilter basically full rate can be realized. Conclusions ADSLilite enables high-speed multimedia serviees, intemet access, distance leaning and, video conferencing for everyone with a standard, copper phone line. The access Network architecture here described, in the line of existing specifications and experiments, harmonizes the interconnection between ADSL-lite and Native ATM Technologies. One relevant feature is the use of ATM as the technological solution for integrated services at both the service node and end user interfaces. The advantages of ATM are its traffic multiplexing capabilities, good support for multicast, end-to-end QoS ‘management, and versatility. For lines up 3.7 km, service with bit rate 1.3 “Mbps was possible to all monitors. References (Times 10 bold) ‘The reference below ate writen using Times 9 font.
