When deciding how to set your tactics there are many decisions to be made,
and also many things that are not quite clear to a lot of Online Soccer
Manager Gamers. This article will help you to get a clearer understanding of
what means what when setting your tactics.

Style of play: This indicates how aggressive you want your players to be
when defending. The more aggressive you set this, the more cards and injuries your
team may sustain. Aggression can also be used as an advantage when playing against
stronger teams by taking a risk and setting it to extreme. Looking at how strict the
referee will be in your next match may also help you decide on what level of aggression
to use. Most gamers decide to leave this on aggressive. This subject is pretty straight
forward!

Long Ball: This should be used in formations with a high amount of forwards; 3-2-5, 3-
3-4 and 4-2-4. This style skips out the midfield by playing long balls from the defence
to the forwards. Playing long ball is beneficial against opposition with a strong midfield
or if your midfielder are weak. Long ball is more of a defence tactic and is best use to
counter stronger and passing still teams.

Passing: This should be used with a high amount of midfielders as the passing
battle is won and lost in the midfield. Formations like 4-5-1, 3-5-2 and 4-4-2B
are good with a passing style. 4-4-2B is also suggested because the
midfielders in this formation play narrow and not wide like in 4-4-2A. This
stye is best used if you have a strong midfield or if you wanted to
counter oppositions passing tactics, but only if you have the better team.

Play Wide: This is best used with strong attackers and strong attacking
fullbacks in your squad. Your team focus's it's attacks through wing play. Play
wide is best used with a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 formation although other attacking
formations are adaptable. These tactics are mostly used by Goal 1-4 teams.

Counter Attack: This style of play is strongest with all the defensive
formations available. 6-3-1, 5-4-1, 5-3-2, 5-2-3, and 4-5-1 can all be used
successfully with the counter attack tactic. When playing with a lower goal
team against a Goal 1-4 team I would suggest trying a counter tactic.

Shoot On Sight: There has been a lot of debate as to whether shoot on sight is
a attacking or defensive formation. This is still very hard to determine because
of its high success rate. Especially with the 4-2-3-1 formation. Shoot on sight
is definitely more a defensive tactic than it is a offensive one. You are basically
telling your players to shoot at any chance they get because a lower amount
of opportunities is expected due to strong opposition. As for which
formations to use with shoot on sight? It would have to be formations with a
lot of midfielders; 4-5-1 and 3-5-2 formations.

Line Tactics: This will determine the mentality of your defence, midfield, and
forwards. You should to keep this in relation to your formation and how
attacking or defensive you intend on playing. You wouldn't play defensive and
have your defensive line set to support attack so they bomb forward and
leave the defence open, or play attacking and have your forwards set set fall
back. It just doesn't add up. Also, your line tactics could help determine how
well certain players perform. For example: having your defenders line tactics
set to upcoming backs and then putting a defender with high offensive ratings
left or right back would increase his chances of performing well.

Defensive Tactics: Man to Man or Zonal marking? Zonal marking is most

effective with defensive tactics, low pressure, and when your amount of
defenders outnumber attackers. For Man to Man marking it is the other way
around; most effective with attacking tactics, high pressure and equal amount
of defenders to oppositions attackers.

Offside trap: Using the offside trap is recommended for formations with less
defenders. A smaller amount of defenders would make it easier for the
defenders to communicate, hold an even line, and play the offsider trap when
needed.

Advanced Tactics: Mentality is pretty straight forward. You can adjust your
mentality to five different levels; Contain, Defensive, Standard, Attacking, and
Overload.

Tempo: Adjust the tempo to each opponent accordingly. The better your
team is compared to your opponent, the higher u should adjust this slider

Pressure: This should adjusted to how defensive or attacking your tactics are.
If you plan on parking the bus you should not want to apply a lot of pressure.
