Thesis Statement:

Although Asian American immigrant cultural generation gap which come from

differences and conflict is the serious issue and impact the diversity society such as America,

plenty of solutions always exist and that result can be the evidence of the harmonious and

peaceful diversity society.

Detailed OUTLINE

I. Introduction

A. Generation gap can happen everywhere and most of people face with that problem

during their lifetime, but for Asian immigrant families, they have a more trouble to

narrow the gap which is cultural generation gap.

1) According to Leung, usually immigrants who settle in a new country bring their

own values, belief, and life style, but that kind of personal luggage gives them a

difficulty such as communication and conduct codes when they adjust the new

country (3).

2) The 1.5 generation of immigrant families who grow up in a new country and new

culture are not embrace their parents culture which is Asian (Leung 3).
Kim2

3) Those facts lead them to have a cultural generation gap which is the conflict

comes from cultural transition (Lui 404).

B. Thesis Statement

Even though Asian American immigrant cultural generation gap which come

from differences and conflict is the serious issue and impact the diversity society such as

America, plenty of solutions always exist and that result can be the evidence of the

harmonious and peaceful diversity society.

II. Issue of the international cultural generation gap for Asian American immigrant family

and impact the diversity society

A) Asian-American immigrant families have a completely different life routine, so they cant

communicate and understanding each others cultures because they take a different time

to adjust the new culture.

1) According to Ying and Han usually the parents slowly adjust the new culture because

they order of priority to establish and develop their life (62). because they have to

take care of their family, so the parents mostly keep their root culture more than their

children.

2) The children get a lot of influence about the new culture in the new country society

such as school and during that time they naturally and adjust the culture (Ying,

Han61). They dont need to take care of the reality house issue like the first

generation, so they need more time to enjoy and adjust the new culture.

B) 1.5 generation can get confusion, misunderstanding the two different cultures and get

stereotype in diversity society

Kim3

1) According to Kim and Ahn, ethnic identity is the most important thing to make the

sense of society belonging to 1.5generation because for young Asian American

immigrants who adopt the new country and dont have any knowledge of their root

culture, easily can get some confusion about ethnic identity (354).

2) When the second generation of immigrants discuss about their issue such as marriage,

education, and future job, parents cant understand 100%about their issue because of

their cultural difference and their belief (Leung 3). Then, that lead them to rupturing

of communication (Leung 1). Lack of communication make a lot of conflict and

cultural generation gap (Kim, Ahn 361).

3) Immigrants children who have lack of cognition about their country and cultural

identity usually face with misunderstanding when they communicate with other

people and that fact which they cant belong to be a both culture bring them to

negative stereotype and issue about diversity society and conflict (Ying, Han 62).

C) Effective Solution for the problem

1) Communication and learn social skills such as open mind will help to the immigrant

family in diversity society to solve the cultural generation gap even though our

second generation avoid the communication with elder (Dan 146).

2) Learning and cooperation own root history and culture from family is the good way to

narrow the cultural generation gap because lack of root culture knowledge is the

reason of the gap (Million, Vare 4).

3) The first generation of immigrants must help the children to get a strong ethnic

identity (Yoo, Lee 64). Without the strong ethnic identity is the most the reason for

Asian American immigrant childrens obstacle to adjust the diversity society.

III. Conclusion

The cultural generation gap is the biggest issue for Asian American immigrant

families and it also impact to the diversity society. Basically that issue come from

their different cultural belief, lack of their cultural knowledge, and ethnic identity.

That fact makes a lot of conflict and disadvantage such as misunderstanding,

confusion, and stereotype to the Asian American immigrant families. However, that

issue can be narrowed and solved with communication, education, and familys

cooperation.

Introduction

Most of young people easily adjust the change and new things such as culture,

technology, and entertainment. However, for elder, usually they dont like the change because

they need more time to adjust the new things rather than youth. This kind of difference makes the

generation gap and most of people face with generation gap during their lifetime. Also, that is the

hottest issue in everywhere because it cannot be resolved and narrowed down in a short period of

time. However, for immigrant families especially Asian American, they have a more trouble

narrowing the generation gap because they grow up with different cultures between respecting

and freedom, and we called that is cultural generation gap. The Asian American immigrants

especially the first generation who settle down in a new country bring their own values, belief,

and life style, but that kind of personal luggage gives them a difficulty such as communication

and conduct codes when they adjust the new country (Leung 3). On the other hand, the second

generation of immigrant families who grow up with new country and new culture are not

embrace their parents culture which is Asian (Leung 3). According to Lui, those difference

factor about the culture leads them to have a cultural generation gap and a lot of conflicts which

also impact the diversity society (404). Although Asian American immigrant cultural generation

gap which come from differences and conflict is the serious issue and impact the diversity

society such as America, plenty of solutions always exist and that result can be the evidence of

the harmonious and peaceful diversity society.

1.5 generation can get confusion, misunderstanding the two different cultures and get

stereotype in diversity society. According to Kim and Ahn, Ethnic identity is the most important

thing to make the sense of society belonging to 1.5generation because for young Asian American

immigrants who adopt the new country and dont have any knowledge of their root culture,

easily can get some confusion about ethnic identity (354). A study of Kim, Lee, Park, and

Donovan from university Cal state Northridge, Kennesaw state university, University of Notre

dame, and University of Texas at Austin that was mentioned in their journal has shown the

difference rate of Ethnicity and generation status. As the rate shown in the Table 1, Asian

American has the highest rate more than any other ethnicity. (see table. 1).

When the second generation of immigrants discuss about their issue such as marriage,

education, and future job, parents cant understand 100%about their issue because of their

cultural difference and their belief (Leung 3). According to the journal about Asian American

cultural generation conflicts by Kim and Ahn, the Figure 1 shown as the most popular type of

conflicts and rate of conflicts gap between parents and child. That graph also presents the

existence of cultural differences. (see figure. 1)

Based on Leungs journal those kind of conflicts lead them to rupturing of communication (1).

Then, Lack of communication make a lot of conflict and cultural generation gap (Kim, Ahn 361).
