ConvertingbetweenForms
Itisveryusefulandessentialtoknowhowtoconvertbetweenthese3formstoget
piecesofinformation.

1) VertexformtoStandardform
y = 2(x 2)2 1
y = 2(x2 4x + 4) 1
y = 2x2 8x + 8 1
y = 2x2 8x + 7

AREADIAGRAM:
x -4

x x2 -4x

-4 -4x 4

2) StandardFormtoVertexForm
y = 2x2 8x + 7
y = 2(x2 4x) + 7
y = 2(x2 2x) + 7 8
y = 2(x2 2) 1
AREADIAGRAM:
x -2

x x2 -2x

-2 -2x 4

3) FactoredformtoStandardform
y = 2(x 1.293)(x 2.707)
y = 2(x2 2.707x 1.293x + 3.5)
y = 2(x2 + 4x + 3.5)
y = 2x2 + 8x + 7
4) StandardformtoFactoredform
y = 2x2 + 8x + 7
y = 2(x2 + 4x + 3.5)
y = 2(x2 2.707x 1.293x + 3.5)
y = 2(x 1.293)(x 2.707)

a) Thefactoringpart
x2 + 4x + 3.5 = 0
x2 + 4x = 3.5
x2 + 4x + 4 = 3.5 + 4
(x + 2)(x + 2) = 0.5
(x + 2) = 0.5
x = 0.707 2
x = 1.293 or x = 2.707
