‘number (Stho;)and flow Reynolds number (Re) has ben estab-
lished for small tairmaned-type sampling cyclones, Four cyclones
with body diameters of 38,57,89, and 140 mm were constructed
and tested with monodisperse nerosols over x range of flow
rates. The flow rates were chosen to provide preselected incre-
iments of particle Froude numbers. These flow rates for the four
tyelones spanned the range of 9.4 101080 L/min and provided
Froude numbers of 5,202.5, and 60. The resulting Reynolds
numbers (based upon cyclone body diameter and inlet tow ate)

aerosols used inthis study were fom 3.0-t017 4m aerodynamie

number and Reynolds number showed there to be nc effect of
Froude number (fr the range of Froude numbers teed). The
data have een fit by a least squares procedure toa quadratic
logarithmic function. In dition to development the rmpieca
‘correlation, the results ofthis study also provide data pertinent
to the regional deposition of liquid particles within the cyclone
and tothe transmission of sold particles through the cyclone.
The carryover of solid, 19-1 diameter particles is only 0.5%
renter than that of liquid particles ofthe same size.
Pursuant tothe Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, the United
Sistes Favizonmental Protetion Apeney (FPA) has changed
the defrition of ambient particulate matter. Thischange will
have a long-term effect on the manner of sampling airborne
Particulate matter from the atmesphere and [rom nvdustrial

late matter were based upon use ofthe high-volum:(hivel)
