Pep Rally a Blast!

Mrs. Pratt, Dr. Decter, Mrs. Greene, Mrs. Keith, and Mrs. Bryson get some Respect from the audience. (Contributed Photo)

Tea Gray

The pep rally was hosted on December 23, 2016 by Jay Kemp and Kayla Williams and they sure know how
to put on a show. When the seniors walked through that door and their song played, you already know that this
pep rally was going to be entertaining.

The seniors had some competition when it came to being the loudest at the prep rally. The juniors and seniors
were constantly trying to prove who was the loudest. It seemed like the freshmen picked up really quickly, but
werent part of the rivalry between the juniors and seniors.

Continuing on with the pep rally, Jay Kemp and Kayla then called up the fall and winter sports and to cheer on
the teams and recognize the seniors for the sports. The following teams were represented:

Boys and Girls Soccer Volleyball

Boys and Girls Cross Country Football
Boys and Girls Indoor Track Wrestling
Boys and Girls Basketball

In a surprise show, Mrs. Bryson, Dr. Decter, Mrs. Greene, Mrs. Keith and Mrs. Pratt put on an amazing perfor-
mance lip syncing to Respect, by Aretha Franklin. Mrs. Bryson really stole the spotlight when she lip synced
the lead of the song.

Mr. McTague and Ms. Duff had a dance off in the pep rally. Ms. Duff killed the dance off (sorry, Mr.
McTague) and the crowd went crazy when she dropped down into a split. Now, what administrator do you
know of who can do what Ms. Duff did at the pep rally?

Overall, the students had an amazing time and were really engaged in the pep rally. It was the perfect way to
celebrate the end of the year before everyone went home for Winter Break.

from 2:30-3:30. See Mrs. Wilson for more details.

Middlesex: In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds her-
self drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry blond clasmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively de-
velops between them--along with Callie's failure to develop--leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other
girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

The DREAM Act
Miles Dylan Wallace

The DREAM Act, an acronym standing for De-

velopment, Relief and Education for Alien and
Minors, is the proposal for the United States to
Grant Residency for foreign minors in an illegal-
ly immigrated family to attend school.

One thing that was made clear by The White

House in their 2010 report on the DREAM Act is
that the purpose of the act is not to grant amnesty.
According to the White Houses report on the
Dream Act, it requires responsibility and ac-
countability of young people who apply to adjust
their status under the DREAM Act, creating a
lengthy and rigorous process.

The requirements to qualify under the DREAM

Act include, but are not limited to: entering the
country (illegally) under the age of 16, living in
the United States for at least 5 years, graduating
from a U.S. high school or have a high school
degree equivalent. Also, anyone with a criminal
record is disqualified from receiving aid from the
DREAM Act.

Ms. Schock, a counselor at Career High School,

is actively a part of activism in support of the
DREAM act.

When asked how the DREAM Act will affect ed-

ucation, Ms. Schock said [The DREAM Act]
will level the playing fields and will help young
undocumented immigrants pursue the education opportunity that citizens have.

Per the White Houses DREAM Act Factsheet (2010), the act is described as a Limited, targeted legislation
that will allow only the best and brightest young people to earn their legal status after a rigorous and lengthy
process, and applies to those brought to the United States as minors through no fault of their own by their par-
ents, and who know no other home.

There is major distinction that should be made is between DACA and the DREAM Act. DACA is an immigra-
tion policy that was instated by the Obama Administration in 2012. The policy allows undocumented immi-
grants who entered the country illegally as minors 2 years of protection from deportation and allows people
who are properly registered the opportunity to work.

The act was pushed to congress many times, most notably in 2001 and 2010, but the bill failed to pass.

The DREAM Act, if proposed again and passed, would provide thousands of students with money for educa-
tional use and college tuition. How the new executive administration under President Trump will respond to
possible bills and ideas like the DREAM Act is yet to be seen.

Capstone Presentations Complete
Miles Dylan Wallace

This year, students from the class of 2017 across the nation have
been completing their Capstone projects. Though not the case in
many other schools, completing and passing the Capstone presenta-
tion at Career High School is a requirement for graduation. Although
the project is mandatory, many students still have fun completing and
presenting their projects.

The steps necessary to successfully complete the Capstone Project

include a proposal to a capstone mentor, an action, and a presenta-
tion.

The actual capstone itself must involve the 21st century competen-
cies (Critical Thinking, Analyzing Information, Communication and
Collaboration, Creativity, Self Direction/ Accountability and Citizen-
ship/ Responsibility). However, students are given the freedom to
create a project on a topic that truly interests them.

Inspiration for a capstone project can come from anywhere. When

asked where she received her inspiration for her Capstone project,
senior Josie Hill said she was inspired by the work done by her
church when they ran a soup kitchen for the hungry. Seniors Nyla Harrison and Josie Hill pose before
presenting their capstone projects. (Staff Photo)
For Josies project, she collected donations of hygiene items that were donated to the homeless community in
New Haven. She separated the hygiene items into packs that consisted of toothpaste, a toothbrush, soaps,
washcloths and deodorant that were to be distributed.

Students who are presenting their capstone projects in the second semester year will do so on May 19th, 2017.

Strategies for Midterms Success

Heaven Bradley asked Career students: How Did You Get Ready for Midterms?

FLASHCARDS , FLASHCARDS, FLASHCARDS!!!!- Tehyana Ferguson

TBH I studied the night before, that's how it works for me - Cherish Bell

I didnt study at all... - Donae Clark

Study by making flashcards and viewing teachers wikispaces, etc.- Nay Reddick

Ate food, stayed up all night studying, and drank coffee to keep myself awake- Kenyla Sanders

I make note cards for the classes I need the most and then go over the material again the day before the test.

Got Stress? Get Help!
Tea Gray

Midterms are here, and its that time of the year that people tend to hate. Midterms consists of tests that make
up 10% of your final grade. Midterms are very serious, and a lot of people get stressed because theyre so im-
portant. However, even though academics are important, its even more important to learn how to manage
your stress in a healthy way.

What is stress?
Stress is the response to pressure or threat. When people are in a stressful situation, adrenaline, a hormone se-
creted by the adrenal glands that increases rates of blood circulation and breathing, is released into the blood
and it creates a specific response. The fight-or-flight response is a response that prepares people for danger.
Long term stress produces low-level stress that can make a person tired or overwhelmed, though low amounts
of stress can actually help you perform well under pressure.

What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a reaction to stress. Anxiety is when you worry so much about something, and you cant stop worry-
ing until that thing is settled.
Test anxiety is the same thing as anxiety, but it happens when people are taking exams. Test anxiety causes
butterflies in the stomach or tension headaches. Test anxiety is different from simply doing badly on a test
because when you do badly on a test, you have something else on your mind. With test anxiety, all you can
think about is doing good on the test. The anxiety consumes your brain. Test anxiety is bad because people
worry so much about the test that they cant focus on the actual test questions. People who are perfectionists or
who worry a lot will have a harder time dealing with test anxiety.

What are the effects of stress

on teens?
According to Nurse Smart,
stress can have an effect physi-
cally on your body. You can
be more at risk for getting
colds, getting flu, or sore
throats.
School Psychologist Mr. Frank-
lin agrees with Nurse Smart.
Effects of stress can be physio-
logical like increased heart rate,
sweating etc. Your mood can
also be effected; for example,
some students can become irri-
table, get upset or frustrated
easily, or feel sad and de-
pressed. At times this can be
taken out on close friends or
family. Others may avoid tasks
that are difficult and withdraw. I
do believe that finding the right
balance is important because a
little bit of stress can help get us
motivated to get work done!

5
What can teens do to prevent getting stressed during midterms?
Nurse Smart recommends physical activity to prevent stress. Exercise, they say, helps decrease stress. Doing
some mindful exercise helps, getting good nutrition, drinking a lot of water, not cram but study in little
chunks, so youll be prepared for the test.

Mr. Franklin also sees the effects of stress in teens. He recommends the following tips to Career students in
order to manage stress in a healthy way:
Create a schedule and stick to it
Break large assignments into small, manageable tasks
Celebrate when you finish and/or plan a fun activity for when you complete something
Work in groups or with friends
Study early in the semester (reviewing notes each night from the current days class)
Get involved in an after school group/activity and/or exercise
Spend some time outside
Maintain a good diet
Feel free to talk to someone at school (there are many people who can provide support)

Mr Franklin also emphasizes the importance of just slowing down to think and reflect on what makes you
stressed out. Sometimes it may be helpful to reflect after feeling stressed. Identifying triggers or certain situa-
tions that are particularly stressful for you may help you handle them better in the future.

Midterms will be over soon enough, but make sure to reach out to an adult at Career if you find youre becom-
ing overwhelmed by stress.

Self Care Tips: 11 Coping Mechanisms

Natalya Marquez

Now that Midterms are over, here are a few ways to help recover from the physical and mental trauma you
may have experienced.

Drink! Water!
Its good for your skin. Good for your kidneys.
Good for your man. Just drink water.

Move things around in your room

Even if it isnt drastic, a little change of scen-
ery is always good. Dont ask why, it just is.

Say No
Reject what you dont enjoy. You dont need
an explanation

Say Yes
Try something youve always wanted to try but
were too afraid to. You finished 8 tests, what else
is there to fear?

Declutter
Decluttering does not only mean your physical
environment. Declutter old ideas, bad relation-
ships, your bad habits.
6
Go to the gym
Even if youve been avoiding the gym and just taking naps for the past few months (oh no, that was
me) try to do something physical. All youll be focused on is yourself.

Catch up on your favorite show

After all the homework youve been doing, you probably havent been able to watch your favorite
show. But find a day this weekend to lay in bed and just watch something you enjoy.

Open your window

Change the air in your room. Its as refreshing as its hyped up to be.

Reward yourself
You had a week comprised of only tests. Recognize your hard work.

Detach yourself from your phone

An hour before you go to bed, set your phone to Do Not Disturb. No one is more important than get-
ting a good nights rest.

Do whatever you have to do to take care of yourself. Your grades are nothing without you. so practice healthy
self care.

How to Get Rid of Acne
Ashley Cisneros

Whether its due to hormones or stress, teenagers are more prone to getting acne. These natural remedies and tips may
help could help you.

Avoid touching your face. Not touching your face may be difficult for some because its natural. Avoid popping
pimples and squeezing blackheads because the bacteria on your hands could introduce more bacteria onto your face
and make your acne worse.

Shower often. Showering regularly helps keeps oil production low, kill dead skin cells and bacteria.

Drink a lot of water. Drinking water is extremely important for keeping your skin pimple-free. Water helps detox-
ify your body and purify your skin.

Eat healthy. Getting the proper amount of nutrients from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteins could help
limit oil production.

Get enough sleep. If you dont get enough sleep every night, your skin wont be able to repair itself. Sleep also
reduces stress and stress causes acne.

Use oil- free makeup. Avoid makeup that contains oil as this can worsen your acne. Let your skin breathe once in
awhile as makeup can clog your pores. Clean your makeup brushes regularly to prevent bacteria growth.

Apply tea tree oil to active pimples. Tea tree oil is a antibacterial agent that can kill acne- causing bacteria. Add a
drop of tea tree oil in water and use a cotton ball/pad and apply it to your face before you go to sleep.

Use bentonite clay masks. Clay masks work to clean your pores get rid of acne. The Aztec Secret Indian Heal-
ing Clay Deep Pore Cleansing is a great product to use.

Use a toner after cleansing. Toners help pores become smaller and removes excess oil from the skin. Witch hazel
is a natural astringent and is one of the most popular acne treatments worldwide. Thayers Witch Hazel With Aloe
Vera Unscented is a popular recommendation.

Moisturize. If you have dry skin, moisturizing your face will help keep it hydrated. If your skin is too oily or too
dry it can cause acne. If you have oily skin use moisturizer less often.

Its Sports-- With Robots
Gabby Banks

The Career Robotics Team is part of a group called

FIRST, also known as For Inspiration, Recognition,
Science, and Technology. FIRST is an organization
that inspires young people to pursue science and tech-
nology. Our school has our own Robotics Team, Team
558, which consistent of students and adult mentors who
come together to build robots. These robots are built to
compete in the FIRST Robotics Competitions, where
they complete some type of sport or task. Dean Kamen,
founder of FIRST, said, FIRST Robotics Competition
is the ultimate sport for the mind.

In the competitions, Team 558 is given parts to a robot

and within 6 weeks they have to design and build a ro-
bot that has to complete a certain objective. An example
would be throwing or tossing a wiffle ball, which the
team has to do this year. Senior Joey Ostuno, one of the
team leaders, explained that you build a robot that has
to complete some sort of sport. We go to competitions
just like a sports team would, but our robot competes
instead of us.

mountains of paperwork, interfacing with engineering
mentors, or supplying the team with food/snacks. She does her best to be there for the team and help the team
flourish.

In the past four years, our Robotics Team has won the state championship 3 times. They have also received
the Chairmans Award, awarded to the team that most emulates the mission and goals of FIRST. It is not on-
ly building the robot and competing, it is getting the word out there that STEM is important, said Scheetz

Although this team may seem like all fun and games, the Robotics Team does give back to the community.
Last August they went to Camp Rising Sun, a camp for children who have been diagnosed with cancer, and let
the children use the robots they made.

The Robotics Team is a group of people that come together not only to build robots but to have fun. Joey
Ostuno encourages people to give it a try. Just show up! I never would have gotten into Robotics if I didnt
show up one day freshman year.

Peace, Power, and Protest: The Womens March in NYC
By: Ashley Cisneros

On Saturday January 21, an estimated 250,000 or more par-

ticipated in the New York City Womens March on 42nd
Street. This march supported equality and civil rights for
everyone. The Womens March in NYC was one of the
many events that came the day after Donald Trump became
the President of the United
States.

Many showed up to show their support of Planned

Parenthood, equal pay, a living minimum wage, reproduc-
tive rights, racial equality, and more. People made signs to
show their support. Marchers had originally planned to go
all the way to Trump Tower, but routed around the corner
by police.

This historic and peaceful event was open to the public. The
march was not violent or angry but more friendly and uplift-
ing. Celebrities like Rosie Perez and Taylor Schilling spoke
at the New York event. The New York Womens March Two young girls at the New York City Womens
conveyed a positive message without using violence. March. (Staff Photo)

Teacher of the Month: Mr. Alwang

Gabby Banks

Hes a really understanding, levelheaded teacher, and a great person

overall. Ronnie, Junior

Mr . Alwang is great, he inspires students to do their best and try their

hardest! He is also funny and make math enjoyable! He is awesome!
Josie, Senior

Mr. Alwang has been one of the best teachers I have had through my
high school experience. Ever since I was a freshman, he would greet me
in the hallways every morning or whenever he saw me just to ask how my day was going or how softball was
going. I remember freshman year he came to watch the baseball and softball game, when we played in Bran-
ford, and he would sit there and cheer everybody on. Also every time I needed help in Algebra I, would not
hesitate to ask him because I know he would teach it until I understood it...I know when I graduate in June I
will miss having Mr. Alwang, but I know if I ever needed him I can always email him. Lindsey, Senior

Mr. Alwang is one of the best math teachers in this school, in my opinion. The way that he taught was fun
and his class helped inspire collaboration. He also has a ton of pride for Career, as he often donates more than
necessary to support our teams. Hes a fantastic teacher who goes above and beyond for Career. Seth, Junior

When I had him Freshman year, he held me to a higher standard than anyone had before. It pushed me to
stop procrastinating and do actual work. He took time to help whenever anyone needed it and treated every-
one with respect. Gabby, Senior

A Life and a Legacy: Martin Luther King, Jr.
Erik Sarango

Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist and an activist and leader in the civil rights movement. He
was very strong leader who believed in peace and justice and achieved gains in freedom for Black people in
America. He was born on January 15, 1929 and was sadly and tragically assassinated on April 4, 1968.

During his life, he had many incredible achievements. He was the first president of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference. He is known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil dis-
obedience. King helped organize many movements throughout his career such as The Albany Movement, the
March on Washington, and nonviolent protests. Actually, during the March on Washington movement he de-
livered his famous I Have a Dream speech. He was established as one of the greatest speakers in American
history. On October 14, 1964 MLK received the Nobel Peace Prize. Many significant events occurred after
this and all his efforts have proven to have an incredible impact on civil rights of people in the U.S and on the
future of this country and its people.

Martin Luther King, Jr. speaks at

the 1963 March on Washington,
where he gave his I Have a
Dream speech.

(Biography.com)

Career: What do you think is the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.?

American people produce some of the most amazing heroes that humankind has ever produced. [King] rep-
resents a different aspect of America that has been long overlooked. He stood for justice, he stood up for
American values and in my mind, he is the American Hero Mr.Brennan

He has many legacies. Obviously one of the most important was peaceful protests. One of the disagreements
they had in the 60s was Malcolm X believing that you fight defensively. In other words, if someone attacks
you then you attack back. [King] believed even if that happens you don't, because then you're using the same
methods as your oppressor. So you always take the high road. So for me, his main legacy is to never give into
violence even when someone is violent against you. Mr.Merk

I believe Martin Luther King's legacy was the perfect example of possibility thinking, of being able to think
outside of the box, of not allowing circumstances to limit faith and hope. I believe his legacy was exactly that:
if there's any example behind what possibility thinking is and what dreaming is, it has to be Martin Luther
King. Even him knowing that he personally won't see it, even prophesying and saying that he might not get
there when we get there, he still knew and believed in that vision. Mr. Kemp

Peoples rights and peace amongst everyone-- I believe that would be his biggest legacy. He stood up for the
civil rights movement and people getting treated equally and fighting for the Black race. Mrs. Love

The Distracted Generation
By Sheyla Pedraza

Technology is a very beneficial source that helps most

of us with anything we need. Communication is one of
them-- technology helps us stay connected with every-
one in the world. Whether its to receive good or bad
news, there are many ways to stay connected-- espe-
cially with social media. Teenagers generally use tech-
nology to stay connected with their friends on apps
such as Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and Face-
book .

Unfortunately, technology is not always a beneficial. It

can get in the way of the student's education. The jour-
nal of Media Education has reported that students
spend a fifth of their time in class engaged in activities
on their devices that have nothing to do with their schoolwork. The University of Nebraska- Lincoln also
found similar results, but they said that the distraction has worsened over the years. It seems as if many teen-
agers have stopped being interested in reading in favor of technology, especially in high school.

Phones distract students from focusing from what they are reading especially like when they get a text mes-
sage or a notification, said junior Ashley Cisneros. They run up to their phones and forget about what they
were doing before and spend hours on their phones without noticing. This even happens at school; a lot of
students are trying to do their classwork but are distracted by who's texting them or by whats happening on
their phones. This gets in the way of their education, which causes them to get in trouble.

Of course, technology isnt all bad. Cell phones can give us access to information and help us learn a lot
about different subjects. However, for kids who are having a hard time with their homework, just try to turn
off your phone and turn on airplane/do not disturb mode until you're done with all your work.

So You Want to Be a Writer?
Thomas Russell
Do any of you want to be writers? If so, here are a few things you should know about being a writer. There
are different types of writers, lets go through them.
Novelist: A Novelist is a person that writes books of fiction. When it comes to making money, the amount of
money you get depends on how many copies of your book(s) are sold. What are the requirements to being a
novelist, you may ask? Well, you dont need a degree nor do you need to go to college to be a novelist. You
just need to be able to write, be creative and imaginative, and have the dedication to write. Speaking of
books, since a novelist would mainly write a fictional story you must pick a genre, create characters, decide
on what kind of world your book(s) take place in and the plot of the story. When you finished your book, you
must go through it to check for any errors such as misspelled words or improper grammar, once you take
care of that you must get it published. There are three options, send it to a literary agent, send it to a publish-
er or publish it yourself.
Journalist: A Journalist is a person who writes for newspapers or magazines. The average annual salary for
a journalist is $36,000 which is equivalent to $17.31 per hour. The requirements for being a journalist are a
bachelors degree and work experience. As a journalist, you must write about things that relate to real life
such as a dog saving its owners life, a tragic accident such as a car crash, two celebrities becoming a couple,
basically anything thatll get the medias attention.

What you shouldnt do: Dont assume there is any single path or playbook writers need to follow. Just do
what works best for you. Dont try to write like your idols, just be yourself, it may sound cheesy but its true.
Dont be dishonest, rude or hostile. Dont ever hate someone for the feedback they give you. No piece of
writing is universally beloved; every reader, editor or agent will have a different opinion of your work and
there is value in that. Dont be susceptible to the barbs of online trolls. Dont ever write something in an at-
tempt to satisfy a market trend and make a quick buck. Dont be spiteful about another writers success.
Dont ever assume that being a writer is easy, because it isnt. Dont forget to get out once in a while. Writ-
ing is a reflection of real life, its all too easy to sit at your desk for too long and forget to live it. Dont be
afraid to give up on a particular piece. Sometimes a story just doesnt work, and you shouldnt spend years
languishing in something you just cant fix. Besides, you can always come back to it later. Dont ever give
up on writing entirely. Writers write, its what they do, its what they have to do. Sure, we can all say that
we give up, but lets be honestvery few of us ever do and none of us are ever really all that surprised when
we find ourselves back at our computers, tapping away, and waiting for that electric, amazing moment when
the pebble of a story shakes loose and begins to skitter down that great hill. Everyone who wishes to be a
writer, ask yourselves What do I think about being a writer? and if you want to be a writer then go ahead
and be a writer, if not, then thats okay too. Dont ever let anyone or anything stand in your way and follow
your dreams!

Opinion: Security Line Checks Unfair
Keyavonie Lawrence

Today in high school, students walk through metal de-

tectors and get their bags checked while teachers get to
walk around freely. If students have to get checked,
teachers should get checked too. Teachers could have
anything in their bags and administration, students, and
security wouldn't even know because teachers dont get
checked.

11th grader Brianna Trajeski said, I feel like its ridicu-

lous that teachers shouldnt have to go through the secu-
rity line because just like how students can bring in
dangerous items, so can teachers.

Kayla Franklin, 11th grade, agreed. Teachers should be

checked because administration worries about students
bringing dangerous items, but teachers can also bring in
items such as lighters when they do labs for science
classes. 11th grader Julius Dixon agrees. I feel like
its unsafe and unfair because teachers can bring any-
thing to school without anybody knowing.

Administrators understand students frustration. Mia Duff, assistant principal, said, I trust the teachers, but I
understand if the students feel like its unfair because teachers can come to school not being in the right state
of mind. If students feel unsafe, the teachers should be checked just like the students because I wouldnt mind
being checked by security.

Christopher Merk, History teacher said, If teachers had to be checked, I wouldnt mind-- but personally, I
think they shouldnt because teachers have to prepare for their classes and wouldnt have time to wait behind
like 50 students just to be checked.

Even though there was a valid point about why teachers shouldnt go through the metal detectors to be
checked, many still agreed to be checked if it ever happened just so students can feel safe and so that teachers/
administrators dont have special treatment.

Elm City Express

Professional Soccer Coming to the Elm City
Charles Sakouvogui

New hope is coming to the many talented soccer

players in New Haven. A professional soccer
team, Elm City Express (ECX), is on its way to the
Elm City. ECX will be playing in the the National
Premier Soccer League (NPSL) which is the larg-
est professional-amateur soccer league in US. To
many soccer fans in New Haven, this will give
them the opportunity to enjoy watching a high lev-
el of soccer in their own city and might even give
some of New Havens most talented players an
opportunity to play at the professional level.

The President of Elm City Express, Zack Henry,

played soccer at Amherst College and then went
on to play semi-pro in Puerto Rico. After tearing
his ACL, Mr. Henry accepted the fact that his rela-
tionship with the game of soccer is going to be dif-
ferent and used his business background to start
K2 Soccer SA, which owns and operates Clube
Atletico Turbano, a professional team in Brazil.
When asked about his new role with the Elm City
Express, Mr. Henry said the opportunity to bring ECX to the Elm City got me excited. Mr. Henry wanted to
start his team in a community where he would be involved. Shortly after deciding to bring the Express to New
Haven, Mr. Henry joined the Board of Directors at Elm City Internationals, a non-profit organization in New
Haven that uses soccer to engage low income youth in academics. Mr. Henry said engaging in the Greater
New Haven community is our vision. While some players playing for the Express will be from Brazil or out
of state, the ECX roster will also be comprised of players from communities within Greater New Haven.

There is already a lot of excitement from young local soccer players in New Haven. Mohamed Kourouma, a
senior at Wilbur Cross High School, said I think it's a great opportunity for players in New Haven and all
around Connecticut to get some exposure. There are lots of great players in this area, but in order for them to
be put out there and get recognized they have to leave the state and go find a team that allows them to get
recognition. It will definitely be something that will be greatly appreciated in the community.

Soccer fans can look forward to this spring, since the league will run from May to August. The exact dates are
not defined yet by the NPSL, but will be announced later in January. Games will be held at Yale Universitys
Reese Stadium.

Moving Up with Manchester United
John Cardenas

Manchester United are one of the top teams in the Barclays Premier League. Already winning the FA Com-
munity Shield back on August 7, 2016, Manchester United beat former Premier League champions Leicester
City in a 2-1 score.

However, Manchester United aren't having the season everyone expected from them coming into the season.
After signing 4 top class players-- Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Paul Pogba--
and hiring a new manager, the team currently sits at 6th on the Premier League table. They have been show-
ing much of a world class team they are through qualifying for the round of 32 in the Europa League.

Every athlete is individually a great players in the Manchester United squad, starting from the back with goal-
keeper David De Gea. David De Gea is one of the top 4 goalkeepers in the world, and is wanted by Spanish
giants Real Madrid. Manchester United also have great defenders such as Antonio Valencia, who helps attack
from the right side and drops back quickly to help on defense. The team also has 2 great Center Backs: Chris
Smalling and Eric Bailly. Those two in the back can prevent so many counter attacks and stop a lot of pacy
attackers. Antonio Darmian plays on the left defense, helping in crossing the ball into the box to help create
dangerous plays and plays defense aggressively when needed.

On the midfield, Manchester United have amazing talent with Ander Herrera and world record signing Paul
Pogba. Those two help feed the ball to the strikers and play very dangerous plays, always leading to a danger-
ous attack. Continuing on the front line, Manchester United have Zlatan Ibrahimovic, someone who has
scored the most beautiful and fantastic goals ever.

Manchester United are the best team because they have it all-- everything from a fantastic coach to fantastic
players. Even in the long run, the team will be producing fantastic players from the youth academy, so expect
them to win the champions league in at least 4 years.

Elm City Internationals Scores
Mentoring Program Uses Soccer to Positively Impact Immigrant Kids
Charles Sakouvogui

New Havens immigrant population has seen many people coming from all over the world. The New Haven
Public School system has positively been impacted by this because these kids have brought diverse perspec-
tives into the community; however, these children have also faced many challenges like adapting to the cul-
ture and speaking the language.

Lauren Mednick, a New Haven resident who attended Conte West Hills and Hopkins School, opened a
mentoring program in the Elm City to assist those immigrant children who were full of talent but lacked
the resources to fulfill their dreams. Through her experience with IRIS, The Integrated Refugee and Immi-
grant Services, Lauren decided to found Elm City Internationals. She said that she met three, 7th grade
boys who were struggling academically and behaviorally. Lauren then said that she discovered that these
3 boys shared my love of soccer. I decided to use their love for soccer as a positive force that would build
their confidence and keep them focused in school. I knew that they all had potential and wanted to unleash
it.

Elm City Internationals helps children be prepared both academically and athletically for college. Sergio
Olmedo, 22, who attended Hill Regional Career High School his freshman year before transferring to Hop-
kins school, said Elm City Internationals helped me through the application process to go to a private
school. Sergio graduated from Hopkins School and went on to college at Santa Clara University, where he
is in his last trimester before graduating. He described Elm City Internationals as a family, a big family,
where even though you don't go to the same school with kids and don't have the same background, you still
come together as one and put your differences aside for the love we all have in common, which is soccer.

I, Charles Sakouvogui, was lucky enough to get recruited by Elm City Internationals just a week after mov-
ing to the United States and the whole experience of being part of such a wonderful program has helped me
adapt much faster. The best things about Elm City (as we call it) is that you have really good people
around, from the players to the staff. I get to spend most of my quality times with them. From college visits
to soccer tournaments, the thing we share as a group is love, a true family love.

Senior Student Profile: Moubarak Ouro
Charles Sakouvogui
Born on December 28, 1997, Moubarak Ouro grew up in Lome, Togo where
he spent his early childhood. Due to the economic struggle in his country,
Moubarak moved with his brother and sisters to the United States in 2007.

After attending East Rock Middle School for 4 years, Moubarak decided to
spend the next four years of high school at Hill Regional Career High School
where his sister Rafiatou Ouro was a sophomore going into her junior year at
the time.

Moubarak is an athlete who both played squash and soccer. After a prolific
first year in high school, Moubarak had a offer from Brooks School, a private
co-educational school in North Andover, Massachusetts where he repeated
the freshman year. Once in prep school, he found the workload totally differ-
ent than public school.

He described his freshman year at Brooks as the toughest because he had to

adjust to the new school. There was more work and you had to use your
time wisely, said Moubarak. Far away from his family, he decided to come
back to home. He decided to come back to Career High.

Moubarak Ouro is now a senior and looking to graduate at the end of the
year. He plans to go to Southern Connecticut State University.

World Mourns Chapaconese Tragedy

John Cardenas

On November 29 2016, the beautiful game of futbol experienced a drastic event involving Brazilian soccer
team Chapecoense. On that night, the team was headed to Columbia to play in the Copa Sudamericana Final
against Atletico Nacional, but sadly never made it due to their plane crashing on a mountainside 8 miles away
from their destination. The crash killed 71 people, including most of the Chapecoense team. According to The
Guardian, there was also a delegation travelling with them that included 21 journalists.

There were only six people who survived the crash. Alan Ruschel, Hlio Neto and Jackson Follman, were all
badly injured. Two members of the flight crew had minor injuries. According to The Guardian, journalist Ra-
fael Valmorbida is also in intensive care with multiple rib
fractures.

As of December 8 2016, Chapecoense player Alan Ru-

schel, has finally been able to walk again. The team Atleti-
co Nacional have requested that the team Chapecoense be
given the Copa Sudamericana after their flight crashed in
Columbia. In addition, all the clubs in Brazil have pledged
to loan players to Chapecoense and to keep Chapecoense
in the top tier in Brazilian futbol and not get relegated for
three seasons. The South American Football Confedera-
tion declared Chapecoense Copa Sudamericana 2016
Champions.

Lady Panthers Get the Job Done
Heaven Bradley

The Lady Panthers are busy creating a legacy.

This year, they have been bringing it hard to
take over and put their name in stone! Cur-
rently the Panthers are 10-2, ranked #8 in the
state. With the support and training from
coach Bethke, the Panthers have recently tak-
en the dub against Hillhouse with the score of
52-47 going into double overtime.

The Panthers recently gave Guilford a run for

their money with the score of 54-
50. Sometimes the path to success isnt easy.
Teammates can disagree from time to time,
but #11 Kayla Franklin states that no matter
the situation they're in, what happens off the
the court doesnt affect what happens on the
court. We work as a team! Franklin is deter-
mined to take home a ring after the season.
According to KyJae Hargrove (#1), Im
looking forward to winning and improving
individually and as a team. Dedication is key,
and Hargrove agrees that all players have the
same goals so they have to keep the faith they
have in themselves. Sophomore Ciara Little (Photo/Dave Phillips)

Kayla Williams (#23) is also looking forward to the future. Williams stated that the team doesnt always
come out strong, but they finish strong . Working together requires communication and making sure everyone
sees eye to eye. and Williams agrees that its something that the group could work on.

Ciara Little (#22) has faith in her team.Im looking forward to seeing how far my team can go working to-
gether getting this ring! We are good working together on the court and getting the job done. According to
Little, her future goals for her team include being more supportive and encouraging on and off the court.

Preview: Super Bowl 51
John Cardenas

The Falcons Matt Ryan (L) and the Patriots Tom Brady (R)

It's the time of the month where everyone is psyched for the Super Bowl. Super Bowl 51 will feature the
New England Patriots (14-2) against the Atlanta Falcons (11-5). Both teams have had successful seasons.
According to CBS Sports, the Falcons are 2nd overall in offense, being 5th in rushing yards with 120.5
yards and 3rd in passing with 295.3 yards. However, the Falcons have a really low defensive ranking, only
being 25th overall. The New England Patriots are a more balanced team, being 4th overall on offense with
117.0 rushing yards, 4th in passing with 269.2 yards, and 8th on defense overall.

Junior Patriots fan Julius Dixon is positive that the Patriots will win the Super Bowl because of how hard-
working they are. The Patriots play every game like as if it's their last game, and they also have Tom
Brady who's the G.O.A.T who will lead them to victory. Dixons score prediction is Patriots 31-- Falcons
24.

Officer Gibbs, who coaches football at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), said that the
Falcons have an amazing offense, which makes their defense better because they can always be in the
lead. Officer Gibbs predicts the Falcons will win 35-28. Officer Gibson also said that Tom Brady and the
Patriots are going to have a slight advantage. Because they have played in so many Super Bowls in the past
years, theyll be able to handle the pressure the Super Bowl brings upon the teams competing.

The Falcons and Patriots will face off in the Super Bowl at 6:30 PM on Sunday, February 5.

Senior Spotlight
Mya Yorke

Not many people understand the pressure of

being a student athlete at Hill Regional Career
High School. But these senior basketball play-
ers make up the definition of what it means to
be a team. Seniors Anthony Ant Calder,
Daniel Dan Ampofo, Tyquise Ty Bur-
ney , Malcolm Mack Driffin, and Odean
TJ Brown all are examples of doing your
best throughout your last years as a unit.

I interviewed each senior and asked them dif-

ferent questions in order to cover all aspects
of being some of the top athletes at Career.
The first person I interviewed was Anthony
Calder. I asked him about being in the top five
starting the game because being a team cap-
tain takes a determined person. Anthony said,
To be in the starting five means that I hold a
higher level of responsibility to start the
game, setting a good tone for the rest of the
players that get in after me.

Senior Daniel Ampofo, who was recently

awarded MVP, spoke about the challenges he
had to face while being one of the top players.
Dan stated that Being a top player on the team is a hard task because you have to be a leader at all times on
and off the court. You cant make many mistakes and all eyes are on you, but I have been looking forward to
being in this position, so I am well prepared and blessed to be where I am today.

Malcolm Mack Driffin, who has been playing basketball since he was 8, spoke about the topic of motiva-
tion. Mack said that he really has to prove people wrong a lot in his life, but uses this to motivate him. I
play to prove everybody wrong and show others what the team and I are capable of, despite what happened
in the past. Knowing that I can show others how hard I work motivates me to always stay on top of my
game.

Tyquise Burney, who has shown a lot of leadership in each game, discussed the unity of the team. Burney
stated that the team plays with so much unison because we started to trust each other fully and gained
chemistry, not only on the court but off as well. We wanted to push ourselves and win this season and not go
out like we did last year.

Another senior, TJ Brown, should be praised for doing excellent work not only on the court but in academ-
ics. When asked about the challenges of balancing his school work and basketball, Brown said that the
hardest [challenge] might have to be coming home late from practices and having to finish homework. Also
to keep a basketball mindset as well as a school mindset. But at the end of the day, I personally have a win-
ning mindset both on and off the court.

Ciarcias Trip to Eddies
Selflessly collected by Erik Sarango, who listens to Mr. Ciarcias jokes so you dont have to

As I walked into Eddies, Jamal asked me, Do you have 50 cent? I said, Yeah, I do. He then said, Can I
have it? I said, Yeah sure, I have the CD in my car.

So I saw the rack of chips, and they were all standing up on the rack. I looked over to Eddie and said, I don't
get it, Eddie. He replied, What do you mean? I said, How can these be Lays if they're standing up?

Then I said Eddie, isn't cannibalism illegal? He looked at me perplexed, and asked, Why do you say that?
I said, Well, because this bag is filled with Dori-toes!

Afterwards, Eddie asked me what I was doing as I shuffled a bag of chips from side to side. I stopped and said,
Well, aren't these Ruffles? Eddie said, Ciarcia, I think it's time for you to go.

As I was walking back through the field, I ran into a couple of students with school snacks. One student of-
fered me a little bag of goldfish. I poured a couple into my hand and ate them, then made a strange look. The
student asked me what was wrong. Im not sure, I replied, but these taste a little fishy.

Stay tuned for more of Mr. Ciarcias unique humor in next months issue of The Panther Press.
