Background
This module is designed to provide the ChemEng Student
to understand important concepts and principles of
organic chemistry. You will learn about the physical shape,
stereochemistry and reactivity of common organic
molecules. You will learn about reaction mechanisms as a
tool for understanding general processes rather than
simply memorising specific conversions. Some industrial
routes to commercially important organic molecules will
be presented. By the end of this module you will be
familiar with the basic types of reaction in which they
participate, and the reactive intermediates which are
involved
Learning Outcome
Setelah mengikuti perkuliahan ini mahasiswa dapat:
1. memahami struktur dan ikatan dalam senyawa organik, Struktur
Atom, Senyawa Ion, Kovalen, rumus senyawa organik, gugus

Class Information and Announcement
Announcements regarding schedule changes
or other developments will be made in class at
the earliest possible time. Otherwise,
Information will be distributed through Class
coordinator or via e-mail.
Coordinator:
Class A: Habib Abdul Aziz
Class B: Zahrial Rizaldie
Class C: Harland
Lectures
Class C:
Wednesday, 9:30 11:10 am, Room F2.5
Class A
Thursday, 9:30 11:10 am, Room F2.5
Class B
Thursday, 12:30 14:00 pm, Room H4.7
Assumption: you are adult students
Attendance in lecture is expected
Do not ask me to re-lecture material you missed.
Regardless of your excuse for missing class you made a
choice not to attend and you are responsible for the
material you missed.
.
Lectures - Agreement
Please refrain from any disruptive activities in the class, which
might affect other students. This includes reading
newspapers, solving crossword puzzles, texting, emailing,
using cell phones or iPods, browsing the internet, playing
games, talking, etc.
In addition to the student using the laptop, students around
the laptop user also have lower attention on the content in
the lecture. So laptops may not be used for email, Facebook
and other activities not directly related to the lecture.
Your classmates are allowed and encouraged to ask you to
discontinue distracting behavior.
To help promote a good learning environment for all, please
be respectful in your behavior towards your fellow students
and your lecturer.
Tutorials
Tutorials may be given to students if required.
Tutorials will be used to discuss questions,
endofchapter problems, and material from
the lectures or text.
Quiz may be given during tutorial session
Homeworks
Homework assignments will be given approximately weekly
throughout the semester
The homework points to be added to your grade will be
determined by calculating the percentage of the assigned
problems for which you have received credit. If you have
done all the problems, you will receive 100 homework
points. Doing half of the problems will get you 50 points, and
so on.
Please note that the homework counts for 25% of your
grade, so if you dont do any of the problems, it will probably
cost you a letter grade! More importantly, if you are not
working problems regularly you are unlikely to be prepared
to do well on exams.
Exams
There will be 2 exams
Mid semester exam, account for 30 %
Final Exam, account for 40 %
There will be no regularly scheduled makeup exams. If you
have a valid, serious reason, or a university-approved
absence to miss one of the exams, you need to immediately
contact me to discuss your situation. If possible, you should
discuss your absence with me before the exam is given. you
will be required to provide suitable documentation that
your absence should be excused according to University
rules and regulations
Grading
Attendance: 5 %

Special Consideration
Grades are earned.
Grades are not awarded
Grades cannot be negotiated.
Grades cannot be influenced by factors such as:
I like you
You like me (rare circumstance)
I feel sorry for you
You are a nice person in good standing with the university.
You will lose a scholarship
A previously excellent GPA will be ruined
You will not graduate on time!

14
Important Note
I am not expected to
Provide extra credit
Negotiate grades

15
Expectations - Students
A professional student is expected to
attend class
Have course materials
study
do the homework
be prepared for class
be prepared for tests
do well

16
Expectations - Lecturer
I am expected to
attend class
prepare lecture materials
present lecture materials
prepare and grade tests
be available for outside consultation
keep accurate records

17
Doing Well
Read the chapter before lecture
Attend lecture
Take notes
Do not rely on copies of Power Points
Re-read the chapter after lecture
Review lecture notes daily
Rewriting the lecture notes is strongly suggested
Keep, maintain, and study note cards
Do homework problems.
Form a study group
Learn the functional groups

18
The Functional Groups

Families of Organic Compounds

Millions of compounds
Thousands discovered every year
Task of knowing the chemistry would be overwhelming
However, compounds can be grouped into families
Based upon common structural features
Suggests common reactivity
You must know the Table of Functional Groups provide by me. Others
will come along during the semester
This course is a survey the chemistry and properties of organic
compounds
It is taught as a tour of the functional groups
Functional Groups
Functional Groups

21
Wow!
Thats a lot of stuff to learn and you expect me
to know it.
Do you believe that this is the only course I am
taking?
This is an important question which we must
answer!
You may not like the answer.

22
Is this the only course I am taking?
YES
Time invested = Desired grade
Average professional 60 hours/week
Professional student
~18 hours/week in class
60 18 = 42
42hours/6 days = 7 hours per day
Or approximately 2 hours/class
Time invested = Desired grade

23
Why?
Your Role:
The job of understanding the material is yours.

My Role:
Guide and facilitate
Ive been here.
Ive done it.
I have the t-shirt (at least a C and a B in Organic I and II)

Best advice I can give you!

If you choose to study organic chemistry like other courses you have taken
you might do well, but the odds are against it.

24
Major Complaint
I cant possibly learn this stuff.
I cant learn all of those functional groups.
Why? Again you arent going to like the
answer.
You dont study enough.
Average of 42 hours per week beyond your
class is expected
To obtain a C - the average grade

25
Comment
I have never met a student who could not
learn organic chemistry.

Some students might make 3 or more

attempts to learn the material.

The number of attempts required is

dependent upon you.
26
Why dont students learn?
Fear
Wrong attributes
Lack of confidence
Too much confidence
Failure to follow through
Paralysis due to personal/family problems
Failure to imitate best practices
Lack of balance of social and academic life
Failure to appreciate delayed gratification.

27
What is the minimum I need to do to get
out of here?
Depends, what grade do you want?
W, E, or D
Attend class irregularly
Study just before each test
Rely upon your memory
C, B, or A
Never miss class
Read the chapter before and after class
Review lecture notes daily
Study 2 hours per day, 6 days per week
Make and use note cards
Do all assigned homework problems
See me for assistance early and often

28

Academic Honesty and Integrity
We do not lie, cheat, nor steal nor tolerate those
who do.
Upon accepting admission to Chem Eng UMS, a
student immediately assumes a commitment to
uphold the Honor Code, to accept responsibility
for learning, and to follow the philosophy and
rules of the Honor System. Students will be
required to state their commitment on
examinations, research papers, and other
academic work.
Academic Honesty and Integrity
It is expected that students will maintain the highest standards of academic
honesty.
With respect to homework assignments, it is expected that no student will
turn in work that is not his or her own by copying the work of another student
or by using the work or solutions from this course given in previous years.
Discussion of approaches to solving the homework problems after attempting
to work the problems independently, however, is permitted and encouraged.
It is expected that during a test or examination, a student will not:
Accept or use information of any kind from other students;
Represent the work of another student as his or her own;
Use aids to memory other than those expressly permitted by the examiner.
Following a test or examination, a student will not try to deceive teachers or
graders by misrepresenting or altering his or her previous work. In advance of
a test or exam, a student will not knowingly obtain access to the exam
questions.
Departures from the above standards are contrary to fundamental principles
of Chem Eng UMS and of the larger scientific community. Such departures are
considered serious offenses for which disciplinary penalties, including
suspension and expulsion, can be imposed.
