SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
This short answer portion is a key component of your application, so make sure to be detailed and
informed in your writing. Each answer must be no more than 1200 characters and be able to fit into
the space provided below. Feel free to be as creative as you like and make sure to proofread your work.

Why have you chosen this specific internship? Please explain its connection to your career goals.

My choice to join the CRCDE reflects upon the intersectionality of my interests in developmental
psychology, linguistics, and public health. It has sparked more focused interests and subsequently
influenced my course decisions, including classes in social psychology and language acquisition. It
also incorporates my passion for public policy as well as, particularly with the colloquium speakers, I
am able to see how their research can affect future policies (e.g. teaching approaches for bilingual
speakers in Head Start and elementary education). Before college, I did lab internships at a
biopharmaceutical company, and while I enjoyed the work environment and found the material
interesting, it wasnt a field I could see myself working in for an extended amount of time. In working
at the CRCDE, I am reassured that I really enjoy the research setting and process. I am still debating
as to whether I would greater enjoy clinical work or research, but this provides me a good starting
point in both pinpointing my goals and broadening my knowledge and interests.

What are your responsibilities and learning objectives for your internship? Include what you hope to
gain from this experience.

I spend most days coding the onsets and offsets of baby vocalizations, but we are currently moving
into the beginnings of analysis. Upon finishing the encoding of vocalizations, I will then be trained to
code the childs object exploration. I also attend weekly departmental and group meetings with the
lead researcher (Catherin Tamis-LeMonda). These allow for me to grasp the ultimate goal of our
research and also exposes me to other fields of psychological research, from colloquium speakers
from around the country and CRCDEs math-, spatial-, and executive function-focused groups. I am
learning many general professional skills with regards to a workplace, learning how to use popular
psychology analysis programs, and hope to hone in on my greater interests in the field.

How would you benefit financially from receiving this grant? Describe, with specific examples, how it
would help meet your needs.

Attending NYU and living in the city are, as Im sure you know, very expensive. My internships at
CRCDE allows me to work on something I am very passionate about but disallows me the time to
work (for money) as much as I would like to during the week. Additionally, my family is currently
undergoing a large transition where my mom is moving to China to be with my dad while my
grandparents, who are in far less than optimal health and do not speak English, are being left in
Maryland. This is an obviously expensive move but is compounded largely by the issue of having to
afford for the caretaking of my grandparents (as only my immediate family lives in America).
