GIVEN DATA:

No of Span = 5

Breadth of beam = 12

c/c spacing of Beam = 16

Dead load (Excluding self weight) = 10 psf

Live load = 60 psf

Fc = 4000 psi , fy = 60000 psi , clear concrete cover = 0.75

A)

Find the slab thickness =??????

ACI code criteria for minimum thickness for supporting partitions ( ref. Table 9.5a)

As slab is one end continuous so use h = l/24

H = 15*12/24
= 7.5

b)

Self weight of slab = *b*h

Consider a 12 wide segment so b= 12

= 150*7.5/12

= 93.75 psf

Total dead load = 93.75 + 10 = 103.75 psf

Ultimate or fractured load = 1.2 D.L + 1.6 L.L

= 1.2(103.75) + 1.6 (60)

= 220.5 psf

By designing a 12 wide segment the loading is 220.5 lb/feet

Check D.L/L.L = 1-3

103.75/60 = 1.72<3 O.K

Maximum ultimate moment = Mu = Wu*ln2/8

= 220.5*15 2/8

= 6201.56 lb-f

= 6.20 kip-f

Mu using ACI Moment Co-efficient

*All interior span are same to the first interior span

End Span:

Exterior Support = -Mu = Wu*ln2/24 = 220.5*152/24 = 2.067 kip-f

Mid Span = +Mu = Wu*ln 2/14 = 220.5*152/14 = 3.54 kip-f

Interior Support = -Mu = Wu*ln2/10 = 220.5*152/10 = 4.96 kip-f

Interior Span:

Interior Support = -Mu = Wu*ln2/11 = 220.5*152/11 = 4.50 kip-f

Mid Span = +Mu = Wu*ln 2/16 = 220.5*152/16 = 3.10 kip-f

Maximum moment is 4.96 kip-f

Effective depth of Slab = H cover (half dia of #5 assumed bar )

= 7.5 0.75 0.625/2

= 6.43
c)

Using the ACI moment co-efficient to determine Mu, design the slab for flexural reinforcement at all
locations and check ACI recommendation.

Main steel selection and spacing:

Maximum spacing for main reinforcement = 3h or 18 (lesser is selected)

Smax = 3*7.5 = 22.5 so maximum spacing is 18

Note:

ACI recommend that in the positive moment areas provide spacing equal to half of the maximum
spacing to allow the alternate bars to be terminated.

So maximum spacing in the positive moment areas is = 18/2 = 9 to allow bar cut-off

k = Mu/*b*d2 , from table , As = *b*d

Sketch For Main Reinforcement:

d) Determine the temperature and shrinkage reinforcement

For 60-grade steel bar the temperature and shrinkage steel by the ACI code

Minimum required As = 0.0018*b*h

= 0.0018*12*7.5

= 0.162 in 2 per feet

Maximum spacing for temperature and shrinkage steel

= 5h or 18 (lesser is selected)

Maximum spacing = 5*7.5= 37.5>18

So maximum spacing is 18

Use #3 @ 8 c/c As = 0.16 in2

Assume a tension controlled section (i.e the steel reaches its yield stress so = 0.90)

Mu = *Mn = *b*d2*k

K = Mu/*b*d2

K = 4.96*12/(0.9*12*6.432)

K = 0.133296 from table = 0.0023 and it is tension controlled section so

As = *b*d

As = 0.0023*12*6.43

As = 0.177 in2 > 0.16 in2 so o.k

So temperature & shrinkage steel spacing is

Use #3 @ 8 c/c As = 0.16 in2

Main & Temp. Steel:

E) Using ACI Shear co-efficient, check the slab for shear

Shears are determined using the ACI shear equation

End Span:

Face of first interior support

Vu = 1.15Wu*ln/2

= 1.15*220.5*15/2

= 1.90 kip

All other Support

Vu = Wu*ln/2

= 220.5*15/2

= 1.65 kip

Shear reinforcement is not required if the practical shear strength of section ( i.e Vn = Vc ) is greater
than the shear force due to factured load (i.e V u) that is

Vn = Vc > Vu

Vn = 2***(fc)0.5*bw*d

= 2*0.9*1*(4000)0.5*12*6.43

= 7.32 kip

Vu maximum from ACI equations

Vu = 1.90 kip

7.32 kip > 1.90 kip

So the thickness is ok and no shear reinforcement is required.
