ASSURE Model 10th grade biology lesson on meiosis 1

Analyze the Learner:

W
ho are the learners?
o 1 0th grade students.
W
hat are their skill levels?
o The students have an understanding of a similar process mitosis. This should give them a basic
understanding of the phases of the process.
What are their learning styles?
o Most of the students enjoy learning by video and then getting hands on with the material.

State Objectives:
What do you want the learners to gain knowledge of?
o The learners must understand the process of meiosis 1 and how it differs from mitosis.
What are the specific learner outcomes?
o The learning outcomes are:
The student understands meiosis results in non-identical cells.
Understand that there are two phases of meiosis.
Understand what homologous pairs are.
Understand crossing over.
Understand the results of meiosis 1.

Select Methods, Media, and Materials:

What methods of instruction will you use?
o I will use the lecture method, demonstration method, and practical exercise method.
Which media are appropriate?
o I will use the Khan Academy video on meiosis to start the lesson. This is an appropriate
media for everyone and is very good for learning.
W hich materials will you need?
o I will need microscopes and slides, a computer and projector, a meiosis 1 hand out, and an
interactive white board.
Require Learner Participation:
What will the learners be required to do?
o The learners must participate in the lecture portion when I will be asking questions. They will
complete a worksheet as a group. The will identify phases of mitosis and meiosis under a
microscope.
H ow will the learners engage in participatory learning?

o The learner will answer questions as I ask them. They will also come to the front of the class
and draw examples on the interactive white board. Then they will use my help and the help of
each other to identify phases under the microscope.

Evaluate and Revise:

Did the lesson meet the objectives?
o The lesson was able to meet the objectives with student participation
How will you evaluate content and technologies used?
o I will administer a quiz where they will be required to answer questions from the video and
lecture and identify diagrams of the phases. I will also set up a microscope and have them
identify the phase being pointed at.
H ow will you revise and improve?

o I will talk to the students and see if they enjoyed the lesson plan and ask them what they
would like me to keep or change. I will evaluate the effectiveness based on the grades from the
quizzes. I will change and adjust based on the students needs, likes, and grades.
