medallist Torah Brights face in an Emoji
icon, it would have to be one with a huge
megawatt smile. Her wide grin is quite
simply infectious and, when OK! sat
down with the talented snowboarder,
we couldnt help but spend our entire chat
smiling right back.
At just 28, the vibrant, unstoppable pro
athlete has already experienced a roller-
coaster of emotions including a public
divorce in 2013 from husband of three years
Jake Welch, and the loss of her close friend,
Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke all
while training to take on the best in the world
and win even more Olympic medals.
She also found the time to compete for
the 2014 Dancing with the Stars mirrorball

What made you want to write It Takes
Courage?
Well, its funny because I had no urge to
write abook. I was approached to do it and
I scoffed at the idea. I thought, People write
books when theyre
done; Im 27 and Im not
done. But my family and
friends just kind of said,
Oh, you know, think
about it. Its kind of good
timing, youre in a great
place; you do have a great
story to tell, why not? Its not
all fluff; it talks about some hard
times and I think thats important,
too. You know, when life gives you
lemons, you make beef stew.
Beef stew?
Yeah, beef stew! You know, you make
it something totally different. Youve
got to acknowledge it and make it how
you want it.
Were there any parts of your life that
were off-limits in the book?
Im an oversharer, I have to say. But no,

know, whichever way you look at it my
divorce. You know, some things are best kept
to yourself and not meant to be shared, but
Ireally did want to share an honest account
of that time because I look back at it now
and I say that it was my greatest triumph,
that period of life.
Do you mean the period of life during
your marriage or going through
the divorce?
I want to say post Vancouver Olympics
[February 2010] til now.

No, theres nothing written in there that

juicy! Im not the only one whos survived
adivorce. Everybodys story is different,
but yeah, of course there were tough times.
I talk about it in the book; I didnt get out of

surrendered to my emotions and
acknowledged them, but I didnt let myself
lull there for too long. Ihad my whole
sporting, seasoning career to kind of push
on to and, no matter how hard it was,
Ipushed on through and I did what I had
to do. I have amazing family and friends
who would stay up talking to me.

Was it hard to relive it all? You
no doubt had to be quite specific
in the book
No, not at all. I look back at that
time now and its such a blessing
and a joy, to be honest, because
I saw so much growth and
understanding in myself that Ive
been able to help a lot of other
people as well.
After everything youve been through,
would you get married again? Do you still
believe in marriage?
I do, I do. However, I am so far from that.
You can never put a timeframe on anything
like that. Im definitely hopeful for the future,
that I will find a wonderful man to spend
the rest of my life with and have beautiful
babies with. But, you know, whenever that
happens Im OK. Im not really looking.

Matt Cooper, but
when it comes to the
35-year-old buff star,
all our morals fly out the window.
Yes, we know hes the doting dad of two
daughters Indie, five, and Starr, two and
a loving husband to wife Dallas, 33, but we
just cant help ourselves from swooning
when were in his presence! And were not
the only ones. Judge Kym Johnson had a field
day flattering Matt during the last season of
Dancing with the Stars, in which he took out
fifth place. Not that the thrice-crowned Sexiest
Man in League had any qualms about the
praise. More surprisingly, nor did Dallas! Shes
used to it; we both just laugh it off, Matt says of
his very understanding wife of five years.
There have been times when weve been out

You live with three beautiful ladies.
Do you feel outnumbered at times?
I do, and Ive been saying that for a while.
I need another boy in the house, even if
its a dog, just to manly up the house.
When you were doing DWTS, were your
girls happy to have dancing, as opposed to
footy games, around them for a change?
My girls are very girlie girls they like to sing
and dance. Whenever I had a footy game on,
theyd prefer to stay in the crche and play
rather than watch me on the field with the
team. But with Dancing with the Stars they
were right into it. Wed record it and theyd
watch it over and over.

besotted he is with his daughters. Although
Matt is planning to spend most of this year
preparing for his first mixed martial arts
cage fighting gig with hopes of becoming
a professional fighter in the future! at
home, hes a complete softie. I tell my girls
that they arent allowed into our bed, but when
they come in, I secretly love it because I like to
cuddle them, he shares.
Do you think you and Dallas will try for
a boy?
Id say that were leaning towards it, and fingers
crossed I get a boy, because if I had three girls
that would be really tough. Id definitely have
to go and buy a few male dogs then. Girls, they
never shut up, they are very loud and all they
do is talk. Im the type of person who likes a bit
of quiet time.
Do you have a man cave?
I do my garage, where I spend quite a lot
of time. Ive got a theatre room, which I can
escape into until the girls come barging in and
want to put on their movies. I can tell you that
Im up-to-date with all the kids movies!
Your oldest daughter, Indie, whos five, is
off to school next year how do you feel
about that milestone?
Its pretty scary for me I dont want
to see my little girl go to school! But shes
well ready; shes pretty smart.
Are you nervous about your girls growing
up to be young women? Have you
thought about when they start to bring
boys home in a few years?
Of course Im nervous! Ive already got the
shotgun ready to go [laughs]. No, they are two
very cute kids and I think they are going to
grow up to be good-looking girls. I know what
boys think at those teenage ages because Ive

Are you a strict dad?
There are lots of rules, but they all get
broken. The youngest one, especially, still
sleeps in our bed, which is a habit were

sleepover. I enjoy it. We cuddle each other
all night, and for some reason both girls tend
to go over to my side and take up all of my
room on the bed because its not like Im
massive and need any more than 30cm of

dinner and a movie, but its nice to relive the
days when we had no kids.
How long have you and
Dallas been together?
About 14 years. We were just out of school
when we met. We actually met at
anightclub I was only 21 and she was BODY
