This Weeks Speaker: Ellie Blackwood By doing so, we aim to normalise food growing as an ex-
pected feature of healthy urban landscapes.
Topic: 3000 Acres
Our Story
3000acres was born out of a seemingly simple question:
How can we improve access to healthy and fresh foods
in urban environments?
Through an innovative collaboration with town planners,
lawyers, residential developers and web-based develop-
ers, our solution to this issue of urban food insecurity was
not to provide food to people, but to instead unlock pock-
ets of vacant land to enable people to grow food for them-
selves. Within the city of Melbourne there is such a vast
amount of underutilized space ranging from tiny verges
on street corners, to vacant car parks, to large scale emp-
ty lots awaiting development. By considering the princi-
ples of sustainable urban design we began to recognize
the potential of the vacant concrete lot as an un-tapped
opportunity to be transformed into vibrant and productive
open spaces.
There strategy is summarised in this slide:
3000acres is co-managed by Ellie Blackwood and Pippa
French, and supported through the help of a team of en-
gaged and committed volunteers.
Ellie Blackwood is a project and key relationships manag-
er at 3000acres. She has worked with the organisation
since 2014 across a number of roles, including advocacy,
volunteer coordination, site management and community
development. Ellie has a Masters in Environmental Poli-
tics with an applied research focus on the role of policy in
creating equitable and sustainable food systems.
Pippa French is a Botanist and Horticulturist with a desire
to make our cities happier and more resilient through The slides on the next page show how food production is
growing food. She has worked at 3000acres since 2014 being forced out of the Melbourne metropolitan area.
and in that time has managed numerous projects, relish- 3000acres was a key helper in assisting Heather and her
ing the diversity of the work. Pippa also works at the City collaborators set up the St Stephens Community Garden.
of Yarra as an Urban Agriculture Facilitator.

This is their story:
Our Vision
At 3000acres, we want to see more people, growing more
food, in more places.
Since 2014 we have been working to break down the bar-
riers to urban food growing by improving
the enabling cultural and regulatory environment,
by influencing the public and private sector to rethink va-
cant land use, and by empowering community groups
with the knowledge and skills they need to make it hap-
pen.

MARBLE CAVES

Las Cuevas de Mrmol (The

Marble Caves) sit in the mid-
dle of General Carrera Lake,
which lies between Chile
and Argentina. The tunnels
and caves are only reacha-
ble by boat. The swooping
arches have been formed by
more than 6,000 years of
water lapping against the
rock, and the waters change
colour depending on the
time of year.
