SITUTATION

Panpacific University North Philippines (PUNP) is one of the

biggest university located in pangasinan. The institution offers

different courses which includes four branch of engineering, namely

Civil, Computer, Electrical, and Electronics and Communications

Engineering.

Sadly, the passing rate of civil engineering for the past years

is significantly dropping. Thus, the researcher decided to conduct an

action research to determine if having a poor reading and problem

analysis comprehension skill is one of the factors that affects the

performance of the students.

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

Good reading comprehension comes only with practice. The basic

aspects of reading, such as word recognition, phonetics and fluency,

can be mastered in just a few years. However, throughout this process

reading comprehension must be emphasized. Students may be able to

eloquently repeat the words that they see on a page all day, but

without reading comprehension skills, they're unable to fully

understand the content, predict what will happen next, recognize

characters, gain insight or understanding to build upon, or relate

what they're reading to their own life's experience.

Students frequently enter college without understanding how

necessary good reading comprehension skills are for academic success.

Those who grasp the information they read in textbooks earn better

1
grades and experience far less stress than those who struggle to fully

understand what they're reading.

Problem analysis is used to find the cause of a problem. It

points to the relevant information and leads to the possible equation.

Problem analysis therefore involves identifying the overriding problem

and establishing the causes and effects related to that problem. A key

element of this analysis will ensure that root causes are identified

and subsequently addressed in the project design. Projects that only

address the effects of the problem, and not its underlying causes, are

unlikely to produce sustainable benefits.

On this action research, the researcher aimed to measure the

level of reading and problem analysis comprehension skill of the civil

engineering students of PUNP. As well as to formulate a recommendation

to answer the said problem.

The researchers used questionnaire as the main tool for obtaining

the data from the respondents. The questionnaire distributed was

composed of two parts, namely: The assessment on the level of reading

comprehensive skill and the assessment of the level of problem

analysis comprehensive skill of PUNP Civil Engineering Students.

(Please refer to Appendices for the Questionnaire)

2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What is the level of reading comprehension of PUNP civil

engineering students?

2. What is the level of problem analysis comprehension of PUNP civil

engineering students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between reading and problem

analysis comprehension skill?

4. What proposed measures can be applied to satisfy the underlying

arguments?

GENERATION OF ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION

This action research offers alternative solutions to the

following issues:

1. Student issues on their reading comprehensions.

2. Asses the problem analysis proficiency of PUNP Civil Engineering

Students.

Research Design and Methodology

This study used a descriptive and explanatory methods since the

data will be gathered through the administration of questionnaires as

the main instrument in seeking answers to the problems of the study.

This will include quantitative and qualitative approach of

research. Quantitative approach will be used to identify and present

data relative to the criteria of materials to be used in the proposed

system. Qualitative approach will also be used to present the benefits

of the proposed system to the community and to the environment as well.

Quantitative approach will be used to present the data gathered

through survey and the technical analysis of the proposed system.

Data Gathering Tool

The researchers will use a survey-questionnaire as the main data

gathering tool. The questionnaire will be drafted and submitted to the

research adviser for suggestions and comments. The final copy will be

written after taking into consideration the corrections and

suggestions for improvement. The questionnaire will then be subjected

for validation by a competent evaluator.

Population and Locale of the Study

Sixty Three (63) Civil Engineering students of Panpacific

University North Philippines shall be randomly selected as respondents

of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The questionnaire shall be distributed and administered

personally by the researchers to the randomly selected respondents to

explain the objectives of the survey. This will also enable the

researchers to entertain queries from the respondents.

The questionnaire shall be gathered, tabulated and analyzed by

the proponents.

Transmittal letters shall be prepared by the proponents and shall

be distributed personally to seek approval to conduct personal

interview with the resource persons. One of the proponents shall serve

as the transcriptionist of the whole interview process then a summary

of the information shall be prepared.

7
Treatment of Data

The gathered data was then presented in tabular-form to

interpret the results. Matrix tables were made to organize,

summarize, and analyze the data gathered. The following

statistical tools were used in the analysis of data:

1. The responses to questions in the given variables were

scaled using the four-point-scale and given weight

as follows:

Weight Descriptive Equivalent Range

4 Excellent 3.25-4.00
3 Good 2.50-3.24
2 Fair 1.75-2.49
1 Poor 1.00-1.74

Table 1: Four-Point Scale

2. The process of finding the Average Weighted Mean,

which is referred to as central tendency was used.

Both variables was then exposed to this method. The

formula is given below:

=1( )
=

Where:

= Weighted Mean

= Weights

8
= Values

= Population

3. Chi-Square Test

Both data sets were then subjected to Chi-Square

Test to find if there is a significant relationship

between both variables.

Null Hypotheses:

There is no significant relationship between reading

comprehensive skill and problem analysis comprehension.
