This Is What Happens When You

One Month

Its not news that soda is bad for us. But it is jarring to witness the physical effects drinking too much of it has on
our waistlines.

George Prior, 50, has guinea-pigged his body to do just that.

Following in the body-hacking footsteps of Morgan Spurlock the Super Size Me filmmaker who in 2004 ate
three McDonalds meals for 30 days straight Prior began guzzling down ten 12-ounce cans of Coca Cola daily for
one month to see how the whopping dose of added sugar would affect his healthy physique. He documented it all
on his website, 10 Cokes A Day.

The before and after pictures say it all:

I got the idea because I read that Jude Law drank 10 Cokes a day to gain weight for his Dom Hemingway role,
and I was joking with one of my brothers that that was probably a diet for some people, Prior tells Yahoo Health.
But then we realized that amount of sugar isnt that far from the norm for many Americans, so then I got really
curious to see what would happen to me if I really drank ten Cokes, and it sounded like a fun experiment.

On day one, Prior reported in the video, Ive just gotten back from the doctor where Ive had a complete physical.
Im 50 years old and in good health.

The Los Angeleno then began consuming 10 cans of Coke per day. Thats an additional 1,400 calories and 390
grams of sugar daily.

On day nine, Prior woke up weighing 176 pounds, eight pounds heavier than when he started. Ive gained 2
pounds since yesterday, Prior reported. I dont feel good.

By day 15, Priors body fat had jumped from 8 to 14 percent.

And after the full 30 days, he had gained 23 pounds. I feel heavier, I cant wear my long pants to work anymore,
said Prior in the video. My clothes all fit tightly and I cant bend over easily.

Ten cans of soda seems excessive, but Prior was consuming just twice the amount of added sugar that the
average American eats daily. According to the USDA, Americans eat 156 pounds of added sugar every year, which
breaks down to 194 grams per day. During his challenge, Prior drank 390 grams of added sugar daily.

The Recommended Daily Allowance of sugar for men is 36 grams, and 24 grams for women.

"Most people know that soda is not good for them, but for some reason, they think the risk of excess sugar
consumption is less than that of having too much saturated and trans fat, sodium or calories," Kristin Kirkpatrick,
R.D, wellness manager at the Cleveland Clinic, told Yahoo Health. Perhaps its sugars lack of sodium or fat that
makes it the lesser of several evils, or perhaps people are simply of the mind frame that what they dont know
wont hurt them.

Sugar not only makes us pack on pounds, but it can also damage your heart, is linked to cancer, is as toxic to
your liver as too much alcohol and can even make your brain age quicker and accelerate memory loss.

What did Prior do on Day 31, when the challenge ended? He threw away his unused cans of Coke. If I have to
drink another Coke in 1,000 years it would be one Coke too soon, he said in the video.

While the feeling of constant fullness and the basic inconvenience of drinking all that soda were not enjoyable,
Prior tells Yahoo Health the worst actual physical discomfort was in the two days after I stopped drinking the
Cokes, which is when he felt nauseated and tired and without appetite.

But Kirkpatrick cautions that while many of us strive to avoid the normal sugary culprits soda joins a long list
with candy, cookies, cake, etc. we are often duped by secret sugar-packed foods. Examples include tomato
sauce, fat-free dressing, tonic water, marinades, crackers and even bread, she says.

...first of all - it appears he started drinking coke and stopped working out or being active - ANYONE WILL GAIN

WEIGHT THAT WAY! you CAN have sugar - but you need to burn it off! i have celiac disease and water is so

contaminated that it makes me physically ill - so i drink pepsi most of the day (i can drink some tea and organic

juices - but some of the juices are packed with sugar too) - and i haven't gained weight because I BURN IT OFF! i

stay active between work - house work and yard work - and working out...recently had my blood work done (even

tho i fasted - i had a can of pepsi three hours prior to my appointment) and my sugar came back 87!!! i'm sure if i

wasn't active - i'd gain a ton of weight too and my sugar would be a lot higher!! ... Keep reading

i have a story that even coke knows but won't admit...it goes back to the 50's. My aunt drank a CASE of coke a

day (more on a good day w/whiskey, my favorite at 6yr old) any way, the delivery truck came to her house. when

she passed at 76 yrs old she had 24 cases in her garage (the min limit at all times) anyway, she went to coke hq

and want to advertise for them. THEY told her no, they didn't want anyone to know that somebody could get

addicted to coke.... ... Keep reading

I've done "Joke" before and after pictures where I stick my gut out with a little poor posture added in, then for

the after picture( Which I take immediately after) I suck in my gut ,add in some good posture, and it looks like I

just did a 30 day diet/workout program! Pictures don& #39;t always show the truth.I think 10 donuts or pie or cake

or candy bars a day would be worse! The key here is moderation in all things! ... Keep reading

I just want to say I agree with him about the weight gain from drinking the soda. I am 51 years old and a female. 8

years ago , I weighted 135 lbs. I worked from 7pm to 7 am in a printing plant , 7 days in a 2 week span. I loved my

job. It was hot in the plant , so I drank Mt. Dew, 1 an hour, for 12 hours, go home and drink 2 more before i would

go to sleep, then get up and do it all over again. I am now 180lbs., don't drink water, and still drink Mt. Dew from

the time I get up till the time I go to bed. 2 years ago I had drank the coconut water and I loved it, and no Mt. Dew.

But the store that I got it from, could not keep it in stock, and they were the only store that I could find it .Now

the store has been sold and I am back on the Mt. Dew. I don't drink as much as I did 8 years ago, but I can't get

this weight off. I just can't get myself to do exercise, except walking my dog 4 time a day, about 15 minutes to 30

minutes each time. So I just wanted to say , Good Luck to George Prior at losing the weight. Let me know what

you are going to do to lose it. ... Keep reading

Not everyone gains weight from drinking sodas. I drank at least 6 per day for around 7 years. Did it affect my

weight? Not really, but it did affect my health. The health affects have been pretty dramatic from eye sight

problems, kidney problems, heart problems, severe diabetes. I am not fat, 48 years old, actively participate in Tae

Kwon Do. Dew the right thing and ditch Mt. Dew (and all other sodas) as they are just not good for your body. It's

been about 2 months since I ditched the Dew and I feel good, still have a ways to go, but I am recovering. I don't

need to see the results of a study now to know sodas are just plain bad...two doctors telling me they were

surprised I did not die was enough to convince me. ... Keep reading

I was injured on the job ten years ago...in a coma for a month and a half, hospitalized for seven months. Then I

was moved to a Physical Therapy Rehab Hospital. I hadn't had a soft drink since the day before I was injured, but

you could get soft drinks in their cafeteria.

My sister came to visit on my third day there...walks in and looks at me...then says "You're drinking pop!"

I said "You can get Mr Pibb at each meal!...How did you know I've been drinking pop?"

She said "You've gained weight in your face."

Soft drinks have always been my downfall. ... Keep reading

Did we really need another idiot binge feeding himself to try and prove that abusing quantities is unhealthy? It's

not the soda so much that hurt him it's the excess, same with Spurlock. When you take things to an extreme you'll

get an extreme response. Let's get all the information, did he stop exercising completely for this month as well?

Because his arms sure lost a lot of tone. He let his hair and beard grow out, I'd say it's likely he just said I'm

gonna be unhealthy for a month to help push my point. How many people really drink 10 cokes a day EVERY day

for a month? I could understand the rare day when you have a lot to drink but but 300 cans in a month? ... Keep

My husband use to drink tons of coke for years till one day he started slurring his words and was shaking real

bad. I told him to go to the hospital but he wouldn't go. The next day I get a phone call from his work, they told me

my husband was taken to the hospital. The doctor said he has diabetes and that his sugars was up 690

something. I knew he was drinking a lot of coke at home but he would also bring home a big bag of empty coke

cans every Friday. Come to find out he was drinking about 10 or more cokes a day plus eating candy. It was really

scary to see him like that. We thought he had a stroke. He is much better now. ... Keep reading

BLLSHT! He's doing the exact same thing that workout infomercials and ads do to make his body look different.

Lighting, posture, and positioning. He has the exact same body in both images but in one he is photographed with

lighting that provides a light of highlight and shadow, which accentuates the muscles. And I bet he was probably

doing pushups just before the pic was taken to get his muscles pumped.

In the picture in the right the lighting is such that there are barely any shadows, and he's standing at a 3/4 angle

and sticking his stomach out on purpose. ... Keep reading

This guy is such an idiot, I remember when another fitness man tried to do the McDonalds test. The difference

was he kept working out every day and did not sit around. With in the first two weeks he had lost over 10lbs and

had to stop and start back on his high protein diet. He was burning off more calories than he could eat and as we

all know if you work out 12,000 calories is not much if you are working most of it off. ... Keep reading
