Criterion D

Strand 1: Evaluate the quality of the product against the Product Criteria
1. Evaluation of Product
Overall, I achieved all of the criteria that I had set for each part of my goal. What follows is a brief
evaluation of my performance in each part. Please refer to Extract 5 for a more comprehensive
analysis of the quality of my product against the stated criteria.

Part 1: Research
I consulted both primary and secondary sources to complete the research stage. I think I have
looked in depth into the problem and the relationship between malnutrition, obesity and the Hong
Kong Lifestyles. Also, when researching, the large variety of sources allow the readers to
understand what this idea means in different perspectives. Throughout the research, I have asked
my PP supervisor about his opinions on my continued progress. Ultimately, I think that I have
achieved my goal of finding sufficient research and I finished each requirement in my action plan
on time.

Part 2: Designing
I investigated various magazine samples and manipulated some of the special designs into mine. I
also considered the affordances and drawbacks of the software when designing. Working on the
designing software is the most difficult times because the software is somehow hard to control. I
have to work on the product sometimes in my free time such as the school bus ride from school
back home. Also, when designing the product, there were a few errors that the information is not
able to fit all in, which I have to see which type of information can be deleted and there will be
more spaces for the useful information to be seen in a bigger font.

Part 3: Producing
I discovered that it would have been much easier if I print the magazine in paper, but that paper
doesnt make a formal magazine and so I have to use gloss text paper for the paper texture. This
made the product looks more professional and informative, which convinces the audience that it is
very useful and attractive.

I used the criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of my product in achieving the goal. My product has
achieved half of the product criteria as I change some of the requirements in the criteria after I
changed the design. I think I could improve this by creating a survey to evaluate my audiences
level of understanding regarding basic concepts of Hong Kong diet issues.

Strand 2: Reflect how this has extended you knowledge of your topic and Global Context
My personal project has extended my understanding of Globalisation and Sustainability, as I
realised that we need to explore new concepts which focus on the surroundings and issues existing
around the world, which is my worst ability. For example, I dont really know that malnutrition can
be defined as obesity too. After I have done my research, I discovered the connection between Hong
Kong Lifestyles and diets in Hong Kong. Therefore, I think I understood more.

This research has helped me to further my understand of Globalisation and Sustainability by

teaching me different perspectives can change the fact of an issue. For example, most people
say malnutrition is lack of nutrition in body, and the person is very skinny. However, the
person can be very fat too. The imbalanced diet leads to imbalance proportion of nutrients in
body such as fat, which is not considered as a nutrient at all.
Regarding my research question and goal, I understood that we cannot assume something after a
fact is proved. Rumours can change the perspectives of one when he or she does not know anything
about an idea. Therefore, after these research, I realise most of the rumours of diet and food are not
true. This helped me to correct my understanding and it is very helpful to my future.

Strand 3: Reflect upon development as an IB learner

As an IB learner, I felt that areas of the learner profiles built over the MYP program have been
applied to the project. I managed to further explore concepts across a range of disciplines by
investigating the tend-to-be ideas influences ones perspective. However, this also made me realise
that I lack in being objective. For example, I always thought that people will understand the concept
or an idea like I do as always, but I forgot the fact that everyone has a different understanding when
looking at the same things.

Also, as an IB learner, I made good use of Transfer and Communication skills learned before to
complete the project. For example, I communicated with my supervisor and received comments
from my peers and family about their perspective towards my investigation. And being an inquirer, I
used my conceptual understanding of the topic to question the current concept of diets and
malnutrition theories, understanding about how this matters with psychological issues.

The entire PP project is an overall reflection for my MYP performance and it allowed me to reflect
my weaknesses and improve them.
