Team Multiplication Practice

Lauren Hawthorne
EDU 220-1005

I. Describe the Class

This lesson is for a fourth grade class with 27 students. There are 2 ELL and 1
student with dyslexia.

II. Subject/Skill:
Mathematics: Multiplying two-digit numbers by a single digit number.

III. Objective(s)
In teams of 4 or 5, students will correctly solve multiplication problems, in
which a two-digit number is multiplied by a single digit number.

IV. Procedures: For a Direct Instruction Lesson

1. The objective of this lesson is to correctly solve 2 digit by 1 digit

multiplication problems. Ask question: Who remembers learning their
multiplication tables? To review, ask single digit multiplication
problems. Wait before calling on students to answer, so they have time to
think. Ask just a few to help students recall the information. Students
should know single digit multiplication before learning to multiply 2 digit
numbers by a single digit number.
2. Teacher will demonstrate solving sample problems on the board for
students to see. Students should be practicing along on their own paper in
front of them. Ask students to give some answers to check for
understanding. Allow time for questions and extra practice if needed.
3. Using the Teams-Games-Tournaments (TGT) cooperative learning
strategy. In small teams of 4-5 students, practice the multiplication
problems in a game format using individual whiteboards. Problems are
said aloud and written on the board in the front for all students to see.
Students solve and write their answers on their individual whiteboards.
Teams will hold up their white boards to show their answers when
everyone is finished. Teams with the correct answers will receive points.
Teacher will keep track of points on the whiteboard. After each problem,
teacher will demonstrate solving to help students understand how to reach
the correct answer.
4. Students will complete a fill in multiplication practice worksheet at home
to check for understanding. Teacher will assess work when turned in the
next day to determine if students understand the material.

V. Materials
Small, individual white boards (1 per team/table)
Dry erase markers (1 per team/table)
Whiteboard erasers (1 per team/table)
Fill in multiplication practice worksheet (1 per student)
VI. Grouping Structures
VII. Students will work in groups of 4-5 with the students that are sitting at their
tables.

VIII. Modifications
Multiplication problems will be read aloud in addition to being written on the
board in large font for ELL students and the student with dyslexia. Give
plenty of time for all students to solve the problems.

IX. Assessment
Assessing student progress/culminating or closing activity: Review prior
material (single digit multiplication) and new material (multiplying two digits
by one digit) at the end of the lesson. Ask a few more sample questions for
students to answer aloud. Allow time for questions. Tell students about the
next math lesson and its connection to this one. Next week we will be
learning how to multiply 2 two-digit numbers. Tell the students that their
graded worksheets will be given back to them so they can ask questions and
review as a class.
Distributed Practice and Review: Students will complete the fill in
multiplication worksheet for practice at home. It will be returned for grading
the following day.
