Lesson 2: Solve word problems involving the total value of a group of coins.

Content Knowledge - Objective:

Students will be able to solve problems involving coins and bills. Lesson 2 builds upon students
finding the total value of a group of coins in the context of simple addition and subtraction
word problem types with the results unknown.

Groups:
Students will be divided into 4 groups based on their STAR Math Assessment.

Assessments:
Informal: Teacher will use an informal checklist as student work in groups.
Formal: Students will take an online quiz about the coins learned and their value.
Teacher will assess students using a 4-point rubric. Student will need to receive a 3 out
of 4 to reach mastery level.

Introduction/Engagement:
Students will be able to explore and interact with coins at their tables. Students will work in
pairs to practice identifying different coins and their values.

Lesson: (developmental procedures)

Model: Teacher will hold up each coin and have students name each coin and the value. Teacher
will go over each coin with the coins name and value. (Penny: 1 cent, Nickel: 5 cents, dime: 10
cents, quarters: 25 cents). Remind students to use the RDW process when solving word
problems with money. Emphasize the importance of rereading and adjusting.

Part 1: Solve a put together with total unknown problem.

Ignacio has 3 dimes and 2 nickels in one pocket and 1 quarter and 7 pennies in another pocket.
How much money is in Ignacios pockets?

Teacher will go over step by step how to solve the problem using RDW. Encourage students to
follow all the steps in order to avoid mistakes.

Guided: Teacher will take out various coins (Examples: 2 dimes and 3 pennies. 3 quarters and
2 pennies...etc.). Students will turn and talk about the total value of each set and how they
know? Students will work in pairs to practice counting mixed groups with the following
amounts:Repeat the process with the following put together with result unknown problem.

Tamika has 12 pennies and 2 quarters in her new piggy bank. She puts in 4 nickels, 1 dime, and 4
more pennies. How much money does Tamika have in her piggy bank although?

Independent: Students will break up into their math groups to continue to practice identify
the values of coin(s).
