Organisers of EarthDance Cebu 2010! cordially invite you and your organisation to this
exciting event which will bring together people and organisations together from all over the
Visayas and Mindanao to celebrate the Earth, and crystallize the movement toward
Environmentally Sustainable Development in our region.
The event will see the launching of a new Alliance of Environmental NGOs as well as the
launching of the Green Light Guide to Maharlika~Philippines.
EarthDance Festival has been celebrated in Manila in 2008 and 2009 and an EarthDance Festival is
being organized there again this year.
EarthDance Cebu 2010! Sept 18-19, Family Park, Talamaban, Cebu City of Light
The intention of EarthDance Cebu 2010! is to bring people together to celebrate and raise awareness
about the Environment and Sustainable Development here in Cebu.
Location
EarthDance Cebu 2010! will take place Sep 18-19 at Family Park in Talamban, Cebu City.
Local musicians
The event will bring together a range of local musicians to give live performances. Music genres
include reggae, world music and traditional Filipino tribal music.
Environmental groups
Stalls will be available free of charge (if groups bring their own tables, chairs and sunshades,
otherwise they will be available for hire). A number of environmental groups will be exhibiting their
environmental projects in the region. We are also inviting DENR to participate amongst other
government agencies and officials.
Some of the issues we would like to highlight include protecting native habitat and species, tree-
planting and restoring native habitat, protecting beaches from illegal sand extraction, creating
marine sanctuaries and working toward sustainable fishing.
Also we will promote sustainable design and renewable energy in new housing developments in
Cebu and the Visayas region, as well as best practice in waste management and recycling.
Ecotourism
We are inviting ecotourism businesses to also showcase tours they are offering as well as teach
about the meaning of ‘ecotourism’.
Their presence will be complemented by the attendance of the Department of Tourism, and the
National Ecotourism Development Council (NEDC), as well as related organizations such as the
Mountaineers Club of Cebu.
Sustainable Development
Energy
We are inviting companies who specialize in solar energy equipment and wind energy systems, as
well as mini-hydro, methane digestors etc to attend.
Energy-efficient buildings
Also companies and architects specializing in energy-efficient building design including insulation,
solar windows and new materials will be invited. There can also be demonstrations of mud brick
design, and systems to capture rainwater from the roof.
Recycling
We will highlight the benefits of recycling and invite officials from various Solid Waste Management
plants to exhibit the latest waste management systems. We will invite people from recycling depots
so people can learn how to recycle metals such as drink cans, zinc roofing, wire, old appliances;
plastics such as drink bottles, old plastic furniture, old plastic appliances, paper and cardboard,
rubber, glass bottles and broken glass. We will also highlight products made from recycled
materials.
We will demonstrate how kitchen food scraps can be used to make compost fertilizer in community
gardens.
We would also like to collaborate with Cebu City Council in Clean-Up Cebu by organizing to work with
a few Barangays to clean up all rubbish and to organize recycling depots. With a few successful
examples we can then inspire and motivate other Barangays to do the same. With so many young
people coming to the festival we are sure to find people willing to participate in this scheme who can
then motivate other volunteers in the local Barangays.
Sustainable Agriculture
People, organizations and companies working in the area of sustainable agriculture such as organic
farming and Permaculture will be encouraged to attend. There will also be stalls selling wholesome
food and locally grown organic produce. Other exhibitions might involve compost heaps, methane
digestors, making organic fertilizers, organic (natural) insecticides, worm farms, open-pollinated
heritage seeds. We will showcase community gardens around Cebu.
A group of Permaculturalists, for example, plan to display a ‘rocket stove’, and a ‘composting toilet’
amongst other innovative community-scale technologies and organic farming practices.
Tree-planting
We wish to showcase tree-planting campaigns already underway in the Cebu region such as Trees
for the Future campaign and the Million Trees campaign, so that people attending the festival can
learn how to participate on weekends and in their free time. We intend to have some native
hardwood seedlings on display for people to take home and plant.
Community development
Organisations involved in sustainable community development projects in Cebu are invited. There is
an exciting opportunity here to bring together people from community development with experts in
renewable energy and appropriate technology design, green architects and engineers, as well as
people from sustainable organic farming.
Expression of Intent
If your organization would like to participate in this exciting event here in Cebu City, please fill out
the enclosed Registration Form and send it to EarthDanceCebu@gmail.com. We will keep you
informed of developments.
Sincerely,
Geoff Holland (JahFe),
