reads the date from the board.

forms and asks students to copy in their notebook and write the name of each letter, its
forms, and its sound in English.

2. Short Vowel Lesson

Warm up: Review all letters known so far.

Guided Practice: Teacher explains that the letters we are learning so far are all consonants and require
additional help to actually produce sounds. This is the role of the little floating vowels that can be attached
to the letters above or below. Ustaz writes each vowel and models how they affect a given consonantb +
fatHah = ba; b+ Dammah = bu; b + kasrah = bi.

Students copy information from board (and teacher modeling) into their notebooks.

Independent Practice: Ask them to apply these vowels to all 20 letters known so far.

Wrap up: Explain that vowels can make all the difference in a words meaning. Give example of consonant
frame made different by addition of vowels. Assure them that many language systems (Hebrew, for
example) work exactly this way and it is not weird, just different.

3. Activity: Using powerpoint on the smartboard, Teacher has table of 20 letters in first, middle
or final form; asks students to read aloud each letter using the vowels to change the pronunciation

Exit ticket Students practice writing their names with voweling
