Part A: Briefly answer the following questions about the literary devices (4 marks)

1. In the following stanza of The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls, what words personify the sea and the waves?

How do these images contribute to the hints of what has happened to the traveler? (2 marks)

Darkness settles on roofs and walls,

But the sea, the sea in the darkness calls;

The little waves, with their soft, white hands,

Efface the footprints in the sands,

And the tide rises, the tide falls.

Answer: Personification: the verbs (calls for the sea, and efface for the waves).

Some inferences:

+ The traveler has lost in the race within the rising and falling of the tide.

+ There is no visible sign of the traveler in his travelling.

+ All his achievements are erased by the force of nature.

+The traveler has left the sea

2. How does the repetition of the last two lines reveal the spiritual value(s) of the poem Stopping by

woods on a snowy evening? (2 marks)

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep

Answer: The spiritual value of the repetition: Human has to fulfill their responsibilities in their life before

they die (before I sleep) though there are difficulties (miles to go) they may face in their life.

Answer: - Explain the symbols hills and white elephants in relation to the body shape of a pregnant

woman (hills) and the useless baby(white elephants)

of life? Explain. (1 mark)

Answer: Explain the symbol the tide in relation to the rising and the falling of life.

3. Why is the time of year so important in this line of The story of an hour: She could see in the

open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life? (1

mark)

Answer: Explain the symbol new spring life in relation to Mrs. Mallards achievement in her fight for

freedom.
