We were able to meet Elaina this week. She is a gifted and talented six year old girl. We
learned through the Multiple Intelligence survey that she is a visual learner and also a
kinesthetic learner. It will be important to have Elaina use her body and her mind during our
tutoring lessons this semester.

In this session we focused on sequencing for the ELA portion. We talked about the basic
transition words needed for writing a paragraph. We had Elaina trace her hand on a piece of
paper and labeled each finger Seven by Seven where the student rolled a pair of dice and
added the numbers. Then, the student placed a chip on the sum, which were on different
sheets of construction paper. Elaina needed to move to put the chips down and she liked
rolling the big dice and retrieving them.

In accordance with Gardeners Theory of Multiple Intelligence we used Elainas strength as a

kinesthetic learner during this lesson-especially during the math portion of the lesson.. Elaina
thrives when she is engaged using her body and her mind simultaneously.

In this session we worked with Elaina on brainstorming some ideas of what we could write
about. During our brainstorming activity she told us about her upcoming graduation and
through our discussion we all decided that graduation would be an excellent topic to write
about. Elaina even practiced her lines for her show! In math we talked about using the
strategy of counting on and learned more by watching a BrainPop video. We told Elaina that
she should put the bigger number in her head and the count on from there. That seemed to
help her figure out where she needed to begin in order to solve the given math sentence.

We can relate this weeks session to Blooms Theory. He says that learners will be able to learn
90% of what they say and do. We have Elaina DOING as much as we can. We have her up
and moving, creating, writing, producing, solving throughout the 60 minutes that we have her
in front of us. Each time she has experiences like rolling dice, or playing cards, or playing a
twister game.

In the area of ELA we had Elaina write her first draft. When she was done with the writing
piece she was able to record her first draft on chatterpix. I think it was great to listen to her
writing because she could hear where she could change some parts of it. In the area of math
we worked on two digit addition. We used a Twister mat to create the math sentences. Elaina
liked the Twister Board because she was able to move her body and touch the colorful spots.

Being that Elaina is considered gifted and talented, we can relate her work this week to
Kaltzkys theory. Klatzky says that the true art of memory is the art of attention. Elaina is
always engaged and always attentive. She was able to think of a topic, and then write five
interesting, detailed sentences about her chosen topic of kindergarten graduation. This would
be a difficult task for other kindergarteners, but for Elaina it was a piece of cake!

This session we worked on Elainas math skills by rolling dice to get two numbers. Then she
would lay out the number of counters that were displayed on each die and then would subtract
or add the two number together, using the counters. Elaina enjoyed using the dice and the
counters. When Elaina was trying to add the addends in her head she was getting some
incorrect. When we had her use the counters she was doing much better. In the area of ELA
we worked on editing her writing piece. We had Elaina go through her work and find some of
her own mistakes. She did a great job and said she felt like a teacher!

By using the counters in math and editing Elainas writing using red pen to see where she
needs to change her writing we were tapping into Elainas preferred learning style of visual
learning. She performed better when she was able to touch the counters and move them
around to make groups. Elaina was also able to see where her mistakes were in her writing.

We had Elaina read her finished product into a chatterpix. She loved hearing her final piece
and you could see she felt proud of her work. Elaina used her best handwriting and finished
the writing. She did however fatigue after the writing and didnt really want to do the
illustration. In math we worked on identifying the correct operation. We used Kahoot to test
her pre and post knowledge and Elaina really loved using this piece of technology. We also
used Brainpop and that was great for her to see and hear the strategies and information.

We tapped into Elainas visual and audio intelligence this week. When she watches the
Brainpop she hears and sees the information she needs to learn in order to solve the math
equations. When Elaina sees and hears herself reading back her written piece she internalizes
the information and therefore remembers what has been presented to her.

Today we worked on practicing Elainas addition and subtraction facts. We used a bowling
activity which she really liked. We set up bowling pins and had her knock as many as she
could down and then we made math sentences out of how many were standing and how many
were knocked down. In the area of ELA we had Elaina rad her published writing assignment
in a ChatterPix. Elaina read her writing piece and then Arthur the Aardvark read it back to
her. She really loved it and it really seemed to resonate with her. She was able to recite all
parts of the writing process and explain each part.

Our lessons that we prepared for Elaina this week really tapped into her preferred learning
style of using her body. According to the Multiple Intelligence theory of Gardner, learning
through using your body is one of the basic ways in which we can take in information and
learn it. When Elaina was up and rolling the bowling ball she was having fun but was also
learning. She was excited to solve the math problem and to move on to the next one.
