Unit Title: Solving Quadratic Equations Name: Steve Chavez

Content Area: Algebra I Grade Level: 9

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
In Algebra I, students learn function notation and develop the concepts of domain and range. They focus on linear, quadratic, and exponential functions,
including sequences, and also explore absolute value, step, and piecewise functions; they interpret functions given graphically, numerically, symbolically,
and verbally; translate between representations; and understand the limitations of various representations. Students build on and extend their
understanding of integer exponents to consider exponential functions. They compare and contrast linear and exponential functions, distinguishing between
additive and multiplicative change. Students explore systems of equations and inequalities, and they nd and interpret their solutions. They interpret
arithmetic sequences as linear functions and geometric sequences as exponential functions.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
1) Deepen and extend understanding of linear and exponential relationships
2) Contrast linear and exponential relationships with each other and engage in methods for analyzing, solving, and using quadratic functions
3) Extend the laws of exponents to square and cube roots
Unit Summary:
In this unit, students will understand how to solve a quadratic equation by critically analyzing the equation and determining the best method for solving it. By using both
algebraic methods and graphing methods, they can accurately solve the equations. Because there are four different strategies, students can easily choose which method to
prefer to use unless told otherwise on a specific problem. In doing so, students are expected to fully understand the relationship between quadratic equations and the roots
they have by effectively solving the problem using any strategy given.
