DESIGN BASIS FOR INTAKE STRUCTURE AND RAW WATER PUMPING STATION

PART 1 CIVIL SPECIFICATIONS

1. Introduction

Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority has proposed to construct

an Intake Structure to draw water for its South Central Zone at Kharguli on
Brahmaputra River. A Mathematical modeling supported with remote
sensing based GIS study has been conducted by IIT Roorkee to locate Intake
structure at this site. The well is located (location 3).

2. Site Conditions

a) Site location -

As per tender doc, section IV, Technical specs, subsection 9, 1 circular well
intake system with min inside dia of 18 m. The well shall be constructed at
well location 3 (2898311 N, 377083.5 E) as per IIT Roorkee
recommendations (for minimum sedimentation and scour point of view) and
soil report proposal. Scour level is 16.54 m below bed level.

c) Scour level
Design scour depth =25.94 m ( Ref as per IIT R report, Table 5,
WL 3, Highest discharge condition)
Bed level = 32.6 RL

Observation -

After scour consideration and calculation of moments on the base of well

due to the foreseeable loads (Point 4), it is expected that the well would
need to go deeper than 22 m as mentioned in part 4 of soil investigation
report. Also, if the well goes below the fractured rock layer, it is foreseeable
that some complications may arise due to the gneiss level being at a steep
slope of 1:1.2 & 1:1.6 as mentioned in part 2 of soil investigation report.

DESIGN BASIS FOR INTAKE STRUCTURE AND RAW WATER PUMPING STATION

Recommendations -

For easier and faster construction, it would be more suitable to go for pile
foundation system instead of the well foundation system considered
initially. The depth of the pile shall be till the non-erodible rock level. Same
shall be confirmed by the soil consultant.

3. Design parameters-

The following are the parameters for load calculation with references -

Hydraulic parameters

HFL = 51.8 m ( as per tender doc & soil report)

Highest discharge = 72794 m3/s ( Ref as per IIT R report, Table 4)
Average discharge = 19820 m3/s ( Ref as per IIT R report, Table 4)
Lowest discharge = 1757 m3/s ( Ref as per IIT R report, Table 4)
Mean Velocity = 1.83 m/s ( as per IIT R report)
Design velocity taken = 4m/s
Minimum water level = 39.55 m ( Ref as per IIT R report, Table 4)
Intake well Invert Level/Bottom Level= 36.55m
Max. Silt level over bed level= 34.863m (Ref Annexure-1)

Analysis

FEM modeling and analysis shall be done in Staad/ Etabs for the whole
structure with separate load cases as per IRC 6. Design shall be as per tender
conditions. Piles would be designed as composite section as per ANSI AISC
360 and other relevant codes.

Wind load as per IS 875 pt 3.
Seismic load as per IS 1893.
Hydrodynamic load as per IS 1893 1984

4. Superstructure

Intake well shall be on steel piles in filled with concrete. Pile numbers and
depth would be decided after load calculations on the well and the soil

Electrical/Control and Instrumentation Design considerations

INTENT:-
To specify the basic design parameters for Electrical/C&I works in the
preview of Intake water pump House.
Consideration:-
Mechanical design considerations 3.3/6.6kV motors are being considered
due to higher rating of Vertical pumps. Therefore four Nos. transformers to
be considered (2 nos. 33kV/3.3kV and two Nos. 3.3kV/0.433kV for LV loads
like desilting pumps, motorized valves, lighting, EOT cranes, DC battery
chargers etc. Similarly two types of HT Switchboards for 33kV and 3.3kV
shall be considered along with 415V LV switchboards in the MCC room.
For Lighting loads, two nos. dry type transformers of 415/240V shall be
considered in lieu of 415V/110V to maintain the standard power supply. The
control supply for HT/MV switchgear shall be 110V DC, whereas for LT
system, it shall be 240V AC.
Detailed Considerations:-
For Electrical detailed specification, design parameters as per subsection 7
as noted below shall be considered.

It was observed that the maximum level of siltation for C03 is 34.863 m lvl.

LWL for this location is 39.55 m lvl. The sump level considered is 36.55 m lvl.

Also, as per Hydrology report from IIT Roorkee, there is high shear stress value at this location, making it
less vulnerable to siltation effects.
