Procedures Guiding Questions: What is a search engine?
Vocabulary: search engine, locate, keywords, specific
1. Discuss our learning targets, guiding questions, and vocabulary.
2. Turn and talkHave you searched online before? If so, what search engine did
you use? What did you search? Did you think it was easy or difficult? Did
you find what you were looking for? What device were you using?
3. Students will watch How Search Engines Work Video
4. Tell students that today, we are going to be internet detectives, and practice
searching and locating information.
5. As a class, we will create a list of questions we have concerning elephants, and
add them to the Google Doc
-Where do elephants live?
-What do elephants eat?
-What types of elephants are there?
6. Ask students: Keeping these questions in mind, what should we put in the
search bar to find the answer to where elephants live?
7. Use an answer from a student (example: elephants) that will be too broad
8. On the SMART Board: Type elephants in the search box of kidrex.org
9. Discuss the search results and click on both examples and non-examples
- Is this what we were looking for?
- Does this answer our question?
- How can we narrow our search?
10. Use student response to narrow search: i.e. Where elephants live and type in
the search box
11. Compare results from elephants search and where elephants live search
12. As a group, make an anchor chart of keywords to use when searching
13. The second result (http://www.elephant-world.com/elephant-habitat/) contains
the answer to the question. Read aloud as students follow along and have them
give a thumbs up if they hear the answer to the question Where do elephants
live?
14. When students hear that most elephants live in Africa, they put their thumb in
the air
15. Discuss google docs and how it can be used to collaborate
16. Students will now enter the Google Doc to type the found information
17. Together, students will type in Africa next to their assigned pair number
18. Students will click on KidRex
19. Together, we will use KidRex to search for answers to our next question:
What do elephants eat?
20. Students will type the question into Kidrex and I will type it on the SMART
board
21. After students have had the chance to look through the search results, we will
vote on which site to click on, I will then read the webiste and see if we found
information pertaining to our question
22. Again, students will give a thumbs up when/if they hear the answer to the
question
23. Discuss findings as a group
24. We will go back to google docs and each pair will type in their answer in the
space provided
25. The process will be repeated for the next (and any additional) questions
26. Turn and talkWhat is the most important thing you learned today? How can
you find answers to question online?

28. Students will be given plickers for the assessment/exit slip

Accomodations Students will be paired with a partner of varying abilities, so they are able to help one
another. Students who are unable or struggle with reading and/or typing, will be able
to use voice typing under tools in Google Docs.
Assessment Using plickers, students will answer the following question:
1. What are search engines used for?

c. write a story
d. play soccer
