Targets I can write reasons to support my opinion.
Procedures Context: The goal of this lesson is for students to write a shared opinion piece
about a book they like on the class wiki. Prior to this lesson, the books that
students can choose from for their opinion piece were utilized to address
reading comprehension and science standards. The students are familiar with
these texts and anchor charts were created and saved to aid reading
comprehension. Due to students only being able to work one at a time on their
page and it being their first time working with the wiki students will be
completing their independent practice with the assistant during writers
workshop just four at a time. The support with the assistant will be provided at
the wiki writers workshop station in order for students to develop the skills to
incorporate the use of the wiki independently at the station in the future.
Introduction:
Begin by reminding students of the four texts A House for Hermit Crab,
Mister Seahorse, The Tiny Seed, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar all
by Eric Carle. Quickly review each of the books with students.
Explain that today students will choose one of these four books that they
liked best and write a book review. Remind students, a book review is
where you give your opinion on a book and give reasons for your
thinking. Today you will choose which book you liked best and give
reasons why you liked it on our class wiki. Each book has its own page
on the wiki and you will write your book review with your group.
Teacher modeling (I do):
Say to students, I will model how you will complete your book review
with one of the Eric Carle books that we are not using today. I am
going to write a book review for Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do
You See?
Model going to the wiki page and clicking on the Brown Bear, Brown
Bear, What Do You See? page.
Read the directions aloud on the page to students. To complete their
book review each group needs to include the title of the book, a picture
of the front cover, their opinion, and three reasons why they liked the
book. While going over the directions make an anchor chart listing the
steps to creating the book review for students to reference during their
independent practice.
Model how students will complete the book review on the wiki making
sure to use the correct buttons (edit and save) and reminding students
that only one student can type at a time.
Jordan Cornett

Remind students to hit save and once finished check their work to make
sure they included all components.
Guided practice (we do):
Have students choose which book they like best out of the four options
and put students in groups based off of their choice. Write the group
members names on an anchor chart under the title of the book they
chose for reference during writers workshop independent practice.
Once students are in their groups have them discuss reasons they like
their books. After discussion, have each group share why they liked the
book.
Pass out the iPads to groups. Tell students that you are going to allow
them to get started on their book review.
Have groups find their appropriate page from tabs on the side of the
wiki page.
Have the groups press edit on their page. Again go over the directions
on the page with students and tell them that they should leave the
directions at the top for help. Remind students that they should have the
iPad read to them as needed.
Begin by having students type the title of the book and their opinion, i.e.
I like the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Remind
students to check their spelling especially when they see a red line
underneath their words and that they can use the Google Docs app to
convert speech to text.
Have the students practice pressing save after they write their opinion
and the title of the book.
Also teach students how they can copy the image of the front cover of
the book, from the assignment page, and paste it into their wiki page for
their book.
Independent practice (you do):
Tell students they will now finish their wiki page with their group by
adding reasons why they like the book. Since they cannot all do this at
the same time tell them that this will be a station today for writers
workshop with the assistant.
Tell students that a person from each group will be called one at a time
to work on their wiki page with the assistant.
Tell students that they will need to read what their other group members
wrote and then add something to it making sure that they follow the
directions.
Remind students of their other options for writers workshop while they
wait to be called to work on their wiki page.
During this time students will either be with the teacher, working on
another writing piece, or working on their wiki page with the assistant.
Closing:
After all students have visited the wiki station call all students to the
carpet.
Jordan Cornett

Display the class wiki on the smartboard for all students to see.
Allow each group to click on their book page and read their book review
aloud to the class.
Lesson accommodations:
Assignment directions anchor chart
Books will be provided to groups for reference
Comprehension lesson anchor charts will be accessible
Assistant will provide support at the wiki station
iPad Speak Selection can be used for reading directions
Use of Google Docs voice dictation on iPad app as needed can then be copied
and pasted onto wiki page
Assessment:
The assistant will collect anecdotal notes during her work with the students at
the wiki writers workshop station to note misconceptions that I must re-teach
and students that could benefit from further instruction with the wiki. Students
will also be assessed based off of their effort towards the final product on their
wiki page.
