RATIONALE

Totaling ten (10) predesigned laboratory experiments for Chemical Engineering

Laboratory II were performed in De La Salle University and Adamson University. The
conduct of these experiments provided us the opportunity to apply the theories learned to
hands-on practical experience.
Few of the equipment operated are cooling tower, tray drier, gas absorption column,
plug-flow tubular reactor, agitator etc. though are in small scale posed similar industrial
equipment functions, illustrating the standard process and operation with the practical
application of the theoretical concepts. Experiments were accomplished driven with
objectives and data gathered are processed to understand the concept behind through use
of formulas and logical analysis thus to further evaluate reliability of the experimental data
and validate theories. The degree of the acceptability of the experimental results were
influenced by different factors; such as conditions (temperature, pressure, flow rate,
humidity etc.), the type of material (s)/equipment used, the accuracy in determining the
concentration with the use of a device such as refractometer and the functioning condition
of the equipment. To achieve the optimum process and operation, these factors have to be
controlled and monitored otherwise failed experiment would result, as in Gas Absorption
the effects of increasing the flow rate would result to increased absorbed but flooding
has to be observed as this will likely to occur, in the case of the experiment in plug-flow
tubular reactor the degree of conversion was greatly influenced by given sets of conditions
(varying of flow rates and temperature) and the accuracy of the titration results to determine
the concentration at the end of the reaction and the like.
Laboratory experimental processes carried out in the ten listed laboratory
experiments covering the transfer of heat, separation processes, power requirement
calculation and principles of chemical reactions engineering aid on widening the
understanding on the various theories, improved knowledge on determining the factors
and how it affects, increased familiarization on equipment mechanism and usage and
widened understanding on underlying principles which can later be dealt with in
engineering works and problems emerged in the field of chemical engineering.
