Dear opera lovers,
Weve just announced our 201718
season, and I think you will agree that
it is full of musical and theatrical promise.
Once again, many of the worlds great-
est singers, conductors, stage directors,
and designers will join forces with the
Mets renowned orchestra and chorus
for a new season with aspirations of
extraordinary artistry, featuring a total
of 25 productionsboth new and tried
and true.
The season opens with a new produc-
tion of Norma, starring Sondra Radva-
novsky, only the third time Bellinis
masterpiece has been seen on Opening
Night in the 134-year history of the Met.
From the realm of bel canto we move into
the world of contemporary opera with
the U.S. premiere of Thomas Adss The
Exterminating Angel, a Met co-commis-
sion that was rapturously received at its
world premiere in Salzburg last summer.
New Years Eve sees the opening of
a new production of Puccinis Tosca with
two all-star casts. Set in Rome in the
Napoleonic Era, director David McVicars
stunning staging should appeal to
anyone seeking both high drama and
scenic splendor on our stage.

Our new Cos fan tutte takes a decid-
edly different tack, moving the action
of Mozarts tour-de-force fantasy to the
witty setting of a Coney Island amuse-
ment park in the 1950s. And in the
spring, well present Massenets own
Cinderella story, Cendrillon, for the first
time ever at the Met, in a new produc-
tion starring Joyce DiDonato.
Alongside these intriguing new
presentations, well offer a full slate of
revivals, including the widely praised
recent productions of Strausss Elektra,
starring Christine Goerke, and Wagners
Parsifalboth conducted by Met Music
Director Designate Yannick Nzet-
Sguin. We will also present a special
series of concert performances of
Verdis Requiem led by Met Music Direc-
tor Emeritus James Levine.
Throughout the new season, youll
have plenty of opportunity to hear your
favorite stars, from Anna Netrebko to
Jonas Kaufmann to Plcido Domingo.

Following the rapturous response to his last opera, The Tempest, the Met LEARN MORE
presents the American premiere of Thomas Adss The Exterminating Angel,
inspired by the classic Luis Buuel film of the same name. Hailed by the
New York Times at its 2016 Salzburg Festival premiere as inventive and
audaciousa major event, The Exterminating Angel is a surreal fantasy
about a dinner party from which the guests cant escape. Tom Cairns, who
wrote the libretto, directs the new production, and Ads conducts his own
adventurous new opera.

Glorious, raved the New York Times when Joyce DiDonato sang the title LEARN MORE
role of Cendrillon at the Royal Opera in 2011. Her performance was
thoroughly enchanting. Now, for the first time ever, Massenets sumptuous
take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met, with DiDonato starring in the
title role. She is paired with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role
of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie
Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltire. Bertrand de Billy conducts
Laurent Pellys imaginative storybook production.

Cendrillon is produced in association with the Royal Opera House,

Covent Garden, London; Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona; Thtre Royal
de La Monnaie, Brussels; and Opra de Lille. This production was first
performed at The Santa Fe Opera.
