LESSON 1: INDIRECT SPEECH: IMPERATIVES

Is a kind of noun clause. It is the direct object of a reporting verb such as say, tell or ask.

GRAMMAR:

To report what someone said without quoting the exact words, use indirect speech. Dont use
quotation marks when you write indirect speech.

Examples:

Direct speech
1) Peter said, be carefull if you go out during the storm.
2) She says, "I like ice cream."
3) They say, "You are right."
4) He says, "My name is Gary."

Indirect speech:

1) Peter say to be carefull if you go out during the storm.

2) She says to she likes ice cream.

3) They say to we are right.

4) He says his name is Gary.

An imperative indirect speech becomes an infinitive in indirect speech.

Examples:

1) They said, read the weather report. => they say to read the weather report.
2) She says, Dont go out without a full tank of gas. => She says not to go out without a
full tank of gas.

Change the pronouns in indirect speech as necessary for logic.

Examples

1) Martin said, tell me as soon as you know => Martin told me to tell him as soon as I
know.
2) She told me, please call me when you get home. => She asked me tocay her when I
get home.
3) He said to me, "Please help me." He asked me to help him.
4) "I won't do it," he said to me. He told me that he wouldn't do it
REPORTING VERBS

Reported speech can be introduced by a lot of different verbs, but most commonly by
expressions such as "He said...., He told...., He asked...... , I wonder....." etc.

Say is used in Direct Speech. It is also used in Reported Speech when it is not followed by
the person the words were spoken to.

Expressions with say: say good morning/evening etc, say something, say one's prayers, say
a few words, say so, say no more, say for certain, say for sure etc.

"I won't do it," he said. He said (that) he wouldn't do it.

We use say + to infinitive but never "say about".

Tell is used in Reported Speech when it is followed by the person the words were spoken
to.

Expressions with tell: tell the truth, tell a lie, tell (sb) the time, tell sb one's name, tell a
story, tell sb a secret, tell sb the way, tell one from another, tell sb's fortune, tell sb so, tell
the difference etc

"I won't do it," he said to me.

He told me (that) he wouldn't do it.

We use tell somebody, speak/talk about instead. e.g. Paul said to be there at 10:00.

He told us/spoke about/talked about his Misfortunes.

Ask is used in reported questions and commands or in direct questions.

Expressions with ask: ask a favour, ask the time, ask a question, ask the price etc

He said to me, "Please help me."

He asked me to help him.
