Summary- San Juan River Restoration

The reconstruction of the East Fork of the San Juan River demostrated the
alternative way of strengthening the river channel. The willows have a vital
purpose for the river channel. They hold river channel in place. In 1930`s,
willows were removed from the river channel. Then the river channel
became unstable. The water quality deteriorated. Hydrologist D.L.
Rosegern, however, came up with a solution to this problem. He
implemented to use the similar materials from the river channel to build a
new stable channel. He utilized the natural materails such as boulders, root
weeds , and vegataion to strengthen the river channel. 5 years after the
completion of the river channel, it remain stable. Therefore, This project
exemplified that river chanenel could be maintained with the natural
materials.

In conclusion, the successful San Juan river restoration is a vital discovery


to future river restoration.
