The reconstruction of the East Fork of the San Juan River demostrated the
alternative way of strengthening the river channel. The willows have a vital
purpose for the river channel. They hold river channel in place. In 1930`s,
willows were removed from the river channel. Then the river channel
became unstable. The water quality deteriorated. Hydrologist D.L.
Rosegern, however, came up with a solution to this problem. He
implemented to use the similar materials from the river channel to build a
new stable channel. He utilized the natural materails such as boulders, root
weeds , and vegataion to strengthen the river channel. 5 years after the
completion of the river channel, it remain stable. Therefore, This project
exemplified that river chanenel could be maintained with the natural
materials.
