Wiki Written Assignment

This assignment leads students to use a Wikispace to build their collaboration skills and

apply what they have learned about effectively using technology to find and share information.

A wiki is a Website that uses wiki software that allows for the creation and editing of interlinked

Web pages. Wiki is an engaging way for students to share and create content. My class lesson

on the utilization of Wikispace builds on the I do step of modeling how to use technology to

research a topic to the We Do step. This lesson will lead the students to the independent use of

technology to find and share information about their Amazing American.

ILA Standards
ILA 1.2: Candidates understand the historically shared knowledge of the profession and changes
over time in the perceptions of reading and writing development, processes and components.
ILA 2.2: Candidates use appropriate and varied instructional approaches, including those that
develop word recognition, language comprehension, strategic knowledge, and reading-writing
connections.
ILA 2.3: Candidates use a wide range of texts (e.g. narrative, expository, and poetry) from
traditional print, digital, and online resources.
ILA 4.2: Candidates use a literacy curriculum and engage in instructional practices that
positively impact students knowledge, beliefs, and engagement with the features of diversity.
ILA 5.1: Candidates design the physical environment to optimize students use of traditional
print, digital, and online resources in reading and writing instruction.

This lesson continues to lead students to build knowledge and expand their resources.

Rather than limiting information to books and articles, this lesson provides the opportunity to

guide the students to productively find and share information on websites. Students will apply

the reading-writing connection when they use their graphic organizer to write paragraphs and

create an informational piece of writing. They will also build their speaking and listening skills

to communicate with their team and in their presentation of the information they have gathered

from traditional print and online resources.

ISTE

The first ISTE standard focuses on creativity and innovation. This lesson leads students

to build on their knowledge and expand their resources to find that information. The second

ISTE standard focuses on communication and collaboration. That is a very important part of this

lesson. Students will work together with technology in their hands. This lesson leads students

to follow the steps that guide them to discuss ideas, share insight, and builds cooperative learning

skills to research topics and prepare to share their presentations. The third ISTE standard focuses

on research and information fluency. The goal of this lesson is to guide the students to

effectively research their topic online by having them gather, evaluate, and use information

through selected search engines. The fourth ISTE standard focuses on critical thinking, problem

solving, and decision making. This lesson guides students to apply their ability to choose

keywords and evaluate the information they gather when researching their topic. As a team, the

students will use critical thinking and problem solving skills to determine important information

to include in their writing.

Kentucky Teacher Standard 6

This We Do lesson meets the Kentucky Teacher Standards 6.1, 6.2, and 6.5. I used

Wiki to organize and guide instruction in research and technology skills, thereby utilizing

technology to facilitate learning. I provided step by step directions and a model of expectations

on Wiki. Using a guided practice approach of the utilization of safe and age appropriate

websites guides students to various search engines and allows the students to apply what they

have learned about how to narrow down their keywords to focus searches. Group discussions

and brainstorming will further enhance their understanding of technological terms, its many uses,

and additional ways in which technology can facilitate learning. They will write a report about

their topic with the information that they have determined is important. This project on Wiki

allows me to assess their understanding through their writing.

Common Core State Standards

RI.3.4: Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a
text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area.
RI.3.5: Use text features and search tools (e.g. key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate
information relevant to a given topic efficiently.
RI.3.9: Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts
on the same topic.
W.3.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information
clearly.
W.3.6: With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing
(using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others.
W.3.7: Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.
W.3.8: Recall information from experience or gather information from print and digital sources;
take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.

Through this lesson, students will participate in a shared research and writing project.

They will continue to build vocabulary as they gain insight regarding the importance of choosing

the best words to find needed information and to share that information. This lesson

demonstrates their ability to use hyperlinks and other text features, including a video, a picture

and a hyperlink on the Wiki assignment. Students will continue to compare and contrast

important points in a multitude of written and digital texts on the same topic. Through their

cooperative learning, students will discuss what is amazing about the Amazing American they

are researching. The purpose of this lesson is to apply what they have learned to write and

present their information.

TPACK
This lesson meets all needs of the TPACK framework. The lesson guides students to use

research strategies to search, gather, and synthesize information. Applying the principles of the

TPACK framework to this lesson requires the use of technology as a component of the

instructional process. Through Wiki, the students are guided to effectively use technology and

terminology needed to be successful in the 21st century. As with all of my lessons, I linked this

to my pedagogical and content knowledge through the I do, We do, You do instruction. This

method of instruction provides teacher modeling to provide clear guidance and expectations. It

also encourages creativity and provides students the opportunity to work together. It leads to

critical thinking to determine the information to include, and the ways to effectively

communicate that information. Through Wiki, this lesson continues to build the atmosphere of

respecting one anothers opinions and decisions. It also leads to critical thinking and deeper

learning as it encourages them to keep an open mind and consider what classmates share.

Literature on Technology

Leus statement that without the ability to locate information, students are not able to

solve problems or comprehend what they have read (2011) is the statement that has prompted me
Page |6

to consider the importance of integrating technology at the elementary level. In fact, technology

can help educators meet the needs of all learners. That is why teachers must access the students

knowledge of technology to harness their wealth of technological skills in hopes of enhancing

literacy growth (Sanden & Darragh, 2011).

Wiki is a way to access and build that knowledge of technology. A wiki is a communally

generated website where anyone can add, change, or edit content, sharing the responsibility for

its growth amongst all of its contributors (Sanden & Darragh, 2011). In other words, Wiki is a

collaborative tool that engages students and leads to Blooms higher order thinking. Students

become creative and critical thinkers that guide them to build their communication skills. A wiki

site gives students the opportunity to communicate their ideas and contribute their own thoughts

and knowledge (Sandler & Darragh, 2011).
