Wiki Lesson

Written Component

June 22, 2017

In this lesson students are practicing a reading skill in which they are determining

the main idea and supporting details of an informational passage. Students will be using

the Wiki to read a text and complete a graphic organizer telling the main idea and details.

Wikis are an online tool, which may be the easiest and most effective web-based

collaboration tool ((EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, 2005). A wiki is a great way to give

students a voice among their peers, is interactive and develops communities of practice

(Darragh & Sanden, 2011).

Common Core Standards

The Common Core standard this lesson is aligned to is RI 2.2, which says,

students can identify the main idea of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of

specific paragraphs within a text. I chose this standard because it is one that is important

across all grade levels and is one I spend a lot of time teaching and practicing with

students. I like that the students can use the Wiki to work collaboratively. Previously, I

would have students work together and create a poster or anchor chart telling the main

idea and details. I like that I can save paper, using the Wiki makes it easier to grade and it

is nice to have them all in one spot.

ILA Standards

I connected this lesson to ILA standards 2.2 and 5.4. Standard 2.2 says, candidates

use appropriate and varied instructional approaches including those that develop word

recognition, language comprehension, strategic knowledge, and reading-writing

connections. This standard is met through this lesson because I am modeling finding the

main idea at the beginning of the lesson, then during the guided practice, students are still

supported by me, but they are getting a change to work on the skill. Finally, they are set
out on their own to work with their groups on the skill being taught. Standard 5.4 says,

candidates use a variety of classroom configurations to differentiate instruction. This is

met through the lesson because there is whole group time and small group time in this

lesson.

Kentucky Teacher Standards

This lesson connects to KTS 6.2, 6.3, 6.4 and 6.5. Standard 6.2 says, teacher uses

available technology to implement instruction that facilitates student learning. This

standard connects because in this lesson I will use the smart board to project the articles

and graphic organizers for students during the whole group portion of the lesson.

Students will use chrome books to collaborate on the Wiki. Standard 6.3 says, teacher

integrates student use of available technology into instruction. This standard connects

because students will be using technology to work collaboratively on the Wiki. Standard

6.4 says, teacher uses available technology to assess and communicate student learning.

This connects because students are using Padlet during the we do portion of the lesson to

share their main idea and detail. Standard 6.5 says, demonstrates ethical and legal use of

technology. This standard is being met because my use of technology and the students

use of technology we will be ethical and legal.

ISTE Standards

This lesson is connected to two ISTE standards, with two sub standards. The first,

standard 2, says, students use digital media and environments to communicate and work

collaboratively. The substandard for this says, students interact, collaborate, and publish

with peers. This is met through this lesson because during the we do portion of the lesson,

students are discussing and coming up with an answer to post to Padlet. It is also met
during independent practice when students are working together to read and find the main

idea and details, then posting their answers to the Wiki. The second sub standard I

connected within standard 2 says, students communicate information and ideas

effectively to multiple audiences. This is met through this lesson because students are

posting to the Wiki and sharing to their classmates. The next ISTE standard this lesson

aligns with is standard 5. This standard says, students understand human, cultural, and

societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. The sub

standard says, understand and use technology systems. This is met through this lesson

because students are showing they are able to use the chrome book, Padlet, and Wiki in

this lesson.

TPACK

This lesson embodies each component of TPACK. I am using my content

knowledge to prepare an appropriate lesson for a class of second graders in which they

are working on a standard that is an important skill for them to learn. The articles and

activities are appropriate for this standard and group of learners. I have prepared a lesson

that goes through the gradual release model, which is a part of my pedagogy. The whole

group and small group practice is appropriate for second grade and good for helping

students learn the skill. I am incorporating appropriate technology in the use of Padlet

and Wiki. This is showing my knowledge of technology and how to appropriately use it

in the classroom. I think the only thing that would be better, to fully be incorporating

TPACK, would be to have students choosing how they present their graphic organizer.

Allowing student choice with technology is the component I am missing and what I can

work to improve upon.
