Part I Create a lesson plan that collects numerical data Teacher candidate will create a learning
activity where students collect numerical data
GRADE LEVEL: 2
THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do you graphically show which pie is the class favorite
by using data collected from the students?
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Given 4 pies to choose from (apple, cherry, pumpkin and blueberry)
each student will select their favorite. The data will be collected on a spreadsheet and then
created into a picture graph and a bar graph. Students will then answer questions referencing
their graphs.
Students:
a. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation.
b. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project.
c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
LEARNING/INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:
Students will collect data using a spreadsheet.
Students will create a picture graph representing the data collected.
1
Students will create a bar graph using the data collected.
Students will answer put-together, take-apart and compare problems using the bar graph.
MATERIALS/RESOURCES
Worksheet to collect data
Computer to enter information to create simple spreadsheet to tally results and create graphs
Paper and pencil to answer questions
PROCEDURE
1. Thanksgiving is coming and mother must decide how many and what kind of pies to
bake.
2. Students each select one favorite between apple, cherry, pumpkin and blueberry.
3. Students record their answers on a worksheet.
4. A spreadsheet is created using the names of the pies.
5. Students enter the choices and tally the results using a sum function.
6. Two graphs are then created, one bar graph and one picture graph representing the data
collected.
7. The data is analyzed by answering a series of questions.
How many apple and cherry pieces of pie do you need?
If 1 less person liked the favorite pie, how many pieces would you need?
If there are 4 pieces in 1 pie, how many pies would we need of each kind?
Now write your own question and have a friend answer it.
PROJECT HAND-IN: Student will turn in spreadsheet, graphs and answer sheet.
