Social determinants of health.

Social determinants of health refer to the environmental conditions in which people are

born, their age and also the places they worship, live, play and work and how these factors affect

their quality of life, health and risks. Social, economic and physical conditions of various

environmental settings such as neighborhood, workplace, school or church are commonly referred

to as place.' Additionally, patterns by which people engage, their well-being and sense of security

are highly influenced by where they live. Population health outcomes can be affected significantly

by enhancing the quality of life (Pacquiao, 2016). From a public health perspective, social

determinants of health are significant.

In essence, public health is concerned with promoting human health by prolonging life

and preventing diseases. Also, it deals with the threats revealed after population health analysis.

Public health is a social issue concerned with social determinants of health that are one of the

leading causes of health inequalities for both communicable and non- communicable diseases

(Marmont, & Bell, 2012). Analyzing and understanding SDOH promotes better public health

services.

Poverty is a limit to a safe neighborhood, healthy food and proper education. Therefore, it

is one of the major hindrances to good health. Additionally, striking differences in health are

experienced in areas with below average social determinants of health such as low income, poor

education, unsafe neighborhoods or unstable housing. Conversely, knowledge on SDOH is useful

in improving population and individual health also in advancing health equity (Pacquiao, 2016).

Therefore, this can be achieved through promoting proper physical and social environments that

enhance good health for everybody.

To conclude this discussion, social determinants of health are environmental factors that

affect the quality of health. Additionally, factors such as poverty and living environment highly

affect quality of health. Conversely, public health is concerned with promoting quality health and

prolonging life. Therefore, through a proper understanding of the SDOH, public health providers

can improve quality of health and promote good health care.
