REFLECTION
A simple name might look easy to
give but in reality it is hard to find the best
name for something. We realized that there
were actually so many process involved in
the simple naming of a new element and that
there were so many people assigned and
given tasks in each process. It was not just
the simple and instant discover, assign
name and place on periodic table process
but instead a long tedious process involving
confirmation of the element, a meeting for
proposing the name, another one to debating
its appropriateness, as well as confirming
said appropriateness, a public trial where
anyone can criticize the name before the
final induction to the periodic table.
So many people are involved in each
process of a seemingly easy task of naming
a newly discovered element and the element
as well as the name are criticized and
evaluated each step of the way. Such a long
and tedious process for simply naming an
element might seem like overkill to some
especially to the discoverers but to them, it
is just a small price to pay if the name of
their discovery, one based on something
significant to their scientific community or
to their countrys culture, is forever
immortalized into the Periodic Table of
Elements.
