Vous n’étes pas obligé dinclure tous ces renseignements. \Vietim impact Statement made by Edith Thomas in regards to Helen Matheson | met Helen and Cart Matheson shortly after my marriage on March 28, 1969. Itwas not until the early 1990's that Helen and | became closer. We built a house behind Matheson’s in Innerki. Helen was different things to different people. She was a mother to Jon, grandmother to 4 boys, and a preatgrandmother to 4 children. She was also an aunt to several nieces and nephews. l admired Helen as she was a very strong lady, She outlived son Nell, grandson Brian, husband Carl and her two sisters Doris and Leona. Also nephew Jim. ‘Tome she was a substitute mother, My own mother developed Alzheimers in her late SO's A short time before Helen's husband Carl died, he came to visit me and asked if could keep an ye on Helen, Lill never forget my answer. I sald what trouble can Helen get into. She goes to church on Sunday and Woodstock on Tuesday. ‘she always was happy to come to the various programmes | had atthe library and | would go to things that was atthe Innerkip United Church. I would go to doctor or hospital appointments with her and Jon. “Through time she was beginning to show symptoms of Alzheimer's. Atthat time she was in her carly 90's. She was hospitalized in Woodstock General Hospital. ! went often to see her, brought her laundry home. Did what ever she needed. After three weeks or so Jon called and sald he was asked to look at long term homes, She was to be put in a home. Jon picked Crescent Care in Woodstock, she was to go into the retirement section frst. We were told ‘what time to get her from Woodstock General and take her to Crescent Care. drove the car ‘and walked in with her as did Jon. She kept asking me why are we coming here, The tears were running down my face. | told her to see someone | felt so bad leaving her. Jon filled in admission papers,t put her things away. She was in good spirits. Soon she was moved into the locked area, | would take my dog and visit her two or three times a week. She was always Ina pleasant frame of mind, Very happy just to see us. We would sit and look out the windows atthe flowers and birds. Or we would go to bingo or hymn sing, ‘When she was In Crescant Care her clothes would be misplaced I would buy what she needed and take them to the home for her. Always saw that they were labeled. On the day of her 95th birthday | was to bring the juice and plates. Jon was to get the cake. welll forgot the plates and he brought blue cupcakes. The staff had put on anew white bedspread for the party. There was tobe the three of us plus my dog. He was ite so always sat on Helen's bed She handed the cupcakes around and gave one tothe dog. What a mess. She laughed so much and so hard staff came into the room to see what was going. They too joined in soon the room was ful. Everyone in there was laughing | was very surprised when Jon called to say Helen had passed away. | went tothe funeral and burlal It was very sad for me as t was a great loss ther funeral the minister said | was the daughter she never had, | kept in touch with Jon and would vist thelr home outside of Peterborough as he would come to Woodstock to my house, and came to my new place in Vienna. (On October 7, 2016 | was visiting Jon and his wife Pat. answered the door, The man Introduced himself as Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman ofthe OPP, handed me his badge and asked for Jon, livited him inside. was confused and concerned to what was happening at home as my son dives to and from work on the 401, Mr Hagerman advised the three of us that Helen did not die of natural causes. Hjust dropped or fell ina chair. He couldn't tell us much about what was happening just wanted us to know before It hit the media. Mr Hagerman stayed with us for awhile asked if we had questions, mine was why Helen. He asked us ‘questions about the staff and how we asa family where treated and how we saw Helen treated, | told him every thing was good. | had ne problems: On the morning of October 31, 2016 | woke with what thought was heart attack symptoms. | got myself to the ER department of St Thomas Elgin General Hospital. There | was treated by Or Dhaliwal. Dr Dhaliwal introduced me to the staff counselor who suggested that I join the VON. Breavement walking group in St Thomas, | start on June 13, 2017. Also Dr Dhaliwal was concerned that | should see Dr Zahid Sardar, an internal medicine specialist in St Thomas. Even to this day every ime | hear of ofthe incident concerning Helen and the others involved | ary overcome with sadness and depression. Her passing was hard enough but to find our what actually take place will be on my mind and in my heart forever.
