Learning Targets
I can..
Collaborate with my classmates to create a digital story about the rules of my classroom.
Lesson Procedures
**Prior to this lesson, students have learned and agreed on the rules of the classroom (Follow
directions quickly, raise your hand for permission to speak, raise your hand for permission to
leave your seat, make smart choices, and keep your dear teacher happy by being respectful,
responsible, safe, and kind). These are the rules used in a Whole Brain Teaching classroom.
Day One, Model Lesson
Explain to students that you are going to work on a fun and exciting activity to help us
learn more about why our rules are important.
Have everyone stand up in a circle and chorally say the rules as a class (This should be a
routine by now, as students do this every morning in morning meeting).
Explain to students that in order to understand the rules and their importance more
deeply, we are going to create digital stories about the rules.
Explain to students that digital storytelling is a way of telling a story, but instead of
writing the story on a piece of paper, they are using technology to create the story.
Explain to students that they will get to use their actual voices to tell the story.
Explain to students that they will be using an app on the iPad called Doceri.
Explain to students that on Doceri, they can write, draw, and add pictures to their story.
They can also record their voices when they tell the story.
Open the app on your teacher iPad, and show students what it will look like when they
begin a new story.
Show students the most important features/the features of the app they will be using to
create their story.
After giving the demonstration, explain to students that you have made a digital story
about the rules as a model.
Before showing the video, explain to students that before you made your video you still
had to engage in the pre-writing process.
Show students the story map you created for your story. Explain to students that this was
the first step you took to help you think about the rules and why they were important.
After you have shown students the story map, show them your story board. Explain to
students that the story board was a way be organized and ready before recording. Explain
to students that you knew exactly what you were going to say in your recording because
you had it all written on your story board.

After watching the story, tell them that their story will look something like this when they
are finished; however, it will take a lot of planning and preparation with their group first.
Show students the blank graphic organizer they are going to use.
Explain that their first group assignment is to organize their thoughts and ideas onto the
story map.
Group students in groups of three and four.
Day Two and beyond
Students will continue working in groups on their story map. When they have completed
their story map and have had it checked with you, have students move on to the story
board.
Once students have completed their story board in their group, they may move onto
making their story on Doceri. At this point groups will be working at different paces.
Some students may still be working on their story board while others may have started
making their digital story.
Student Assessment
Students will be assessed through anecdotal notes throughout the pre-writing and making of the
digital story. Once students are finished with their digital story, students will be assessed based
on a rubric. The rubric will include students collaboration with their group members, inclusion
of all five rules, and a sufficient reason as to why each rule is important.
