Lesson Title: Photoshop postcard

Teachers Name: Stephanie Krause


Grade Level: 11th Grade
Content Area: Art
Time to Complete: 2-4 class periods

1. Lesson Description/ Overview:


Students will begin to learn the basics in Photoshop and have to create the front and back
of a postcard. This will incorporate different techniques with editing and photos and
adding shapes on top of the design. Students will have to create text on top of their
postcard as well and turn in a final printed and cut copy.

2. Goals:
The goal is for each student to have created one post card with the use of typography,
shape overlay and incorporates a picture they have taken and edited. The students will
also leave knowing the basics of Photoshop to help them on their next project in class.
They will also leave with new design vocabulary terms and craftsmanship knowledge.

3. Instructional Objectives:
1. Students will understand information regarding Photoshop terms and techniques.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate competence of new techniques with incorporating
them into their postcard design.
3. Students will understand craftsmanship and why its important.

4. Expressive Outcome(s): One 4x6 postcard front and back

5. Vocabulary and Definitions:

Typography: the style and appearance of printed matter. The art or procedure of
arranging type or processing data and printing from it.

Craftsmanship: the quality of design and work shown in something made by hand;
artistry. "a piece of fine craftsmanship"

dpi: Dots per inch. This describes how many dots per inch can be printed on a page and
is a measure of how good a printer is. Generally, printers can print many more dots per
inch than the pixels per inch that need to be printed.

PSD file format: Photoshops own format for saving files. Files saved in this format
retain layer and channel information. The images resolution and spot color channels are
also saved, as is image bit depth. PSD files save information about the file, including its
layers and channels, so that those items can be continually edited.

Color palette: Displays information on the current foreground and background colors
and allows you to change the colors as desired and/or base the colors on different color
models.

Computers
Adobe Photoshop
Sketch Paper
Cameras
Quality Printer paper
Exacta Knifes
Cutting boards
Rulers

7. Procedures:
Brief discussion of Photoshop
Explain to the students our project assignment
Begin first tutorial with students to get started
Students can begin working
Second class, demonstrate second tutorial
Students have brought in photos to incorporate
Students continue working
Third Class students start printing and trimming their postcards
Final day critique of all postcards.

8. Assessment/Evaluation(s):
Having completed one post card incorporating an edited picture they have taken, shape
overlay and typography will evaluate each student. As well as the final printed and cut
version will be evaluated on craftsmanship.

9. Accommodations:
I will offer extra time during lunch or after school if students need help learning the
programs as well as working on their projects. Also we can make other accommodations
for students who make have other needs once we are made aware.

Standard 1: The student will demonstrate competence in the use of ideas, materials,
techniques, and processes in the creation of works of visual art.

sensitivity sufficient to make his or her intentions observable in the artwork that he or
she creates.

Standard 2: The student will use composition and the elements and principles of
design to communicate ideas.

design and other compositional structures and strategies used in
the visual arts to communicate ideas.
