Roles of the Teacher

My role as an educator is to foster a passion for learning in my students. I will respect my

students as individuals with their own experiences, and I will work to gain the same respect

from them. It is my goal to ignite a passion for success in my students while keeping in mind

that each student is an individual with different needs. Each student that I may encounter may

come to me with their own experiences and I will use these experiences to spark a desire to

learn. As a teacher, I feel that many times we teach in a way that we are the most comfortable

in, and that in many cases is not what is best for our students. It is important that as teachers

we take what we know about our students and we advocate for them. It is important that we

advocate for all our students equally and create equity and respect within the classroom and

create an environment where they feel encouraged to learn. I will work to make my classroom

environment where students are encouraged to thrive because the instruction is done in such a

way that they can understand. Harry K. Wong & Rosemary T. Wong (2014), state that it is

important that the students trust you before they trust what you plan to teach them. I believe

that this is true because as a teacher you need to create that trust in your classroom it is one of

the most important things to have in place. Ultimately, my duty as a teacher to create a safe

classroom environment where I cultivate my students strengths and help develop their

weaknesses as I help guide them towards their path to success.

Roles of the Students1

Students learn best when they can use their experiences to expand on what they are

learning. Student should be guided through the information where they can take what they
know and interpret meaning from it. Through classroom discussions and critical thinking

students can collaborate with members of their classroom environment to form an

understanding of the material. Students learn best when the material is presented in a way that

they can understand. Howard Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences (19830, has helped

shed light to the different intelligences an individual can have. These particular intelligences are

important in helping students who dont respond to the traditional approach of education. With

Gardners theory students are able expand their strengths and develop their weaknesses.

Role of the Parents.

The role of the parents is to support their students. Adolescence is a difficult time there

are many changes occurring with your student. As a parent, you know the most about your child.

Parents need to connect with the teachers to help their students become successful. Wong &

Wong (2014), state that research has shown that students whose parents help at school have a

better attitude in the classroom and they also maintain higher academic achievements. The more

that a parent becomes involved in their childs education the better the child will do. Not only do

Wong & Wong (2014), mention how the child reacts they also mention how those parents who

are a part of their childrens education feel better equipped to help their child with their

schoolwork at home. It is important that parents partner with the teachers they are their biggest

ally in helping their student on the path to success. The teacher and the parent want what is best

for the child and by collaborating together they are looking out for the childs best interest. Many

parents at the secondary level typically dont intervene but as the teacher it is my responsibility

to seek assistance from parent. It is important that parents do become active members of the
school community because at the secondary level students become more exposed to many

things that may cause harm to them. Parent presence can help intervene in many of these

dangerous things that students can be exposed to and help aid the teacher in preventing things

from occurring. There is no better team than the parent and the teacher they both share the

common goal being the success of the student.

Role of the Environment

The environment plays an important role in the childs education. Maria Montessori

(2013), speaks of a term known as valorization in the classroom environment and how it is the

process of the adolescent becoming a strong and worthy person. The classroom environment is

very important we can take the experiences of the child and help aid the students within the

classroom. Valorization in the classroom environment occurs when the child successfully realizes

they are capable of effort and they are successfully meeting challenges. When the child has

successfully met their challenges then the student can go on the path of their success. As a

teacher, I will cultivate the environment within the adolescent community and enhance my

students ability to develop valorization.
