CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the introduction, statement of the problem, significance of the study

and scope and delimitation.

Introduction

We live in an age where knowledge becomes obsolete more quickly, the more quickly

information becomes accessible through computer networks, the more the need to increase

lifelong learning and teaching models based on knowledge transmission and storage lose their

functionality. Within mainstream education system rigid and often ineffective, students acquire

some knowledge / skills just because they are being tested and not because these would be some

intrinsic value as educational purposes. (Roman, 2010)

Learning has been and remains a central issue in school, because of the complexity and

importance of this process for the evolution of society. However, quality education is needed for

the students to achieve success. The phenomenal need for implementing and creating new

strategies and techniques are inevitable. Gibbs (1992) stated that learners have their own
M.A.Inc.3-25-17

systematic way of transforming information into knowledge, and learners differ in how and well

they do this. In other words, learners employ different learning strategies when they learn.

Teaching learning strategies to students is how generally thought to enhance academic success

and enable lifelong learning.

MGLV 1

Therefore, it is necessary to determine what is likely to trigger each student

concentration, how to make it and how to respond his or her natural processing style to produce

long term memory. The factors or strategies will help to contribute in the academic performance

and to improve the performance of the students.

Statement of the Problem

Education is the most powerful weapon that people can use to change the world. It is the

foundation of ones career. It enables individual to prepare for a better future. However, quality

education is inevitable to achieve ones goal. People all over the world strive for quality

education. Thereby, a great need of new teaching and learning methods to meet global challenges

is inevitable.

Twenty first century learners often failed in their academic performance .Many of them

encounter serious challenges that prevent them from completing the course and failed in their

study. These failures can be attributed to several factors. These factors will be evaluated to

formulate new strategies and techniques for an effective learning of the students.

Therefore, this study aims to explore the factors that contribute to the academic defects of
M.A.Inc.3-25-17

the students and the strategies on how to cope with these failures. This will help both the students

and teachers to gain an effective learning and teaching.

Significance of the Study

The research study will be entitled Students Learning and Performance: Their

Strategies and Techniques will be a significant endeavor in finding and making new teaching

methods and learning strategies for the school and teachers. For the school, this will help them to

offer new teaching methods that will be evaluated to the teachers. For the teachers, this will serve

as a challenge to improve and change their teaching strategies in building the students learning.

This is also beneficial for the students to have effective learning. By understanding the factors

that contribute to the academic defects of the students and benefits of quality education. This will

provide recommendations on how to evaluate students performance and learning.

Scope and Delimitation

The study will cover the students from Grade 10 of Marinduque Academy Inc. School

Year 2017-2018.The researcher will limit the research to 50 respondents who will be selected

randomly.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter primarily aims to give the main sources, related studies and sources that

support this research study. This chapter also discusses the current problems and failures of the

students and how to cope it.

Student Learning and Performance

In the act of learning, people obtained content knowledge, acquire skills and develop

work habits and practice the application of the real world. Student learning and performance

represents a set of strategies for the acquisition and application of knowledge, skills and work

habits through the performance of tasks that are meaningful and engaging to the students. As

Coffield et al. (2004) said that learning has been and remains the central issue in school,

because of the complexity and importance of this process in the revolution of the society.

In the past twenty years, the study on learning techniques both theoretical and applied,

simultaneously sparked a strong interest, but also a whole controversy of opinion both academic

experts and among who learn independently. Much of this research and practice went forward
M.A.Inc.3-25-17

in the face of significant difficulties in the confusions and definition surrounding the

conceptualization disturbing cognitive styles and learning styles.

According to Kearns (2002), the American CEO Forum on Education and technology

conclude in a report in 2001 that the definition of student achievement required for them to thrive

in the future. Improving the school learning environment requires more than the implementation

of get tough disciplinary measures. It also means creating an atmosphere of respect for student

and sharing high quality learning. Strategies for student improvement must focus on the

particular academic needs of them.

Learning Strategies

Chamot (2004) defined learning strategies as thoughts or actions that students use to

complete learning tasks. We all know that good teachers use numerous teaching strategies to

help in student learning. However, students who analyze and reflect on their learning are more

effective learners. They are most able to acquire, retain and apply new information and skills.

Yet students often use learning strategies in a sporadic manner applying them inappropriately or

overusing the limited number they know.

Learners have their own systematic way of transforming information into knowledge.

Good and poor learners differ in how well they do this. In other words, learners employ different

strategies when they learn. Teaching learning strategies to the students is how generally thought
M.A.Inc.3-25-17

to enhance academic success and enable lifelong learning. (Gibbs,1992)

According to Pascual (2000), strategies to extend and strengthen childs learning and

performance includes the following: (1) Motivation and development of background, (2) Skill

MGLV 5
MARINDUQUE ACADEMY INC.
Rizal Street. Gitnang Bayan Mogpog, Marinduque

building activities, (3) Follow -up practice and (4) Enrichment activities. Through motivation,

students will be associated in the topics they are talking about. In skill building activities,

teachers may give instruction to the students regarding their own skill before proceeding one

activity. During lessons, skills that have been taught or practiced, needs to have follow up

exercise and renewing lessons.

The students will be reminded by the previous topics and they will be able to memorize

and learn the lessons well. Enrichment activities can also motivate through connecting and

creating ideas interesting and artistically. If the teacher establishes and enforces simple rules, the

student will have a good performance in class. (Naungayan, 2000) He also said that the teachers

must be consistent in the disciplinary pattern.

However, Villanueva (1998) said that even a comprehensive curriculum or strategies will

remain ineffective without the aid of dedicated teachers, varied and imaginative instructional

methods and creative learning materials.

In a recent monograph, Dunlosky (2013) and his colleagues reviewed research from

educational and cognitive Psychology surrounding popular learning strategies are actually

detrimental to learning and understanding .Some are somewhat helpful or are only helpful under
M.A.Inc.3-25-17

certain circumstances and some are helpful in any virtually learning system.

An aggregate of organized strategies and activities aimed of inducing learning .Overall

cluster of activities associated with a teacher and including explaining, questioning,

demonstrating and motivating.(Pedronan,2014) He also said that the process of learning is

primarily controlled by the learner not by the teacher. People learn what they want to learn.

They see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear. It is wise to engage learners in

an activity that is connected to their life experiences.

Learning Techniques

In a paper entitled Learning Styles: Concepts and Evidence (Pashler et al., 2008) said

that learning techniques is the way which learners begin to concentrate on process, absorb and

retain new and difficult information. The interaction of these elements occurs differently in

everyone. Therefore, it is necessary to determine what is likely to trigger each student

concentration, how to maintain it and how to respond to his or her natural processing style to

produce long term memory. To reveal these natural tendencies and styles, it is important to use

comprehensive model of learning techniques that identifies each individuals strengths and

references across the full spectrum.

Williams (2017) of Flinders University, stated that students good learning techniques

would ensure that they would know how to acquire new knowledge which improve learning

outcomes.
M.A.Inc.3-25-17

Anderson (1997) found that student learning increase when multiple techniques were use

relative learning that occurred when a single experiential technique also influenced the type of

information students learned.

MGLV 7

Rizal Street. Gitnang Bayan Mogpog, Marinduque

However, Dunlosky et al. (2013) stated that some commonly used techniques, such as

understanding, rereading materials and mnemonic devices were found to be of surprising utility.

These techniques were difficult to implement properly and often resulted in consistent gains

student performance. Nevertheless, some effective techniques are under-utilized. Many students

do not use them despite evidence suggesting that the techniques could benefit student

achievement with little added effort. This thing should be cope, in order for the students to gain

an effective learning.
