Assessment: witchcraf

S1 List three types of evidence used to identify witches

During this time people, would use to think that you are a witch by looking out for a mark that they
claim that the devil had lef whilst sleeping with the women. They can also check for withes by
poking a hole in the persons leg and seeing if blood had come out or if they had cried out in pain this
was tested as they thought that the devil had taken over their body so that they shall not feel no pain
they also tested for witches by seeing whether they had an animal or something to which they
believed that had taken over them

S2- How were witches punished?

If proven that a woman was a witch, they would be punished by execution

S3 How did religious tensions increase the numbers of witchcraf accusations?

Because Catholics werent appreciated back then so non-Catholics might have just told the court
members that so and so was a witch and that they should be executed this created religious tensions
as non-protestants would be put under pressure by the protestant as theyd be killed for no reason if
they had not been a certain religion so some people may not be able to bear the torture and might
just had themselves in and claim that they are a witch

C1 Explain how the following factors can be connected to explain the rise in witchcraf accusations:
Matthew Hopkins, the role of the Church
Matthew Hopkins is connected to the rise of witchcraf accusations as he was the man who had
written about how people would capture witchcrafs, all the info about how a witch would look to if
a woman had shown acts of obedience to a animal. The role of the church effected the rise of
witchcraf as the king banned catholic churches so if a catholic was accused of witch craf then they
would believe them as they didnt like Catholics and would have them executed. t

C2 Why were more women than men accused of witchcraf?

Women were accused more of witchcraf than men as women had more knowledge of making
potions for illnesses as they had spent more time not working whilst men did most of the work. Also
women were accused more of being witches as if they were a widow theyd accuse the women of
sleeping with the devil and because most men had more authority than women back then if they
were accused of being a witch they would be charged and executed
