Issues With the IGT Trimline Cabinet
and the AVP Platform
By Chuck Lentine

T
his article will describe many of the issues we have
experienced with the IGT Trimline cabinet and the
AVP platform, and they will be listed by the
symptom for ease of reference. But before we get the
party started I need to make all the slot techs who
maintain these games aware of one very important thing.
Keep them clean! These machines can suck in enormous
amounts of funk, dirt, and dust. Once it gets in there, it is
not fun to get out. Ive heard there are kits that put
filters over the speaker grills, but that doesnt stop lots of
dust entering from around the monitors and the BV and
printer bezels. If you have a preventative maintenance
program at your casino, make sure Trimlines get cleaned
frequently. We use a portable air compressor which gets
it all out. Go get your favorite beverage and lets dig in.

Loss of Player Tracking Communications Figure 1

Mounted under the brain box on the back wall is a

backplane board with communications boards plugged
into it. The top one is the RS-232 converter (player
tracking) and the bottom one is a fiber optic (jurisdiction
reporting and control) interface. Your boards may vary
due to your player tracking. See figure 1.

All the communication boards get their power from a

small universal 5VDC/12VDC power supply located in
the main power distribution box mounted in the lower
left corner of the cabinet (See figure 2). The most
common failure on the original power supply is C18
(1000uf / 10V). This capacitor will usually vent out the
bottom, and not show a bulge on the top. Once this
capacitor goes, the communication board power will
bounce on and off or just completely play dead. IGT does
Figure 2
Page 4 Slot Tech Magazine August 2011
August 2011 Slot Tech Magazine Page 5
have a new updated replacement available with about half of
the components of the original one. The part number is
40811200W. Also, an identical power distribution setup is in
the IGT S2000 slot mounted on the lower back wall.

While you are in the power distribution box, make sure the
main AC line is disconnected and take a look at the black power
line splitters. These have hot, neutral, and ground wires
pressed in them (see figure 3). There have been on quite a few
occasions one of these wires pops out of these blocks and does
intermittent things to the machine. Gently tug up on each wire
with needle nose pliers. If any wires do come out, reshape the
crimp connector on the end and place it back where it came
from.

Monitor flashing or Candy Stripe pattern

Figure 3

Both monitors are electronically the same, except the bottom

one has a touch screen.

The following is an inventory of what we replace to repair these

monitors. This cures the candy stripe pattern (LCD power on,
no logic) on power up and the screen and status LED on the
bottom flashing. (see figures 4 and 5) Replace these all due to
the high failure rate.

Note: the caps on the A/D converter are surface mount.
The smaller ones CANNOT handle much heat from a
soldering iron. They will explode when heated. We have had
luck gently cutting off the top part of the can by snipping
away the material in a circular motion always pressing
down on the base of the cap as not to pull up the traces. The
legs of the cap will be the only thing left, and are cleared
away by gently heating them up with a soldering iron. If
you have never done this before, you may want to practice
on a junk board removing SMT capacitors.

The BrainBox aka The CPU

The Video Card

Figure 6
Keep it clean before it fails! This is possibly the most
important step to keep this machine operating!

When the fan fails, it gets very hot. The heat sink grease
between the fan and video processor gets hard and stops
conducting heat and then the chip fails. Get to it before it
gets you. I have seen numerous times a bad video card
corrupt the hard drive during read and write routines.
(Figure 6)

If the fan has the black blades or shows any sign of not
turning easily, replace it. Be careful removing the spring
loaded pins that hold the fan to the board. If the pins dont
press out from the back easily, cut them off being careful
not to damage any traces. As shown in the above Figure,
you will probably find under it old dried up grease and dirt.
I use a small wooden dowel to scrape off the old grease,
Figure 7
then clean the top of the chip and surrounding area with a
glass cleaner ensuring the top of the chip is now very
shiny. Now install the new fan. It should come with heat
sink grease already applied. If not, be careful to lay down a
thin layer. This is very critical as too much will act as an
insulator. (Figure 7)

I have heard IGT has new video cards available, however it

might require modifying the heat sink and compatibility
issues with certain boot chips that may need to be updated.
We have not purchased any of these yet, but if we do it will
probably be in another follow-up article.

Machine Reboots or Board Monitor Tilt

Start by removing the two memory sticks in the middle of

the board. Then take off the large heat sink that covers the
processor chip, Be careful not to break off the plastic rails
that hold down the clips. (Figure 8)

Figure 9

Figure 10
Remove the processor chip and clean out any
dust under it. This is the neighborhood the
thermostat for the motherboard is in that
causes Board monitor tilts CPU temp out of
range. Be careful not to bend any pins
inserting it back into the socket.(Figure 9)

Notice the top of the processor chip. It is

supposed to be coated with heat sink grease.
The one in the Figure above has been dried
up and is causing the processor to reboot
constantly. Clean off the old grease and apply
a fresh coating. Before you place the heat
sink back into the brain box, notice if there is
a dimple in the foam on the top. If there is,
remove this section as the mounts from the
hard drive / DVD tray are placing pressure
on the heat sink not causing it to lay flat
against the processor. This is before (Figure
10) and after (Figure 11)

While you have the brain box out, inspect

the main power connector on the rear of the
unit. This can turn brittle from the heat and
can crack and become discolored. (Figure 12)

The harness on the other side of this connector
is short and can be removed easily from the
brain box housing and re-pinned. This
connector housing is a Molex 15-06-0180.
(Figure 13)

Machine Fails to Boot-Power OK to Fans

and Monitors

There is a small micro-switch that is mounted

in the brain box that controls soft power to
the motherboard. This bugger can be easily
knocked out of position by the release handle
and the CPU will play dead on you. This is also
the same micro-switch found under the IGT
slant top bill validator doors. (Figure 14)

System Launcher Not Found

If you are seeing this without doing the above

steps to the video card, and processor cleaning,
stop and do them now. Every time I see this
error I can usually trace it back 99% of the time
to the video card or processor heat sink grease!
If you dont do these procedures, the problem
will come back very shortly, and any work you
do below will be lost. Figure 14

I had the next two days off work but I was

curious and had to ask when I returned. When
I arrived the game was turned on and running.
What was replaced to get it running? I was told
that the reel control board and the CPU were
replaced. But I would be willing to bet the CPU

After taking apart the printer (which is quite
easy, only a few Phillips screws) the paper-in

tip to wipe off the optic so it was nice and
clean. I gave the printer assembly another shot
with the air compressor while it was dis-as-

one reason or another, I didnt have a spare

also known as the GEN 1. What I would like to
pass along is how easy and simple it was to

nostic menu again and print a test ticket to
verify that the printer does work. The game
should print a test ticket. If not, the 950 may
have the wrong software installed. The correct
one is around version N00527. N00526 and
N00528 should work also. As a note, we are
running the Oasis system, with a majority of
Sentinel IIs, and some Sentinel IIIs. It is also a
good idea to print an actual cash out ticket
from the game. I usually print two or three just
to make sure the printer is working properly.

Aristocrat Locking up for a Hand Pay

This was a new ordeal for me. It was an older

Aristocrat game with the SPC COM board. The

weird part was, to me, darned near everything

may be tricky to reconnect.).

printer. Now power up the

Subscriptions & Back Issues
Why back issues of Slot Tech Magazine are
important to own . . .

S lot Tech Magazine is strictly technical. As such, the magazine's contents are not time
critical. The repair information and technical data contained in past issues is just as valid
today as it was the day it was published.

Additionally, current and future articles more-or-less assume that readers are already familiar
with what has been covered in past issues. This editorial policy assures that Slot Tech
Magazine's contributing writers are not limited to "writing down" to the level of a novice
technician but are free to continue to produce the most comprehensive technical articles in
the gaming industry.
