V. SYNOPSIS:

International Entrepreneurship has been defined in various ways, for example,

Oviatt and McDougall, (2005, p.8) define it as as the discovery, enactment, evaluation, and

exploitation of opportunities- across national borders- to create future goods and services,

whilst Dimitratos and Plakoyiannaki, (2003, p. 189) define it as an organization-wide process

which is embedded in the organizational culture of the firm and which seeks through the

exploitation of opportunities in the international marketplace to generate value. The growing

importance international entrepreneurship has been recently highlighted in both international

business and marketing. This is evidenced by special issues in two leading journals; International

Business Review (Vol. 14, 2005) and International Marketing Review (Vol. 23, No. 5, 2006).

In this journal article, it examines Thailands entrepreneurial culture of

international small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It is as well highlights the role of

organizational culture under a new construct International Entrepreneurial Culture (IEC), with a

particular emphasis on how cultural values embedded in organizational cultures might influence

SMEs' performance through a strategic management process. Using data from SMEs engaged in

international transactions based in Thailand, results suggest that IEC consists of three dimensions

which are somewhat different from what was conceptually explained in the literature. The

combination of these dimensions significantly affects strategy formulation and strategy

implementation in a consequential manner, although it is not directly influential in international

performance. The findings offer theoretical contribution in the international entrepreneurship

literature as well as managerial implications for policy makers dealing with SMEs in small open

economies found in emerging markets. (Chaiwat Baimai)

VI. CRITIQUE OF THE ARTICLE

To begin with, the title is appropriate and clear. However, we do not use

acronyms in title without spelling them out. Because the title uses the word SMEs which readers

who are not familiar with this may simply skip this article even if this is relevant to their study.

The abstract provided detailed information. The usual sections defined in a structured abstract

are the Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. In the abstract of this journal article, no

methods were indicated even if methods were discussed in the article. There is no introduction

indicated in this article, I suppose that the abstract serves as the introduction. However, a

background was introduced wherein it has detailed, precise, and sufficient information based on

the analysis of the study. The background also defines the scope and limitation of the study of

the journal article.

The purpose of the article is ambiguous. There were methods used as the article

goes on, but if you tried to look closely on the abstract, you will be confused as to what is the

purpose of the study. It was somehow elaborated in the background but you have to read it all

over again just to justify that the study has its purpose. As I go along, the article was reinforced

with fact and interpretation from different literature and study. The discussions were relevant

because it stated different interpretation that helped me determine what is more speculative.

Hypothesis were presented, which I believe helped me understand directly the relevant issues.

Results were relative to the expectations and to the literature. Also, results clearly state why they

were acceptable and how they were consistent with previous studies. The conclusion was briefly

discussed because the results were already in the discussion.
